Analysis of energy management strategies for autonomous mobile robot powered by solar cells
The autonomy of mobile robots is defined as the operation time of the machine, fully using its capabilities and functional movement. This autonomy is generally low and fluctuates within a few hours what is caused by limited capacity of batteries which the robot must carry. In addition, after the limited time, the batteries must be recharged, which requires some time and causes the robot immobilization. A promising way to increase autonomy level of mobile robots is to use appropriately selected photovoltaic modules (PV) as an additional source of energy. PV cells can provide an extra energy for both charging and ongoing power supply for robot subsystems such us: measurement, control and communication systems. The scientific purpose of the thesis was to develop effective methods of power management to minimize its current consumption. It was based on design and construction of the set of electronic modules for mobile robot that would provide power management during the robot movement. In this work two mobile robots were used: senior tracked and a new 4-wheel robot, independently developed by the author. The obtained results confirmed the increase autonomy of mobile robot by using PV generator and a proper design of hybrid power system that uses two types of energy storage (Li-ion battery and supercapacitor).
