The p a p y r u s is the most interesting t e x t f r o m the archives of t h e cohors XX Palmyrenorum. T h e column t h a t is preserved contains a list of men, whose names in some instances are followed b y a description of a horse, a date, a n d usually, a sum in denari. These entries are based on letters, which h a d assigned t h e horses t o the équités, some earlier examples of which h a v e also survived. Four types of officials are cited: a consularis (the governor of Syria Coele), a procurator, duces and praefecti; of these the i d e n t i t y of only t h e praefects presents a n y real problem. T h e a u t h o r assumes t h a t t h e r e praefects are t h e praefecti praetorio. If t h i s a s s u m p t i o n is correct, the p a p y r u s is an evidence for their b r o a d jurisdiction in t h e t h i r d c e n t u r y and t h e concern of t h e central g o v e r n m e n t w i t h details of provincial a d m i n i s t r a t i o n .
