A potential Jewish convert once asked a Rabbi Hillel one of the great heroes of the Jew- ish people to teach him the entire Torah while standing on one foot.

The Rabbi responded,

“What is hateful to you do not do to your fellow.

All else is commentary on that. Now, go and learn.”

Sometimes, loving our neighbours can seem downright easy.

When they speak the same language, worship the same God, vote for the same candidate and shop in the same store, our neighbours seem de- serving, not only of our love and affection, but our admiration, as well.

After all, their choices proclaim them to be worthy as well as wise!

Loving neighbours who are mirror images of ourselves is a com- mandment we can all embrace with joy. There are times, though, when the Great Command- ment is easier in theory than in practice. For people bound by pain,

addiction or fear, love of self and others requires more energy than they can summon.

Self-image can be dis- torted by sin or twisted by betrayal. Self-worth can be sapped by illness or shattered by abuse.

Struggling to survive, some people are simply too empty or too bro- ken to value themselves, much less love their neighbours. Mired in despair, they have for- gotten, or perhaps never known that they are created in the image of a loving God.

Even the question of “Who is my neighbour?” can be challeng- ing. We are constantly tempted to circle our wagons, and re-measure our boundaries—just in case. We draw lines on our maps and around our hearts, but Jesus contin- ues to erase the barriers we have so carefully created and invites us to embrace the unexpected.

Jesus reminds us that our neighbour is the person next door, the stranger around the cor-

ner, the enemy along the roadway and the someone we have yet to meet.

If our only neighbours are the safe, the famil- iar, the already beloved, then our journey is too narrow, and our hearts are too small.

“Wait!” we say. The world is a dangerous place, and this approach seems simple, even na- ïve There are people who just don’t want to be “neighbours”. There are people who reject our concern, abuse our goodwill and distrust our beliefs.

There are people who return hatred for love;

violence for peace.

There are people in this world who kill for a pair of expensive shoes or destroy something precious, just because they can. What happens to the great command- ment, then?

It is the first of these commandments; loving God with all of our being, that makes the second one even pos- sible. We must rely on God’s capacity for love

and acceptance, not our own. Before we can love others as ourselves, we must allow God to heal our brokenness and make us whole. We must trust in God’s assurance that we are His beloved sons and daughters- -worthy children of a King.

Only when we accept the image of God in our-

selves, can we see the image of God in others.

Only then can we love our neighbours---who- ever they might be--as ourselves.

Love God completely.

Love others.

As a wise man once said, all else is commentary.

Co jest moim pr- zykazani- em?

Najważniejszym przykazaniem jest to, czemu poświęcasz się całkowicie, czyli z pasją. Czy Bóg jest twoją pasją?

Poprzednia rozmowa z faryzeuszami była dla nich porażką. Pragnęli więc wypróbować Je- zusa w najwrażliwszym punkcie religii. Je- zus wskazuje na n i e r o z d z i e l n o ś ć przykazań miłości Boga i miłości bliźniego.

Jezus mówi:

„Będziesz miłował całym sercem swe- go Boga”, a także:

„Będziesz miłował bliźniego”. Już dawno zwrócono uwagę na niebezpieczeństwo zaistnienia wielkiego zła, gdy nie czynimy nawet małego dobra.

Święty Jakub zapisał:

„Kto zaś umie dobrze czynić, a nie czyni, grzeszy”. Dobrą rzeczą jest posiadać zdolności, którym oddajemy się całym sercem, ale oddawanie się całym sercem miłowaniu Boga jest nieskończenie wartościowsze niż samorealizacja. Ludzie poświęcają mnóst- wo energii na to, by rozwinąć swoje uzdol- nienia, marzenia i pla- ny. Wszystko to staje się dla nich osobistym

„przykazaniem”.

Sportowiec poświęca ogromnie dużo czasu i sił, by osiągnąć na- jlepsze efekty. Tren- ing jest dla niego n a j w a ż n i e j s z y m

„przykazaniem”, a zwycięstwo może być dla niego bogiem! Le-

karz pogłębia swoją wiedzę, umiejętności i niezmordowanie pracu- je nad tym, by stać się specjalistą.

Czy jednak bardziej będzie mu zależało, by swymi umiejętnościami służyć bliźnim, czy na tym, by mieć opinię specjalisty, a także skorzystać z wyższych wynagrodzeń? Osoba duchowna zaangażuje się w rozwój duchowy, bo pragnie dojść do święceń albo ślubów.

Ale czy dlatego chce to osiągnąć, bo zależy jej całkowicie na przyjaźni Boga, czy też dlatego, by poczuć się wartościowszym albo żyć samolubnie, nie ponosząc trudów życia rodzinnego?

Co naprawdę jest jej „przykazaniem”?

Naukowiec próbuje rozwiązać zawiłe kwes- tie, ale czy jego „przykazaniem” jest dobro bliźniego, czy osobista ambicja? Można każdą pasję uczynić swoistą interpretacją przykaza- nia. Z pasją rozwijam swoje zdolności pisar- skie, ponieważ chcę przez moje słowa głosić całkowicie chwałę Boga i dobro bliźniego.

Ale mogę pisać o Bogu i bliźnim właśnie ten komen- tarz, ponieważ chcę zyskać opinię orygi- nalnego komentatora i uzyskać wysokie hono- rarium. Co naprawdę jest moim „przykazaniem”, które mnie motywuje? Ludzie ze swoich zainteresowań, uzdolnień, ambicji, talentów czynią najważniejsze „przykazanie”.

A tymczasem właśnie najważniejsze przykazanie pow- inno być pasją,

ambicją i zaintereso- waniem człowieka.

A najważniejsze jest miłować Boga i bliźniego!

Listopad – Msze za zmarłych

Nasz katechizm ka- tolicki wyliczając „Uc- zynki miłosierne co do duszy” jako ostatni uczynek miłosierdzia wylicza: „Modlić się za żywych i zmarłych”.

Tak więc modlitwa za zmarłych to nasz ludzki obowiązek, to nasze chrześcijańskie zadanie. Miesiąc listopad jest tym miesiącem kiedy to oddajemy cześć naszym drogim zmarłym, kiedy przywołujemy ich w naszej pamięci i ciągle chcemy z serca im podziękować za to wszystko co dla nas uczynili będąc częścią naszego ziemskiego życia.

Są to często nasi rodzice, rodzeństwo, nasi kochani dziad- kowie, czy sąsiedzi, przyjaciele, a może nasi pełni poświęcenia

nauczyciele czy księża z rodzinnej parafii.

Nawet trudno ich wszystkich wyliczyć.

My ciągle jeszcze mamy wobec nich tak wielki dług wdzięczności za wszystko co dzisiaj dzięki nim posiadamy, jakimi jesteśmy ludźmi.

Niech ten zbliżający się miesiąc listopad będzie naszym czasem, aby im za to wszystko podziękować. Tego długu często nawet nie potrafimy spłacić w całości, bo nasze życie jest za krótkie.

D l a t e g o najpiękniejszym dar- em wdzięczności dla nich wszystkich będzie nasza modlitwa i ofi- ara Mszy św., która jest takim bukietem duch- owych róż. Nie mamy innej możliwości jak tylko poprzez ten duchowy dar pomóc im w osiągnieciu nieba i bycia z Bogiem w wieczności. Nasza par- afia jak co roku będzie ofiarować przez cały miesiąc listopad 30 Mszy św. za zmarłych poleconych w waszych

„wypominkach”.

Prosimy o zabranie ze sobą kart „wypominkowych”, wyp- isanie na nich imion i nazwisk Waszych drogich zmarłych, włożenie tych kart do koperty, wraz z ofiarą mszalną i zwrócenie ich do jed- nego z księży przed 2 listopada. Karty na

„wypominki” znajdują się w przedsionku koś cioła.

Różaniec za Zmarłych

Od pierwszej niedzieli listopada będziemy kontynuować odmawianie Różańca pół godziny przed Mszą św. tj. o godz.

12:30pm w intencji

wszystkich naszych drogich zmarłych poleconych na kart- ach wypominkowych.

Serdecznie zapraszam do udziału w tej modlitwie. Pomóżmy naszym zmarłym w Czyśćcu cierpiącym by i nam kiedyś ktoś mógł pomóc.

Zapraszamy do udziału w adoracji Najświętszego Sakra- mentu w każdy wtorek od godz. 6 –7pm. Po zakończonej adoracji Msza św. o godz. 7pm po angielsku. Podczas adoracji Najświętszego Sakramentu jest też możliwość przystąpienia do Sakra- mentu spowiedzi od godz. 6 – 6:50pm. Do- datkowo Sakrament spowiedzi po polsku jest jeszcze w każdą niedzielę od godz.

Różaniec Do Granic Nieba: pr- zyjmujemy Dzieci Nien- arodzone do naszych rodzin

Intencją Różańca Do Granic Nieba, za- planowanego na dni 1-8 listopada 2020 roku w Polsce będzie włączenie dzieci nienarodzonych do naszych wspólnot rodzinnych, uleczenie ran związanych z ich utratą, oraz przebłaganie za wszystkie grzechy, zaniedbania i zranienia z tym związane.

W tej modlitwie będziemy wołać do Boga, by śmierć nie miała już dostępu do naszej rodziny; oraz prosić dzieci nienarod- zone o wybaczenie i modlitwę za nas.

Różaniec Do Granic Nieba będzie miał as- pekt indywidualny i wspólnotowy.

Będzie to propozy- cja modlitwy dla rodzin, oraz dla parafii.

Wymiar indywidualny Różańca Do Granic Nieba będzie polegał na tym, by 1 listopada br., w Uroczystość Wszyst- kich Świętych, podczas nawiedzania grobów rodzinnych, zwrócić się do wszystkich dzieci

nienarodzonych, na przestrzeni całej his- torii rodziny, przez wszystkie pokolenia. Te dzieci, które zostały za- bite, prosimy o wybaczenie. Dzieciom, które odeszły z innych pow- odów, dziękujemy za ich obecność.

Wszystkie je prosimy

o wstawiennictwo. Mod- litwa ta będzie aktem świadomego włączenia dzieci nienarodzonych do wspólnoty rodzinnej. Parafie w całej Polsce zaproszone są do organizowania modlitwy różańcowej przez wszystkie dni oktawy Uroczystości Wszyst-

kich Świętych (od 2 do 8 listopada) - to będzie wymiar wspólnotowy tegorocznego wydarze- nia.

Dodatkowo przez osiem dni oktawy, zachęcamy do ofiarow- ania odpustu zupełnego za dusze zmarłych, które cierpią w czyśćcu

za grzechy przeci- wko życiu. W naszej wspólnocie parafialnej będziemy się łączyć z parafiami w Polsce i odmawiać różaniec za Dusze w Czyśćcu cierpiące w każdą niedzielę miesiąca listopada.

What about the Church’s teaching on Purgatory?

On Sept. 17, 2002, our late beloved Pope St. John Paul II stressed the need to pray for the Souls in Purgatory. He said, "The first and highest form of charity for brothers is the ardent desire for their eter- nal salvation … Christian love knows no boundaries and goes beyond the limits of space and time, ena- bling us to love those who have already left this earth." Therefore, not only the belief in purgatory but also the spiritual duty to pray for the souls there remains part of our Catholic faith.

Contrary to what some may erroneously believe, Vatican II's "Dogmatic Constitution on the Church"

asserted, "This sacred council accepts loyally the venerable faith of our ancestors in the living commun- ion which exists between us and our brothers who are in the glory of Heaven or who are yet being puri- fied after their death; and it proposes again the decrees of the Second Council of Nicaea, of the Council of Florence, and of the Council of Trent" (No. 51).

The key is to see the beauty behind the doctrine of purgatory. We believe that God gave us a free will so that we could choose between right and wrong, good and evil. Our free will allows us to make the one fundamental choice to love God. An act of the free will also entails responsibility. When we choose not to love God and thereby sin, we are responsible for that sin. God in His justice holds us accountable for such sins, but in His love and mercy desires us to be reconciled to Himself and our neighbour. During our life on this earth, if we really love God, we examine our consciences, admit our sins, express contrition for them, confess them, and receive absolution for them in the sacrament of penance. We perform penances and other sacrifices to heal the hurt caused by sin. In so doing, we are continually saying "yes" to the Lord. In a sense our soul is like a lens when we sin, we cloud the lens; it gets dirty, and we lose the focus of God in our lives. Through confession and penance, God cleanses the "lens" of our soul. When we die, if we leave this life fundamentally loving God, dying in His grace and friendship, and free of mortal sin, we will have eternal salvation and attain the beatific vision we will see God for who He is. If we die with venial sins or without having done sufficient penance for our sins, God in His love, mercy and justice will purify our souls, "cleanse the lens" so to speak. After such purification, the soul will then be united with God in heaven and enjoy the beatific vision.

As we ponder the beautiful understanding of purgatory, we must never forget the importance of praying for and having Masses offered for the repose of the souls of our loved ones. Pope Leo XIII in his encyclical Mirae caritatis (1902) beautifully elaborated this point and emphasized the connection between the communion of saints with the Mass: "The grace of mutual love among the living, strengthened and increased by the Sacrament of the Eucharist, flows, especially by virtue of the Sacrifice [of the Mass], to all who belong to the communion of saints. For the communion of saints is simply ... the mutual sharing of help, atonement, prayers, and benefits among the faithful, those already in the heavenly fatherland, those consigned to the purifying fire, and those still making their pilgrim way here on earth. These all form one city, whose head is Christ, and whose vital principle is love. Faith teaches that although the august Sacrifice can be offered to God alone, it can nevertheless be celebrated in honour of the saints now reigning in Heaven with God, who has crowned them, to obtain their intercession for us, and also, according to apostolic tradition, to wash away the stains of those brethren who died in the Lord but without yet being wholly purified." Likewise, the Catechism asserts, "From the beginning the Church has honoured the memory of the dead and offered prayers in suffrage for them, above all the Eucharistic Sacrifice, so that, thus purified, they may attain the beatific vision of God" (No. 1032). Therefore, when we face the death of someone, even a person who is not Catholic, to have a Mass offered for the repose of his soul and to offer our prayers are more beneficial and comforting than any other sympathy card or bouquet of flowers. Most importantly, we should always remember our own dearly departed loved ones in the Holy Mass and through our own prayers and sacrifices to help in their gaining eternal rest. Since we are approaching the feast of All Souls (Nov. 2), now is a good time to remember our deceased loved ones having Masses offered for their repose. - Fr. William Saunders

- NOVEMBER- Month of the Holy Souls

Envelopes and forms are available at the back of church if you wish your deceased family & friends to be remembered in our Masses. Please complete a form and place it in the envelope along with your donation.

Mass is said daily (except when there is a funeral) for all named on the lists. Envelopes ARE opened and stipends removed. Lists are then placed before the Altar.

The names of these departed Souls will be remembered at all the extra November Req- uiem Masses during November. Since the dead can no longer pray for themselves, it is important that we, their relatives, friends and benefactors, assist their passage through Pur- gatory by prayer, offering the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, and Mass Intentions, for them.

We will value the same acts of spiritual charity when our own time comes. In addi- tion to All Souls’ Day, do plan to come to at least one other Requiem Mass during this month of the Holy Souls.
