Since 1996 a magazine „Czasy Nowożytne" has been published every six months. It is a periodical devoted to the Polish and world history from 15th to 20th
century. The originators presented their intention in the preface to the first edi-tion.
„The formula of the magazine does not impose any territorial barriers, only temporal. We wish to publish materials connected with Polish history as well as world history provided that they fit the chronological range of the so-called mo-dern times. The term, in accordance with earlier traditions, has a broad understan-ding and, as French and German historians do, we mark the boundaries of the so called modern times starting from 15th century up to the present day."
After four years we judged it worthwhile to make the production of the magazine be known historians, who, because of language limitations, cannot read the Polish version of the periodical. We have decided, therefore, to prepare a volume once a year, which would be the English presentation of selected texts that had been published in the periodical.
Each volume will be designed in such a way as to present particular subject matter in a coherent manner. And so we would like to present a volume devoted solely to the facets of Stalinism in Poland. The second volume whose preparation is under way will be devoted to the issues of Polish religious tolerance and mutual relations between denominations in Poland in the period between 16,h and 18th
centuries. The third will be devoted to selected problems of the Polish history in 19th and 20lh centuries.
