The general linear model !is the conneeting thread that weaves tllTough many a'Spects of map prepara-tion, map analysis, and map lnterpretation. In. its two-dimensional form othe general linear model is the basis for the :pdlynomial and Fourier map - 8II1aly-sis models, bdth of wthlch are widely used in a va-riety of geological fields.
This article briefly describes the approach offe-red by trend analysis 'in fi'tting a mathematical sur-fa'Ceto the data by the method of least squares. This surface iJS ten considered to be an estimate of the regional -component of vm-Umce (of trend). The de-viations of the observed ·data from the trend, called
res:itluals, refilect I'DCall variatkm, local component plus the noise, and are in general random.
