Freestyle skiing

This is one of the amazing extreme winter sports to watch. Freestyle skiers can jump up to 14 meters high in the air. They start from snow ramps which are called kickers, then do some somersaults in the air. The tricks they perform in the air are breathtaking for the spectators.

Such event is called aerials. To be a freestyle skier one must train really hard throughout the year. Practising jumping off trampolines and water ramps is a must to be in good shape. The biggest problem for the skiers is wind, because it influences their speed and therefore can change the shape of their jump.

In 1979 the International Ski Federation (FIS) officially accepted Freestyle as a member of the International Ski Community. In 1986 the first FIS Freestyle World Championships took place in Tinges, France.

Freestyle jumping became an official Olympic sport in 1992, and the aerials in 1994. The judges give points for the style of the take-off, the shape of the jump and the level of difficulty of the tricks the skier performs, and of course for the smooth landing. Freestyle is continually developing. The competitions are more and more interesting because there are no restrictions and the skiers can show now a great variety of manoeuvres, twists, somersaults and inverted jumps during the event.

Speedskiing

Speed skiers must be experts in skiing. It is not for the average person. A speed skier must train a lot. There are special wind tunnels where they train throughout the year to master the right positions. The ice-course is really steep (60º) and it is 3.2 kilometers long. The speed the skier achieves after 10 seconds is more than 240 kph! Any small mistake might end in disaster. Broken arms or legs are common. But the most dangerous injuries are burns. At such high speed it’s easy to catch fire if you slide on your back. That’s why wearing a specially manufactured protective suit is a must. All the equipment for speedskiing must be designed for maximum speed and this includes a special helmet consisting of two shells. In case of a bad fall, the outer shell breaks off and the inner shell provides protection.

1. Freestyle skiing is the most exciting extreme sport to watch. …………..

2. The aerials are the same as somersaults. …………..

3. Wind has a direct influence on the jump. …………..

4. Anyone, if properly trained, can become a speed skier. …………..
