The determination of field water capacity (W P P ), moisture of initial plant growth inhibition start (W P H W R ) and moisture of permanent w ilt ing of plants (W T W R ) is relatively difficult and labour-consuming. The water retention ability of soil is most strongly affected b y its mechanical composition and humus content [3, 4, 5].

For a long time attempts w ere m ade to determine water capacity of soils on the basis o f their mechanical composition. B y the mathematico- -statistical methods linear and parabolic relationships w ere calculated between one or two and even three mechanical composition fractions

[1, 2, 3, 6].

B y Christopoulos and Liofeopoulos the following formulae for the W P P calculation w ere developed dn 1965:

W P P = — 3.03 + 0.33 (% of clay + % of loam) (1) W P P = 1.342 + 0.3514 (% of clay) + 0.3907 (% of loam) (2) W P P = 0.013 (% of sand) + 0.3648 (% of clay) + 0.2704 (% of loam) (3)

In these investigations per cent of sand, clay and loam was quoted according to the classification into fractions valid in the U S A . In 1967 the following formulae w ere proposed by the author :

W P P = 0.0036x2 + 0.6312a:— 11.03 (4)

W P H W R = 0.6539* — 0.004132x2 — 1.5157 (5)

W T W R = 0.149x + 0.73 (6)

where x — per cent of clayey particles of 0 < 0 .0 2 mm.

B y Afanasjew and Panfiłow the formulae very approximate to those of Ghristopoulos and Liokopoulos were developed in 1969. However, the sand, clay and silt content assumed by them is based on fractional classi fication applied in the Soviet Union.

They are:

W P P = 0.0279 (% of sand) + 0.1847 (% of silt) + 0.5357 (% of clay) (9) It seemed that more reliable would be the results based upon per centage of all the fractions and as far as aralble layer is concerned also upon humus content.

O ur investigations were carried out at two stages: at the first stage 7 soils representative for particular mechanical composition groups (loose sand, loamy sand, light loam, medium loam, heavy loam, clay, silty formation) and then 7 equations with seven unknown values w ere de veloped and solved by the method of matrix determinants. In such a w ay for each o f 7 fractions the coefficients have been found, which after substitution into any formula based -upon mechanical composition gave the same values as the laboratory determinations of the following indices :

W W K — capillary w ater capacity,

W W P , W P H W K , W C Z W R — moisture of total plant growth inhibition, W T W R and M H — maximal hygroscopicity.

It appeared, however, that at application of the indices to different soils than those used in the present work, a considerable divergence occurred between the values calculated and experimentally determined. Therefore, at the second stage laborious determinations of particular properties of 298 soil samples taken from arable and subarable layers of various mineral soils (for each mechanical composition group b y 12 samples from arable and by 10 samples from subarable layers, in total 168 + 130) w ere carried out.

In the soil samples investigated mechanical composition was determin ed by the Bouyoucos’ method modified by Casagrande— Prószyński and the water retention ability— (by the Richards’ method on tile plates and membrane, somewhat modified b y the author. In the samples taken from arable layer the organic matter content was determined by the T yw in ’s method.

To eliminate different condensation state of the samples, mainly at water capacity determinations, they w ere reduced to a normal conden sation (mean density) b y full saturation w ith water. For each soil sample:

W P P = 4.393 + 0.583 (% of clay)

W P P = 2.794 + 0.157 (% of silt) + 0.508 (% of clay)

Determ ination of w ater capacity... 37

— field water capacity,

— moisture of initial plant growth inhibition,

— moisture of permanent wilting of plants w ere determined.

In view o f am enormous numerical material obtained (Tables 1 and 2), only mean values for particular groups are given.

As an example also the results obtained for one of the groups (medium silty loam) are presented.

It is a w ell-know n fact that the water retention ability (except silty formations) grows along with the percentage increase of the finest fractions, i.e., of 0 < 0.02 mm [3, 4, 6].

For the great majority of water constants this relationship is para bolic one. Not without effect on water conditions of soils are silt and even sand fractions.

If then particular water constants depend on the content of particular soil fractions, it would be most appropriate to find such multifactorial relationship. Its determination would be possible on mathematical way.

According to the above procedure the program for the computer U M C -G IE R has been working o u t г. By the least square method it ought to select such coefficients, by which at multiplication of percentage of particular fractions in soil and then summing up, a value of definite water capacity most approximate to that determined on the experimental w ay could be found.

It would enable to calculate an approximate water capacity value (W PP , W P H W R or W T W R ) on the basis of mechanical composition and eventual humus content without labourious and complicated determi nation. The results w ill the more approximate actual values, the greater number of fractions w ill be taken into consideration in the calculations. Therefore w e took into considerations practically all the remaining fractions except sand (the content of which w as denoted b y a single number) in such groups as recommended at division of soil into fractions (Polish Pedological Society). In arable layers also the organic matter percentage was taken into consideration. In view of the fact that the calculation of particular water capacities for arable layer was based on mechanical composition and humus content and for suibarable layer-on mechanical im p o s itio n alone, the data obtained are presented separately. For arable layers :

W P P = 0.0188*! + 0.0879*2 + 0.240*3 + 0.296*4 +

+ 0.649*5 + 0.316*e + 2.34x7 (10)

W e are of the opinion that the recommended n ew method of w ater capacity calculation on the basis of mechanical composition and humus content can be fully applicable in the practice and partly also in research works.

y = a xl + b x 2 -f ... -i- f x 6 ou ï- g x 7 ou:

y = a xx + b x 2 + ... + f x 6 oder g x 7

х ъ x 2, ..., Xe — prozentischer Gehalt einzelner mechanischen Fraktionen, x 1 — prozentischer Gehalt der organischen Verbindungen.
