The present volume of "Balti -Ponti Studies" is an attempt to register this
breakthrough and a proposal fora new ttingof the Trz inie phenomenoninto
thesynthesisofEarly BronzeAge Europe.The re ordsin lude rudimentsofnew
regional systematizations,foundationsof their hronologiesbased onradio arbon
datings and a dis ussion of theme hanisms of so io- ultural hanges whi h gave
risetotheTrz inie ulturalarea andlater ontributedtoitsdisintegration.

THE SOSNYTSA CULTURE OF THE DESNA AREA AND
ITS LINKS WITH EASTERNNEIGHBOURS
The Sosnytsa Culture, rst as a type of reli s, was de ned by S.S.
Berezan-skaya [1957℄. L ater on, she in luded those reli s in the Eastern Trz inie
Cul-ture [1972:130-134℄.I.I.Artemenko regarded theSosnytsareli s asa separate
ar- haeologi al ulture, extrapolating it to the Sosnytsa and Kiev lo al versions of
the EasternTrz inie Culture [1961; 1987:106-113℄.J. D¡browski [1972℄and V.I.
Klo hko[1993:63-65℄sharedsimilarviews.Allthoseresear hershadnodoubts
on- erning the asso iation of the Sosnytsaor the EasternTrz inie Culture with the
Trz inie {Komarov ulturalandhistori ommunity.
Monuments of the Sosnytsa Culture (a ording to I.I. Artemenko) o upied
entralandeasternareasoftheUpperDnieperbasin,withthemaximum
on entra-tionintheUkrainianPolesie zone.DowntheDnieper,theSosnytsareli sdes end
theforest-steppezonetotheRosriverinthesouth.TotheeastoftheDnieper,the
Sosnytsareli so upyawidewedgealongtheSozh,theDesnaandtheSeimrivers,
formingthemosteasterngroupofreli softheTrz inie -Komarov ommunity.The
eastern frontier of the ulture lies along the Oka-Desna watershed, while its
so-uthernedgestret hesalongtheTrubizh,theOsterandtheSeimrivers.Therefore,
in theeast,theSosnytsaCulture reli neverleaves theboundariesof theDnieper
basin,whi hwasthegeographi alni he forits arriers.
In the hronologyof the Bronze ultures of the Dnieper area, the Sosnytsa
Cultureo upiesthepla ebetweentheMnogovalikovayaCulture(MC)and,
possi-bly,theMaryanivka CulturebelowandtheL ebedivkaCultureabove.Theauthors
donotshareI.I.Artemenko'sviewthattheL ebedivkareli s omprisethelatestage
oftheSosnytsaCultureand,followingS.S.Berezanskaya,regardthemasan
indivi-dual ulture.Thisrelativepositionalsodeterminesthetimeofdevelopmentofthe
SosnytsaCulturetobewithinthethirdquarterofthese ondmillenniumBC.There
havebeenattemptstodeterminetheperiodoftheSosnytsaCultureinternally,
Spe ialattentionshouldbegiventothelargesetofSosnytsareli sinthemiddle
partoftheDesna,abovethe ityofChernihiv.There,ontherightbankoftheriver,
lies the eponymi site near thetown of Sosnytsa.About 50 km to the north-east
of Sosnytsa, along theDesna, there is the village of Mezin, known forits Upper
Paleolithi site.Due tothee ortsofV.Y.Kurylenko,dire torofthelo alnatural
historymuseum,the mostsigni ant of urrentlyknown lusters ofSosnytsa sites
wasdis overedintheMezinmi rodistri t(Fig.1).
Theexplorationzonein ludesthehigh,right-bankoftheDesnaandthebroad,
left-bank reekinthenorthernend oftheKoropydistri t oftheChernihivregion
alongtheborderoftheSumyregionofUkraine. Thestudiedmi rodistri tisabout
25kmlong,stret hingalongtheDesnabed,andabout8kmwide,fromthevillageof
Rady hevtothevillageofKurylivka.There,30yearsofsystemati observationsand
re onnaissan e haveprodu ed 36 householdsites of the SosnytsaCulture. These
in lude 10 major settlementsranging in area from 2.5to10 he tares, 13medium
(1-2 he tares) and 13 small ones (up to 1 he tare). At most of the settlements,
thelayer of ndswas 0.2 to 1 meter deep. The Mezin site and theMezin island
are remarkable for their deep layers of up to 1.8 meters and up to 1.5 meters,
respe tively (Table 1). Most of thereli s are foundin the ood-lands(22)of the
leftbanklo atedupto7metersoverthewaterlevel,andontheislands.The
right--banksettlementsarelo atedhigh|20to60metersoverthewaterlevelbetween
gullies at theDesna's high right bank.The lo ation of thereli s isuneven: small
andmedium sites surroundthelarge onesand form groupsof5or 6settlements
(thePopoveravinenear Kurylivka),with theKudlayivgroupof8Sosnytsasitesup
theDesna,andtheKonotopgroupof10sitesdowntheDesna (explorationsdone
byV.Y. Kurylenko,Table 3).
TheSosnytsasitesnoti eablyex eedtherepresentationofotherar haeologi al
ultures in terms of settlements as well as in terms of the amount of olle ted
material [Kurylenko, Otrosh henko 1996℄. Spe i ally, the Sosnytsa sites of the
Mezin mi rodistri t produ ed 3859 fragments of de orated erami s, while only
743 ndsbelonged totheMaryanivka, 605totheMiddleDnieper, and152tothe
L ebedivka Cultures (Table 2). The 6 to 1 ratio of the Sosnytsa erami s to the
Maryanivka ndsisalsoobservedintheKoropymi rodistri t.SitesintheKudlayiv
mi rodistri ttothenorthof Mezin ontainsimilarkeytypesofpots,althoughless
elaborately de orated. Therefore, the olle ted materials prove thatthe Sosnytsa
sitesoftheMezinmi rodistri tareparti ularlyri hin nds.SixsitesoftheMezin
area (the Popova, the Kurylivka-2, the Zakhidna Dubyna, the Mezin Island, the
NorthernandSouthernBerezova,theTymonivskyBir)andtwositesoftheKoropy
(Kovalen hykha Island, Lysa Hora { the Southern way) feature a well-preserved
ulturallayerandgoodpotential formajor ar haeologi al ex avations(Table 3).

rather diverse ornaments of the vessels feature motifs of \barbed wire", zig-zags,
ombinationsofin lined andhorizontallines,suspendedtriangles, fringedverti al
uts, rhombuses,meanders,horizontalherring-bonepatternsandverti al zig-zags.
Shouldersof thetulip-shapedvessels are often nished with a single ir ular rim.
Smoothly de lined edge of thevessel's ne k is slightly sharpened and nished in
theshapeofa\ ollar". Smoothlysalient pro leof thevessel's bodyisinterrupted
onlybythepulled\rope's"edge.Additional,thoughnotne essary elementsof
de- orationwere \pearls"along thene k, rarelyalongthebody.Vesselbottomswere
smalland at.Inadditiontothedominatingsharpenedsti k,anot hedpun h,and
in some ases, a ne ordwere usedas de orationtools(Fig.2-6).Afragment of
the edge of an angobed up, de orated with the Andronovo-style \du ks"
swim-mingtowardsea hother(Fig.3:4)wasfoundonMezinIsland.Other ndsin lude
de orated oni andbi oni plummets.

notedthattheMnogovalikovaya erami s spread notonlyin theL owerSeim, the
DesnaandtheMiddleDnieperareas,butfurtherwestwardasfarastheCarpathian
area[Sveshnikov1990;Bandrivsky1997℄.Thisimpulse|easternbyorigin| ould
notbut play a ertain role in thepro ess of formation of theTrz inie -Komarov
Culture and thehistori ommunity. Note the nds| though in di erent graves
|oftheSosnytsabowlandanovalbonebu kle, typi alforthelateMCCsites,at
theBronzeburialsiteinthevillageofKazarovy hioftheKievregion(ex avations
byV.A. Kruts).
The ir le ofpossible easternneighboursof theSosnytsapopulationin luded
late Bronze ultures. The Desna-Oka watershed at the North-East,in the forest
zone, separatedtheSosnytsafrom thearea ofthePoznyakovoSrubnaya-type
ul-tureintheOkabasinopeninguptotheUpperVolgaregion[Bader,Popova1987℄.
Wehavenoinformationaboutvisitsof arriersoftheSosnytsaCulturetotheOka
basin.Meanwhile,O.N.BaderreferstothewestboundmovementofthePoznyakovo
populationto theUpperDesna region, quotingmaterials from theex avationsat
theYudynovosoilgrave attherighttributaryoftheDesna, theSudost,in the
Po-garskydistri toftheBryanskregionofRussia, arriedoutbyK.M. Polikarpovy h,
andat thesettlementnear thevillage ofBorovy hiat theleftbank oftheDesna,
20kmnorthofNovhorod-SiverskyoftheChernihivregion.Thistremendously
im-portantobservationidenti esthewesternborder ofthesphereofin uen e ofthe
PoznyakovoCulturealongthePo hep-Pohar-NovhorodSiverskyandtheSudost
ri-verline, i.e.,alongthe urrentUkrainian-Russianborder.Inthis onne tion,there
isa need to take a loser look andevaluate the ultural origin of theUpper
De-sna sitestotheeast ofthedrawnline, whi hI.I. Artemenko[1987℄had nodoubt
aboutattributingtotheSosnytsaCultureand,therefore,totheTrz inie -Komarov
ultural-histori ommunity.
Firstofall,let us onsiderthewell-known omplexfrom themoundnear the
villageofKvetunoftheBryanskregion, ontainingabronzespearheadandadagger
with a ast open-workedhaft[Padyn1963℄.Nosimilar burial ritual oritems have
ever been found either in graves or settlements of the Sosnytsa Culture. There
are no erami s inKvetun, andthere are noobje tive reasons forattributingthat
omplextotheSosnytsaCulture.Meanwhile,similarsetsofitemswerefoundthree
timesingravesoftheZase hnoyemoundontheMiddleOkariver,a lassi mound
site of thePoznyakovoCulture [Chelyapov1992:Fig. 6:1-2;19:2-3; 26:1-2℄.Those
graves didnotdisplay anysigns ofburial (theritual ofburying the orpse)either,
penetrations, situated to the west of Kvetun in the neighbouring distri t of the
Bryanskregion.The losestanddire tanalogueoftheKvetundaggerwasfoundin
theSeimamound [Bader1970:Fig.51:B℄.
WebelievethatthesitesinvestigatedbyI.I.ArtemenkointheBryansk-Desna
areashouldnotbereferredtotheSosnytsaCulture,buttothelo alSrubnaya-type
ulture,geneti allylinkedtothePoznyakovoCulture.Naturally,thisissuedemands
more thoroughdevelopment, whi h is impossible withoutthe publi ation of sites
studied by I.I. Artemenko. In the ontext of the observations performed so far,
the Sosnytsa sites of the Mezin and the Kudlayivka mi rodistri ts represent that
ulture'soutpostat theNorthernEast.

Anotherpie e of eviden e of thepenetrationoftheSrubnayaCulture tothe
Desna area istheburial mound omplex in Sednivof theChernihiv distri t upon
theSnovriver (Samokvasov1908:18-19).No tra esof thebodywere foundinthe
spa ious pit, but in the south-western orner of it there was a Srubnaya bronze
knifeinawoodensheath,withdeepgroovesbetweentherhombi atstopandthe
blade.ThiskindofknivesinfoundingravesoftheBerezhnivka-MayivkaSrubnaya

Thevillage ofSednivwasalsothepla ewhereaSosnytsasettlementandaground
burial site ontaining remations of the Sosnytsa Culture were found [Multanen,
Multanen1997:92℄.
Themostobviouseviden eofthepresen e oftheSrubnaya ommunityinthe
area oftheSosnytsasitesare materials fromtheMalopolovetske burialsiteofthe
Fastivdistri t,theKievregion,in theRosarea.Grave12alone(double, urledon
theright side, orpsesoriented towardsthe North-East)produ ed11 vessels and
de nitefragmentsofSrubnaya erami s[Lysenko1996:Fig.1:3-6;8:11-16℄.Another
groupof erami s fromthis omplex isasso iatedbytheauthoroftheex avations
withtheTrz inie -Komarov ommunity.S.D.Lysenkoreferredtheburialsitetothe
period of the developed Srubnaya Culture. However, re ent investigations prove
thattheright-side burial ritual and thepresen e of goblets onhigh oni al bases
are hara teristi ofthelate periodoftheBerezhnivka-Mayivka Culturefollowing
ourterminology[Otrosh henko,1994;Lytvynenko1994℄.Theyprovethein uen e
of the steppe population on the ulture of the dwellers of the Kievan Dnieper
area, up to dire t proliferation of the Srubnayaindividuals in the habitats of the
Trz inie -Komarov ommunity.
Goblets ona oni base, similar to the onefound in Malopolovetske and to
thefragmentfromMezinIsland,spreadwhentheforest-steppePokrovskSrubnaya
Culture isaboutto ease toexist, and arriersof theSuskan-typeof reli s orthe
MiddleVolga Culturebe ome eastern partners oftheSosnytsa population[Kolev
1991℄.Itshouldbe notedthattheornament ofalternating horizontalandoblique
lines on a sharp-edged potfrom Malopolovetske ismade in the Suskantradition
[Lysenko 1996,Fig. 8℄. The losest analogue to theornament onthegoblet from
MezinIsland(Fig.3:3)isfoundontheba ksideofthe erami astingmouldfound
intheBerezhnivka-Mayivka SrubnayaCultureoftheHrushovaBalkasettlementin
the Luhansk region near the Ukrainian-Russian border [Tatarinov 1979:261:Fig.
3:6℄, while theornamental motiforiginates from theAndronovo ommunity (the
AndronovoCulture)[Lysenko1996:Table 3,4,5℄.
The analogy to the Luhansk region is not made here by han e: it was the
Donets ore-metallurgi al entre that supplied raw materials | bronze ingots |
fortheL oboikivka metalwork entre. The latter served theneedsnotonly ofthe
populationoftheBerezhnivka-MayivkaSrubnayaCulture,butalsoofneighbouring
ulturesoftheforest-steppezonefromtheDniepertotheVolga[Tatarinov1993℄.

Threebronze auldronson oni albases,remarkablefortheirspe i tulip-like
shape,originatefromtheformerKiev,VollhyniaandPodolyaprovin es.Habitually,
they are referred to the Cymmerian period [Bo hkarev 1972:65: Fig. 2, 3, 4, 8℄.
However, ndsofsimilar auldronsinthesteppezoneare onne tedto omplexes
oftheBerezhnivka-Mayivka-SrubnayaCulture,and ndsin theforest-steppezone
| toreli s oftheSuskantype. Syn hronizationof thoseformationswith reli s of
the Trz inie -Komarov ommunityallows us, with substantial degree of ertainty,
tolinkitwith the ndsofbronzeriveted auldronsfromtheright-bankUkrainian
forest-steppezone.
The material omplex of the Sosnytsa Culture allows lear de nition of its
pla e in the system of Ukraine's ar haeologi al ultures of the Bronze Age (T
a-ble 4). AmongtheL ateBronze Age ultures, the Sosnytsais syn hroni with the
Eastern Trz inie and the Noua Cultures in the West, and the Sabatinovka and
the Berezhnivka-Mayivka Srubnaya Cultures in the South. However, the la k of
datedartifa ts in the losed omplexeshas notallowedso fartobuild an internal
periodi al sequen eoftheSosnytsareli s. Rather,a tualattemptstobuildthe
pe-riodi al lassi ationre e t thetenden iesofthe ulture's developmentwhi hare
stilldiÆ ulttosplitintoseparatephases ina onvin ingway.
The found instan es of onne tion between the Sosnytsa population and its
eastern neighbours were aused, in our view, by the former's need of raw
mate-rialsfortheirfoundryindustryanditsprodu ts.Mostprobably,thesteppepeople
ex hanged raw materials and ready bronzeitems forprodu tsof agri ulture
o e-red by populations of the Sosnytsa and other ultures of the Trz inie -Komarov
ommunity.Thisassumption, rstmade byN.N. Cheredni henko[1986:54℄,isstill
relevant.Notwithstandinga numberofsettlementsingood onditionfoundinthe
area,pra ti allynoex avationsoftheSosnytsasitesintheMiddleDesnabasinhave
