ANALISI SPERIMENTALE DELLA DISTRIBUZIONE DELLE TENSIONI NEL MADIERE DI UN DOP-PIO FONDO DI UNA BULK-CARRIER

- INTRODUZIONE

cer-to numero di forze concentrate al carico distribuicer-to ed alle reazioni mutue effettivamenteconcen-trate nei nodi (B.T. R.I.NA. n° 3);

si è supposta trascurabile la torsione del madiere;

EXPERIMENTAL ANALYSIS OF THE STRESS DISTRIBUTION IN THE FLOOR OF A BULK

CAR-RIER DOUBLE BOTTOM

- INTRODUCTION

1. The present report shows the results of a series of tests effected on the specimen of a double bot-tom floor of a bulk carrier.

Such tests had for their object to control the behaviour of stresses in the ends of the floors, in the de Saint Venant area. The test on a similar specimen provided with manholes in the tested area is also provided for a successive period of time.

2. The research was carried experimentally on the specimen of a portion of double bottom, consisting of a floor, with associated two strips of plating corresponding to the double bottom inner plating and to the bottom, and four portions of girders.

At the ends the floor was connected to two structures reproducing the side tanks and provided with a suitable device for graduating the bending moment in the various sections.

3. In the tests shown in this report the stresses were measured and plotted the isostatic lines in the measure area comprised between the floor ends and the first girder, with loads concentrated in the intersections of the floor with the girders.

4. The following hypothesis were advanced for defining the execution modalities of said tests. it was believed possible to concentrate in said intersections the whole load acting on the floor by substituting a certain number of concentrated forces for the distributed load and the mutual reactions actually concentrated in said intersections (B.T RINA. No. 3),

the floor twist was presumed as neglectable;

c) it was imagined to reproduce the fixed Joint effect produced by the frame and the torsional stif-/ness o/the side tanks, by a peculiar apparatus which will be described hereafter.

2 - DESCRIPTION OF THE SPECIMEN

5. The design of the tested specimen was taken from the cross section of a bulk carrier having the following characteristics:

162,00 m

B 2O9Om

D 13,2Om

with deck and bottom of longitudinal structure.

The double bottom section of such a ship is shown in fig. 1.

The constructive characteristics of said specimen, in Aq 42 steel, are shown in fig. 2.

Therefore, the specimen reproduces in scale 1:4 the essential characteristics of the bottom of

a bulk carrier.

lt was not believed necessary to arrange also the portions of longitudinals o/the bottom and DB. inner plating as they u'ere thought not to be in position to influence the stress configuration which is intended to be measured.

I bracci rappresentati in fig.

(8)

On the contrary a reinforcement turned out to l necessary for the edges of the web plates in order to avoid instability phenomena in the platings Such reinforcements were realized as shown in fig. 3 in order to avoid only the bukling in the plating edges without however co-operating to the stiffness of the beam cross section.

The arms shown in fig. 2, integral with the bilge structure, allow to vary the fixed joint effect of the side tanks. As a matter of fact, by acting with a load on a cross beam connecting the arms on the same side, it is possible to graduate at pleasure the bending moment on the floor.

3 - EXECUTION OF THE TESTS

For convenience sake the specimen has been placed upside down and connected to the support f loor reinforced by means of four hinge anchorages arranged at the ends of the side tanks as shown

in fig. 2.

The loads have been applied from the bottom upwards by means of five hydraulic jacks arranged in the intersections o/the floor with the central girder and the lateral girders, plates with the object of distributing the applied load being interposed.

Two further jacks were acting under the said arms, in order to make the bending moment in the various sections of the specimen vary.

The load amount was limited in consideration of the stability and strength of the plates. The tests of the specimen concerned were accomplished in two different conditons of load.

In the first one the arms projecting outside the structure were not loaded. In such a way the struc-ture itself behaved as a bent beam resting on the end correspondingly to the hinges.

Fig. 4 shows the distribution of the loads charged and the diagrams of the shear and the bending

moment in such condition.

From a physical point of view, that leads to ascertain that in the ship the torsional stiffness of the lateral tanks is negligible, that is the condition occuring when the holds are very long or when

the lateral tanks are not provided.

In the second load condition a known force was applied on the lateral arms.

The diagram of the shear and the bending moment along the whole beam is shown in fig. 5. The position and amount of the load acting on the overhanging arms were selected in such a way that the bending moment in the end section of the floor be 0.5 times the moment of perfect fixed joint for that section.

After defining as fixed joint degree in a section the ratio between the actually applied bending moment and the perfect fixed joint moment, it may be said that the fixed joint degree of the above-cited section was 0,5.

Further a number of tests were effected with variable load conditions and exactly with variable fixed joint degree in order to ascertain how the stress configuration was changing.

JESTING APPARATUS

The deformation configuration in the various points was controlled by means of electric strain

gauges.

(9)

(10)

11. Simple strain gauges were applied in facing couples on the two ¡aces of the plates of the double

bottom inner plating and bottom. That for the purpose of measuring in each point the single tractions or compression not influenced by the local bending.

in such a way it was possible to ascertain that the course of the stresses on the two web plates was corresponding, with a good approximation, to the one concerning a beam subjected to a strain ght

bending.

Similarly, eight strain gauges arranged on th two faces of the web in the central area permitted to control the shape of the triangular diagram of in such area.

Fig. 6 shows the complete scheme of the strain gauges placed.

12. In the zone of the floor close to the slanting wall of the side tanks, 50 strain gauge

ro-settes were arranged, they too facing each other on the two faces of the floor, in the positions shown in fig. 7.

- RESULTS OF THE FIRST SERIES OF TESTS

A) Distribution of the stresses along the floor

13. in figs. 8 and 9 the values of the normal longitudinal stresses (OX) measured on the web plates are compared to the theoric values which were calculated upon presuming the beam simply bent. 14. Fig. 8 concerns the first load condition and is equivalent to a beam simply supported by the hin-ges. It was noted a good conformity of the obtained results to the theoric values, especially for the upper plate which appears stretched, while for the lower plate, which appears compressed, buckling phenomena of the plating may have given rise to the differences between the experimental and teori-cal values.

15. Fig. 9 relates to the second load condition, that is with a partially fixed beam. The conformity of the obtained results with the theoric values is rather good and the differences are within the ap-proximation range of the measures.

16. Figs. 10 and 11 show the stress distribution in section A - A of the beam in the two above shown cases. The considerations concerning the preceding paragraph are valid here too in principle. It must be added that the obtained values are compared only to the theoric ones taken from the basic theory

of bent beams.

B) Stress distribution in the floor in the tested area near the slanting wall of side tanks

17. The deformations produced in the floor web were ascertained by means of the 25 pairs of three-grid rectangular rosettes in the already shown positions. The measurements were repeated several

times in similar conditions so as to avoid accidental faults.

18. The values of deformations taken as indicative of the strain configuration in the various points are shown in tables 1 and 2, concerning the first and second load condition respectively; said ta-bles show:

- in column 1: the num ber of the pair of rosettes;

- in columns 2, 3, 4; the strain values in the three directions;

applica-to.

Further, coefficient KT was calculated, correspondingly to the portions of the 25 rosettes in the

following way:

(Tmax) sper. ('tmax) theor.

The values of the latter coefficient do not differ very much from the unitary value, except for a

few points. The values of Kpmax and K pmin are shown in columns 7 and 8 of tables 3 and 4. The measured values and the calculated ones of cJ,, G, and were shown in diagram taking

into consideration the various vertical rows for the drawing of and as well as the various horizontal rows of strain gauge rosettes for the drawing of Q,.

Particularly, the following pairs of figures show, for said first and second load conditions

respec-tive ly:

- figs. 22 and 23 the comparison between the theoric G and the measured one;

- figs. 24 and 25 only the values of Q, , the corresponding theoric value being nul everywhere;

- figs. 26 cd 27 the comparison between the theoric T,,, and the measured one.

)Considerations on the first series of tests

The sets of isostatics shown in figs. 12 and 13 were obtained starting from the preliminary plot-ting of the corresponding sets of level curves (isoclines) of angle (P the experimental values of which are shown in tables 1 and 2.

As it is well known, by using the bent beam theory the two sets of isostatics originate normally from the two longitudinal lower and upper edges of the beam and, with an asymptotic course, tend to dispose according to a direction parallel to the opposed edge. The local effect of the load transmit-ted by the girder to the floor, just on the right of the testransmit-ted area, and the variation in section of the f loor just on the left of said area, cause disturbances in said theoric course, which may be checked by means of the listed figures.

In fig. 12, 14 and 16 it may be seen an increase in absolute value of the lowest main stress both near the variation in section of the floor, and near the area where the load is applied on the girder. In the upper portion of the tested area, the isostatics and the principal stresses have course and va-lues very similar to the theoric ones, in consideration of the fact that the effect of variation in sec-tion and of the applied load has less influence.

As it maybe seen in figs. 18 and 20, the highest values of Kpmax and Kpmin occur corre-spondingly to rosettes 23, 24 and 25 and to the fourth and above all the fifth row of rosettes

respec-tively. As the lower border of the area concerned is, in the first load condition, mainly compressed, the most significant coefficient is K min which reaches values up to 1.8 and, outside of the che-cked area, under said rosettes and on the left of rosettes 16 and 21, probably still higher values.

(15)

fi-gura 28).

(16)

diffe-As for second load condition, in fig. 19 are shown relatively high values of coefficient Kpmax along the diagonal of the checked area which extend from the position of rosetta 5 to that 01

roset-ta 21. As in the latter area the floor is stretched, to the highest value of K max = 2,7 corresponds

t/e highest value of the measured main stress pmax too. As it could be easily thought, coefficient min has relatively high values in the surrounding of rosetta 25 (see fig. 21). Such a value decrea-ses sharply elsewhere and close to rosetta 21 it changes sign, reaching the value of about -2,0. Neither for the second load condition the values of K max and K min rise any care in the upper

portion of the checked area.

After comparing to each other the results of the two load conditions, it may be said that in both cases the most stressed area is the one close to the base of the slanting wall of the side tanks, whe-re the measuwhe-red principal stwhe-resses whe-reach values higher from 1,8 to 2,7 times than the theoric stwhe-resses calculated in the first and second load conditions respectively.

Stress Tmax is always distributed rather uniformely in the area concerned and does not differ from the calculated theoric one, as it may be checked on tables 1, 2, 3 and 4.

The uniform distribution of the shear stress clearly results also in figs. 26 and 27 too, where the diagrams of the measured values of Txy do not differ remarkably in the two load conditions. 31 Also the distribution o/the measured values of does not vary very much in said two load

conditions, as it may be seen in figs. 24 and 25.

Generally, the values of ai,, are practically negligible except for some points where the effect of the concentrated lóad and the variation in section of the specimen is st ronger.

32 On the contrary, the distribution of Gx varies remarkably in said two load conditions, as it may be seen in figs. 22 and 23.

In the first load condition (fig. 22) the behaviour of G is very similar to the theoric one. There

is only an expectable increase near the base of the slanting wall of the side tanks, and in the point where the concentrated load is applied.

In the second load condztion (fig. 23), the distribution of the values of x differs from that ob-tainable by the basic theory of bent beams, as a matter of fact. 0 assumes considerable values also correspondingly to the position of the neutral axis obtained by said theory.

D) Result of the test with variable fqxed joint degree

Measures with load conditions varying around the one shown in fig. 5 were taken in order to

com-plete the series of the above tests.

In other words further tests were effected where the fixed Joint degree was made to vary from

0,25 to 0,75, by suitably acting on the load X applied on the overhanging arms of the specimen (see fig. 28).

¡n the considered area, the results of the measures taken with the above fixed joint degree differ

ed from each other only for small amounts comprised within the approximation of the measurefaults. That means that in such an area the distribution of the stresse s does not vary considerablyfor

small variations in the fixed joint degree around the value of 0,5. That is justified by that the pre-vailing stress is the shear stress which not vary when the fixed joint degree varies.

Finally, it may be stated that the tests effected in the second load condition (fig 29) are valid also for floo the fixed joint degree of whic is variable within an interval which may be defined as

comprised between 0,25 and 0,75.

(17)

CONCLUSION I

CONCLUSIONS

The described tests had for their object to give a first specification of the stresses distribution in the floor of bulk carriers near the slanting wall of the side tanks.

The tests effected on the floor specimen showed that the floor in the considered area behaves as a common beam provided with a relatively sharp variation in section correspondingly to which the principal stresses are subject to a remarkable increase.

During said tests efforts were made to value said increase. On a later time it will be checked the behaviour of a similar specimen in presence of manholes variably distributed.

Obviously, in valuing the test results, it is to be duly noted that same may vary together with the size of the specimen and the modification of the ratios between the various sizes of the end por-tion of the floor.

in the conditions the tests were effected in the value of the principal stresses measured close to the variation in section of the floor, resulted to be about double with respect to the values which may be calculated by the basic theory of bent beams.

As a matter of fact, in all the load conditions the floor was tested in,the increase coefficients of the principal stresses under the slanting wall of the side tanks, resulted to be comprised between

1,7 and 2,6.

In case the results of such tests are to be applied to a direct calculation, when the flooT shape and the load conditions are comparable to those of the checked specimen, it will be possible to use in first approximation the values of the increase coefficients found not only under the slanting wall of the side tanks, but also in the adjacent area.
