B o t h w e r e b o r n in N e w a r k , N e w Je r s e y , in 1933 . Th e n o v e l s t h a t b o t h w r o t e a b o u t t h ei r J e w i s h b a c k g r o u n d s b r o u g h t t h e m f a m e as w e l l as th e a n -gr y r e s p o n s e s of t h os e w h o s e e t h e m as l a m p o o n e r s of t h e i r o w n f a m i l y a n d e t h n i c t r a d i t i o n s .
