In this article t h e a u t h o r — on the basis of a rich material under-takes to f i n d out t h e meaning of the word άστός . According to t h e author άστός w i t h o u t a n y other addition means t h e a p p a r t e n a n c e (of a m a n or woman) t o t h e Greek c o m m u n i t y of Alexandria while Άλεξανδρεύς or a m a n indicated b y giving his deme is a full-right citizen.
