I n 1809, h o w ev er, a b is o n n a m e d M is k a (M ic h k a ) s till liv e d in V ie n n a . I t c a m e fro m T r a n s y lv a ­ n ia , w h e re i t w a s c a p tu r e d a s a c a lf in 1788. I t w a s a fa v o r ite o f th e V ie n n e se p u b lic i n fig h ts w ith w o lv e s, dogs, b u lls , etc. D u r in g th e c irc u s fire in 1796, it b ro k e th e c h a in s , fe lle d th e fen ce a n d s a v e d its e lf, a s th e o n ly a n im a l t h a t s u rv iv e d t h i s te r r ib le c o n fla g ra tio n . A fte r th e a c c id e n t, th e b is o n liv e d fo r a n o th e r 13 y e a r s in S c h o n b ru n n . M o st p ro b a b ly M is k a w a s a lso s e e n b y J e a n - B a p tis te B o ry d e S a in t- V in c e n t (1 7 7 8 -1 8 4 6 ), o n e o f th e g r e a t e s t F r e n c h n a t u r a l i s t s o f th e 1 9 th c e n tu ry , a n d a t th e s a m e tim e a h ig h - r a n k in g o fficer i n N a p o le o n ’s arm y . I n a l e t t e r to h is f r ie n d , p h y s ic ia n a n d n a t u r a l i s t L e o n D u fo u r, s e n t o n 15 F e b r u a r y 1807 fro m W a rsa w , h e w ro te : “I h a v e n o t s e e n th e v e g e ta tio n o f th e s e p la in s d u e to th e s n o w cover. O n ly th e p in e fo r e s ts (P in u s r u b r a ) a re r is in g in th e s e e m p ty sp aces. T h e s e a r c h fo r th e b is o n fro m V ie n n a le d to a v e ry s u r p r is in g r e s u l t - a lth o u g h t h e s p e c im e n w a s d e s c rib e d b y C u v ie r, th e r e w a s n o tr a c e o f M is k a b o th in th e o ste o lo g ic a l co lle c tio n a n d in la b o r a to r y re c o rd s.
