/39Ar. Wyniki tych analiz połączono z obserwacjami strukturalnymi i badaniami chemii
minerałów, aby rozstrzygnąć czasową ewolucję deformacji i metamorfizmu.
Exhumation dynamics of high pressure rocks during Caledonian orogenesis:
A geochronological perspective
The evolution of the Caledonian orogeny included Cambrian to early Silurian closure of the Iapetus ocean. The aim of the thesis is to resolve the timing of subduction and exhumation of the (ultra-)high pressure rocks in Norrbotten of the Scandinavian Caledonides and in the Svalbardian Caledonides, representing vestiges of subduction during ocean closure. To achieve this, metasedimentary rocks that host high pressure lithologies were targeted for application of the following modern geochronological techniques: 1) zircon U-Pb depthprofiling; 2) situ monazite Th-U-total Pb; and 3) in-situ white mica 40Ar/39Ar geochronology. The results of these analyses were combined
with structural observations and mineral chemistry studies to resolve the temporal evolution of deformation and metamorphism. The results show that the rocks in Norrbotten were subducting in late Cambrian time. These rocks then exhumed in the Early to Middle Ordovician period. Exhumation of high pressure rocks on Svalbard were coeval with the Norrbotten. Altogether these results indicate that subduction was protracted for Norrbotten but peak pressure metamorphism was followed by rapid Early Ordovician exhumation of both Norrbotten and Svalbard localities.
