The “Education and Pedagogy” magazine (1929–1939) in the press system of school authorities in the Second Polish Republic
Summary
The subject of the article is the magazine “Education and Pedagogy” [“Oświata i Wychowanie”], published between 1929 and 1939 by the Ministry of Religion and Public Education [Ministerstwo Wyznań Religijnych i Oświecenia Publicznego]. The magazine can be included as part of the print media system of Interwar Poland’s school authorities due to its publisher (MWRiOP), authors, editorial organization, function, tasks and topics covered (a wide range of issues associated with pedagogy and education, as suggested by the title). The main part of this system were the official journals of the Ministry of Religion and Public Education and its Department of Education, whereas the informative-and-propagandist didactical magazine, “Education and Pedagogy”, was an addition. In the fi rst year, the periodical was published every two months, except for July and August (summer break), and in 1930 it was turned into a monthly paper. Monthly frequency was kept until 1939 and the paper was incorporated into the Ministry’s (MWRiOP’s) organization and wide editorial formula. This facilitated information diffusion, intensified and actuated propaganda measures, and shaped public opinion through the opportunity to raise various issues significant for culture and education. These issues included political, economical, educational and cultural changes in Poland, and the development of pedagogy and similar areas. The periodical was aimed at educated people professionally linked to the educational system: school authorities’ representatives of all regions and employees of various educational academic and extracurricular institutions, both public and non-public. During the final years of publication, it was also directed to students’ parents and other people interested in the issues mentioned. The article describes the characteristics of the periodical “Education and Pedagogy” and is an attempt to define its role in the press system of Interwar Poland’s school authorities.
