The subject of this doctoral thesis was to examine the usefulness of modern, non-invasive measurement techniques, such as terrestrial laser scanning and ground- based radar interferometry to control the geometry of retaining structures. The aim of the thesis was achieved by verifying the accuracy of these techniques based on comparison measurements of retaining structures, obtained using modern instruments, with results acquired using precise surveying.
The first part of the work is the study of literature devoted to geological, geotechnical and construction issues as well as legislation and standardization. Analysis of laws, standards in force, and history of damages or failures of retaining walls indicated the need to control them with direct measurements. The next stage of the study was to analyze contemporary methods of measurement for determining the movements of retaining walls and select the appropriate techniques applied in the context of research.
Retaining walls were covered with classic measurements, which constituted a reference to test the techniques of laser scanning and radar interferometry. In the final part of the work the results of displacements of retaining walls obtained by different methods were summarized. Moreover, the conclusions concerning the possibility of control the retaining structures using non- contact measurement methods were drawn.
