Badania przeprowadzono w trzech układach pomiarowych, odpowiadających różnym warunkom pracy elektrod ogniw: (i) katody w ogniwie paliwowym stałotlenkowym (SOFC), (ii) katody i anody ogniwa paliwowego jednokomorowego (SCFC) oraz (iii) katody w ogniwie paliwowym polimerowym (PEMFC).
Application of microelectrodes to the investigation of selected electrode processes in fuel cells.
Electrodes of fuel cells are generally made of porous materials to increase their areas and in consequence the power of the cell as well as facilitate an approach of gaseous reactants to the electrolyte. However, the electrodes employed in this work were made of solid materials. Use of solid electrodes allowed to achieve the aim of this work much easier, i.e. to determine the mechanism and kinetic parameters of the selected electrode reactions in fuel cells.
The investigations were performed with the three experimental systems corresponding to the different conditions of operations of fuel cell electrodes: (i) cathode in a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC), (ii) cathode and anode in a One Chamber Fuel Cell (OCFC) and (iii) cathode in a Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC). In two former cases, the experiments were done at high temperatures, the quasi-point electrodes made of Pt and Au were used and the electrolyte was made of Yttrium Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ)/ In the latter case, the measurements were performed at the ambient temperature, the Pt microelectrodes of six various diameter were applied and the electrolyte was made of Nafion: an proton-conducting polymer.
The investigations have showed the usefulness of using the microelectrodes to study the processes in fuel cells -they allow to elucidate these processes and determine their parameters.
