W rozprawie doktorskiej przedstawiono wyniki kompleksowych badań laminowanych osadów jeziora Gościąż położonego w centralnej Polsce. Obejmują one badania składu izotopowego węgla i tlenu we frakcji węglanowej oraz w kalcycie, tlenu w celulozie, azotu i węgla we frakcji organicznej oraz tlenu w okrzemkach. Analizy izotopowe zostały uzupełnione o pomiary zawartości frakcji węglanowej i organicznej oraz stosunku C/N we frakcji organicznej i zawartości wybranych metali w osadach.
W szczególności, wykorzystano termometr węglanowy i krzemianowy do wyznaczenia zmian temperatury wody w jeziorze.
The doctoral thesis presents the results of comprehensive isotope investigations of laminated sediments of Lake Gościąż situated in central Poland. The isotope analyses performed on the sediments of the lake comprised carbon and oxygen isotope composition of carbonate fraction and calcite; oxygen isotope composition of aquatic cellulose; nitrogen and carbon isotope composition of the bulk organic fraction; oxygen isotope composition of diatom silica. Isotope analyses have been complemented analysis of carbonate and organic fraction content in the sediment, C/N ratios in the organic fraction as well as concentration of selected metals in the sediments.
The sediment samples, collected with high resolution, gave a unique insight into the dynamics of the Gościąż lake as well as evolution of hydro-climatic conditions in its surroundings, as a result of rapid hydro-climatic changes at the late Glacial/Holocene boundary.
For the first time, the functioning of calcite and silica geothermometers in the continental lake environment has been compared. Parallel use of these two isotope geothermometers, combined with oxygen-18 analyses of aquatic cellulose gave a unique opportunity for quantitative assessment of temperature and oxygen isotope composition of lake water in the past.
Analysis of carbon and nitrogen content in the organic fraction as well as concentration of selected metals in the sediments yield valuable information about cycle of these two elements in lacustrine environment and about changes of redox conditions.
On the basis of isotope data obtained in the framework of this study, two quantitative models describing evolution of hydrological balance of the lake as well as changes in carbon cycle, for the entire life time of the lake has been formulated.
