Mathematical modeling of operation of cross-flow tube and fin heat exchangers
Abstract
The theme of the doctoral dissertation is modeling of operation of cross-flow heat exchangers, made of finned tubes in the steady state and transient. The heat exchanger can be made of tubes with the individual or continuous fins called lamellae. In contrast to previous studies the transient temperature distribution in fins was considered. The fins may have a complex shape. A general method for the determination of the temperature and efficiency of the fins in transient state was developed. New formula for the weighted heat transfer coefficient that takes into account the heat exchange through fins and tube surfaces between the fins, as well as the heat accumulation inside the fins, was proposed. The heat exchanger can have any number of passes and rows. Temperature dependent physical properties of both fluids can easily be taken into account. This is especially important for heat exchangers in which the superheated steam flows inside the tubes while the flue gas flows perpendicular to the tubes axis. This occurs in finned steam superheaters in heat recovery steam boilers installed behind the gas turbines.
A mathematical model of the two-pass car radiator with two tube rows was developed. Correlations for heat transfer coefficients were determined on the basis of experimental tests for the analyzed exchanger. Numerical and experimental transient tests were carried out for time dependent volumetric flow rates of water and air at the inlet of the heat exchanger. The calculation results were compared with measurements finding their good agreement.
