S U M M A R Y
The Rule and S ta tu te s of the Teutonic K nights and other docum ents of the Teutonic O rder were analyzed to tra c k th e history of th e G rand M aster’s office. The decisions and accomplishments of successive G rand M asters were examined to expound th e ir role and position in the O rder in the analyzed period and th e ir influence on the power wielded by the O rder in th e Middle E ast, P ru ssia an d E uropean bailiwicks. The au th o r exam ines changes in the role of the G rand M aster’s function, other suprem e offices in the O rder and the shaping of relations w ithin the Teutonic O rder throughout th e centuries. The transform ations observed in th e Rule and S ta tu te s of th e Teutonic K nights and in th e O rder’s activities u n til the 20th century throw light on the specific n a tu re of the G rand M aster’s office, the O rder’s condition, the im pact of ex tern al influences, in te rn a l tren d s (reforms), changes in th e G rand M aster’s powers and the role of the G rand M aster’s office in the Order.
The second p a rt of th e article discusses the G rand M aster’s residences in Acre, M ontfort, Venice, M albork, Konigsberg, M ergentheim and, lastly, Vienna. The G rand M aster’s role in each of those residences is analyzed in th e light of form al re q u ire m en ts and historical events. The residence of the G rand M aster of the Teutonic O rder w as transform ed into the official seat of the head of the state in P russia, w hereas in the reform ed Teutonic Order, the palaces in M ergentheim and V ienna retain ed th e ir function of the G rand M aster’s residence. C hanges in th e G rand M aster’s role and position influenced the O rder’s policies and the Teutonic K nights’ s ta tu s and rep u tatio n in the in te rn atio n al arena, in p artic u la r in P russia.
