It co n tain s selected poetical w orks which were the reactio n to political events o f th a t tim e, starting from the first p a rtitio n o f P o lan d to the loss o f n atio n al independence a n d the beginning o f the fight fo r regaining freedom , w hich was to be co n tin u ed ab ro ad , in the Polish Legions o f N a p o le o n ’s arm y. T he Song o f these Legions becam e later the n atio n al anthem . T he edition covers th irty nine loose-leaf publications an d one m anu scrip t, containing b o th the patrio tic poem s by the o u tstan d in g poets o f the period, eg. Ignacy K rasicki, A dam N aruszew icz a n d F ranciszek K arp iń ski, a n d an o n y m ous w orks, which were n u m ero u s an d very p o p u la r a t the tim e. T he basis o f the facsimile re p ro d u ctio n are rare, ex tan t copies o f the first printings, which are to be fo u n d in P olish libraries. T he printings, reproduced in th eir original fo rm at, are also d ocu m ents o f the a rt o f prin tin g in the A ge o f E nlightenm ent.

The anthology is supplied with a comprehensive introduction in which the editor discusses the origin, the functioning and the social role o f fugitive patriotic verses o f the time. Kaleta also a n n o ta te d the texts. T he works presented in the anthology reflect the political atm osphere o f the period, the ways o f thinking and feelings o f m en witnessing the growing tragedy o f the state and the nation.
