Computer program, Report 96.3.TT.4770, Transport Engineering and Logistics.
The boom of the slewable mounted bridge crane, designed and produced by Machinefabriek Figee, is supported by two bars. The link between the bar and the box type girder of the boom is subjected to considerable forces. It is true that the present link can stand these forces, but it is unclear whether the link is designed optimally.
The stresses in the present construction are calculated using the computer program ANSYS. By changing the characteristic dimensions of the link separately each dimension on the stress in the link is analysed. The link is redesigned and the stresses in the new concept are calculated to verify the conclusions about the ideal shape of the link. The maximum stress in the new link is 114 MPa, so in the required range of 100 and 120 MPa.
The way of modelling the construction in ANSYS is described. The exactness of the results is checked. It appears that a geometrie discontinuity heavily influences the stresses in the neighnourhood of the discontinuity.
