There are not m a n y inscriptions a m o n g these published in this edition which are o f an i m m e d i a t e legal interest. Nevertheless it contains m u c h material substantially adding to our k n o w l e d g e o f names (cf. № 19 'Αμμώνιος Νειλέως κροκόδειλος), o f professions (cf. № 1 6 Ζώιλος ιατρός); № 43, № 4 8 (εργαζόμενος μισθού), the legal status of some persons (cf. № 76, 112 Άντας απελεύθερος). V e r y interesting is № 126 a προσκύνημα b y A t h e n o d o r u s , tesserarius o f t h e vexillatio. A t h e n o d o r o s h a d a g o o d idea to c o m m i t the thing t o writing as soon as r e c o v e r e d f r o m illness ( № 16) and the priests h a d furnished h i m with the t o o l to d r a w up his inscription ( v . 2 0 ~ 2 2 ) . Perhaps in order to state that his courage o f having o p e n e d the gate of the sanctuary should not b e considered sacrilegeous he adds ( v . 2 3 — 2 4 ) : ].ανόσιον ΆΟην[ό]δωρος έν ού]δέν άπαντάν ούδαμ[ως]κτλ.

U n d e r this title A r a n g i o - R u i z publishes t w o small fragments f r o m a page o f a c o d e on a p a p y r u s of an u n k n o w n p r o v e -nience. It is a Latin papyrus bearing on its recto and its verso the remnants o f a legal w o r k . Certain terms in the t e x t lead one t o ascribe authorship o f the p a p y r u s to Ulpian. It deals with the fidei-commissa, y e t on the whole the w o r k does n o t appear to present a full treatise o n the subject b u t must be a s t u d y a n d analysis o f a practical case.

This is a c o p y o f an ostracon preserved in the British M u s e u m (P. 4587 A d d . 25.625). I n this ostracon dating f r o m Hadrian's e p o c h Ptolemais son o f Eirenaios acknowledges (1. 2 f f ) ομολογώ προκί-χρασΟαι τό κ ι βάριο ν μου κ [αϊ] ά[πό] τ[ψ.'/,]: ίματει(σμοϋ), φακοϋ ύπ[έρ] μην[ος "/οίαχ] w h i c h he will p a y b a c k to Gaion Cesarianos. T h e p o i n t in question is either a contract in f a v o u r o f a third person (cf. m y Law I p. 303) or the a p p o i n t m e n t o f a solutionis causa adie-ctus (cf. D . and contains a c o m p l a i n t o f Satornilus a n d Ptolemaios pre-sented to the στατιωνάριος ό επί των τόπων i. e. to the military autho-rity garrisoning p r o b a b l y in the metropolis. T h e complainants relate that on their w a y f r o m the temple s o m e thieves assaulted t h e m and r o b b e d t h e m o f certain things (cf. m y Law I, 413). T h e author of the petition is Satornilus. H e is n o t of R o m a n origin, he m u s t b e a Greek or a G r e c o - E g y p t i a n f r e e d m a n w h o h a d o b t a i n e d latinitas, or a discharged veteran w h o was given civitas. T h u s he is in some respect latinized a n d e m p l o y s in the petition f o u r Latin words three of which could h a v e been replaced b y their Greek equivalents.
