Visualization of a city in accordance

to the preferences of the pedestrians

The Figure 2 shows the map based on the geographical ty-pologies of the shapes. In Fig-ure 2.2 and 2.3, the streets re-sponded as good or bad are shown. The streets referred as positive shape a central line lo-cated along the north-south di-rection. In contrast, the streets with negative one are not con-nected each other but spread out over the city. And most of them lay on the east-west di-rection. In Figure 2.4 the stron-gest positive areas (2, 3, and 4) are the three public plazas in the city. However, the area be-tween southern and northern districts (5) has relatively low responses.

The project ‘Tracking Delft’ is a pilot research project inquiring pedestrian movement pat-terns in the city center of Delft conducted in November 2009 to January 2010. 109 people expressed their experiences in a city as a form of preference map; they marked the areas on a city map which places they liked or disliked in the city, with short written explanations. This technique enables people to express and allows researcher to access their experience. We ex-pected that they would not describe the physical city itself but rather their personal impres-sions, experiences, and memories of the city. Figure 1 shows an example of the map. This poster introduces the visualizations of their preferences and explains their meanings.

The maps in Figure 3 contain aggregated shapes that have a same description, re-gardless of its geographic classification. Figure 3.1 shows the area where all shapes are combined together. We may say that the boundary of this map is the border of the ‘city core’ being recognized by vis-itors. Figure 3.2 shows the unsafe plac-es. The several streets run in a southeast direction (1) mentioned as being narrow and dark at night. Also, the cross streets (2) were described as too crowded with cars, pedestrians, and cyclists. Four per-sons noted that the square (3) has many loitering teenagers. Figure 3.3 shows the bad accessibility indicates the parts of the city (5) and (6) were difficult to access by foot. The red area including ‘Markt’ (6) mentioned as the place too far from the Zuidpoort car park (3) to walk to. Also, the northern area of ‘Markt’ has many attrac-tive shops but they are scattered around the shopping area. Lastly, Figure 3.4 re-veals controversial opinions on the ‘Bas-tiaansplein’ (3) mentioned that this

shop-Responses from the participants are inevitably subjective and personal. The value of the re-sult is an important motivation for why they behave in a certain fashion. Thus, it would be an interesting research area to explore the relationship between pedestrians’ movement patterns and their preferences. Further research can be carried out regarding how the good and bad emotions involved in certain public places influence an individual’s spatial behavior.

ping complex is ugly and does not fit well into the historic value of Delft. However, some people still said that it is a pleasant area with many shops and public facilities such as a library and theater.
