Baseball ? Volleyball ? Basketball ? Soccer ? Which of these games come from Canada ? The answer is … basketball. In fact, it’s not very popular in Canada, it’s probably the greatest American sport but it originates from Canada.
Basketball was invented by James Naismith, the Canadian sports teacher in 1891. He needed a game for his students to practice indoor team sports during the country’s long winter months.
Basketball is played by two teams of five players. The object of the game is to score points by throwing the ball into the basket of the opposing team. Each game starts with a jump ball – the referee throws the ball into the air and one player from each team jumps up and tries to hit it towards his or her team. The players have to bounce the ball on the floor as they move (this is called dribbling), or they can pass it to a team-mate. If they don’t dribble the ball, it is a foul and the referee will give a free throw to their opponents.
Today basketball is one of the most popular sport in the world. The most famous basketball teams like LA Lakers, Chicago Bulls or Orlando Magic come from America.
