Cruise liners continue to uphold their
gold-chip image, and enterprising
owners are still able to find finance to
fund prestigious newbuilding projects,
with several interesting vessels currently
on order or under construction. Typical
of these are two enlarged versions of
Royal Caribbean Cruise Line's successful
74,000grt Sovereign of the Seas
(pictured here), which are being built at
the Alsthom-Atlantique yard in France.
Further details can be found in Tony
Newman's annual cruise liner report on
page Ell.
The latest new ship to Join the fleet of
Denmark's Maersk company (A. P. Möller
group) is the 61,000dwt container liner
Maren Maerslc. She is designed to carry
up to 4,000TEU, including 45ft models
and 500 reefer boxes. A Mitsui-MAN
B&W 10K90!^C engine ofS3,600bhp
gives a service speed of 23 knots. Maren
Maersk is the sixth of 12 new ships
ordered by the Möller group from
Odense Staalskibsvaerft, one of
Denmark's currently buoyant shipyards.
A special feature on Denmark begins on
page E35.

Gambiing fanatics wiii enjoy a cruise on
Carnival's new super-liner Fantasy, as
tfiis illustration of a section ofthe
massive casino reveals. The new liner,
built by Wartsila IVlarine and finished by
IVIasa-Yards, will soon be off on her first
commercial voyage from Miami. A full
appraisal of this giant diesel-electric 'fun
ship' starts on page E80.
The 35,000grt 0\au H o l l a n d i a , first of a
pair of new jumbo passenger/vehicle
ferries for Olau Line's thriving
Sheerness-Viissingen route, is seen here
at the newly completed berth at
Sheerness. Although passenger capacity
remains the same as the operator's
previous pair of ferries, freight capacity is
doubled - to 122 trailers. See our article

New competition for European
low-speed engine designers: Mitsubistii is to
extend its UECLSII range by the addition
of an 850mm bore, ultradong-stroke
model to complement the 750mm bore
design (shown here in crass-section),
which was introduced in 1987. The new
engine with a maximum rating of
5,250bhp/cylinder will almost double the
upper power limit of Mitsubishi's current
portfolio; this Japanese designer is also
aiming for long service intervals. See our
annual propulsion review which begins
on page Ell2.

The 370,000ft3 De\ M o n t e Planter (seen
here on sea trials) is the first of nine
newdesign refrigerated cargo ships
four of this size and five of 580,000ft^
-built by Astilleros Espanoles for the Del
Monte organisation (now owned by Polly
Peck). She has space for 3,300 pallets
and 124FEU containers, and the
pedestal-mounted 19-tonne Hagglund
cranes can work in tandem to lift 40ft
containers. These and other new designs
are featured in our special report on
reefer ships, which begins on page E185.
A typical ultra-modern manne control
console engineered by Valmet
Automation. In an article on page El82,
Doug Clarke outlines his belief that
super-automated bndge control and
navigation systems for one-man
operation are just around the corner, and
that aircraft technology could weil be a
feature of these.

In our July/August 1989 issue (page E265)
we reported on ttie interesting propeller
boss cap fin (PBCF) developed by iVIitsui
OSK Lines to enhance propeller efficiency
and seen here in twin-screw format. At
the time we noted that 52 orders had
been received; this figure has now
climbed to 73. New contracts for both fast
and stow ships include retrofitted units
for two twin-screw ferries for fVleimon
Taiyo Ferry, and those for a pair of
59,289grt (114,000dwt) tankers for VSSI
Sun (Teekay Shipping), ordered from
Hyundai. PBCFs are also to be retrofitted
to three other similar-sized tankers for the
same owner. We hope to report more
fully on this appendage in a future issue;
meanwhile, other advances in the
propellers, thrusters and steenng gear
field are reported in our special feature
which begins on page E250.

A new ship prototype that could herald
significant changes in container transport
is about to enter service. This month
(Au-gust) the Teraoka Shipyard in Japan
de-livers to Bell Lines the lead vessel of what
will hopefully by six 300TEU ships
con-structed without hatch covers, for use on
Bell's door-to-door European services.
Bell Pioneer (whose hold cross-section is
seen here) can load up to five tiers of
box-es without lashing, a sixth tier with
twistiocks fitted, or seven tiers with
lash-ings. Our feature on new-generation
con-tainer ships begins on page E313.
A dolphin-look for Crown Princess, P&O's
new cruise liner from Fincantieri's
Monfalcone yard. Italian shipbuilding is
making a major return to passenger ship
construction, including smaller yacht
types. Yards in that country are also
en-joying current success with chemical and
gas tanker contracts and with a number
of major conversion projects. A special
report on Italy begins on page E336.

Advanced container ship designs are one
of the strengths of German shipyards,
with equaily interesting portfoiios in this
ship type now being contributed by yards
in East Germany. The 34,800dwt Bonn
Express, seen here, was one of the two
sister ships compieted iast year by HDW
at Kiel for Hapag-Lloyd, which took the
Ship of the Future concept to new levels.
On page E3B5 of this issue, we examine
the potential for a hopefuily united
ship-building industry in East/West Germany.
Supertanker construction returns to
Ja-pan. Seen here (in June this year) at
Hi-tachi's Ariake yard are a number of
massive prefabricated hull modules
awaiting assembly to form a 280,000dwt
VLCC. Our speciai feature on page E377
examines current designs woridwide for
ships above 100,000dwt and some of the
techniques being employed or
consider-ed for their construction.

Naval Architect
The Japanese shipbuiiding industry's
prowess in manne technology continues'
to advance on all fronts, allied to
con-siderable success on the export front.
Typical of a number of yards with a high
percentage of export orders for advanced
designs is Tsuneishi Shipbuilding, which
earlier this year launched the 21,000dwt
container ship Trein Maersk (pictured
here) for the Danish A P (toiler group.
This 1,W6TEU vessel will be equipped
with a 44-tonne capacity travelling gantry
crane. Our special feature on Japan
be-gins on page E425.
Safety remains a high priority on every
navai architect's basic design sheet for
ferries and passenger ships. This
com-plex and wide-raQging subject, of
con-siderable imponance to both new and
existing ships, is examined in a special
feature beginning on page E455, where
one ofthe many potential items of
equip-ment discussed is the Seabass inflatable
buoyancy bag concept. This technique is
seen here being demonstrated on tine UK
Royal Navy fleet tender A p p l e b y .
