Korea's shipbuilding industry has made enormous strides in a relatively short time and is now well acquainted with most classes of merchant ship. However, the industry there is today breaking new ground: this remarkable illustration shows the country's first double-hull

VLCCs nearing completion at the Daewoo yard for the World-Wide Ship-ping group. Other double-hull

super-tankers are being buiit by Hyundai, which is also constructing the country's first spherical-tank LNG carrier; the first membrane-type gas tanker has been ordered at Hanjin Heavy industries. Our speciai report on Korea begins on page E64.

One of the most important considerations in future manne propuision plants will be the level of exhaust emissions. One ofthe pioneers in the battle to control output of nitrous oxides and other polluting gases is ABB Flakt Marine. Seen here is the company's prototype Nixhaust installation on board the Scandinavian shuttle ferry Aurora af H e l s i n g b o r g ; it Is connected to one of the ship's four Wartsila medium-speed propuision engines and is of the selective cataiytic reduction (SCR) type. A report on this and other companies' approaches to the problem appears in our annual diesel technology analysis which begins on page El 18.

Increasing numbers of large double-bot-tom and double-skin tankers are being built today as environmental pressure grows in the industry. An interesting design from Astilleros Espanoles in Spain is that used for the 124,000dwt Marie K n u t s e n , order-ed by the Norwegian owner Knut Knutsen. This has double bottoms under all cargo tanks except No 3 where there is a com-plete double-skin for water ballast. Sub-sequent ships now being buiit for the same owner have full double-skins. Our special feature on tanker technology begins on page E291.

Special containers such as these, with their associated roller conveyor, form part of the innovative iVIacGregor-Navire stores handiing system on the new Grimaidi pas-senger/vehicle ferry M a j e s t i c , just com-pleted by Nuovi Cantieri Apuania. A fea-ture on this pioneering ship begins on page E268.

Efficient preparation and dispensing of food and dnni<, together with the proper disposal of the extensive waste products generated, are i<ey factors on cruise iiners, ferries and many other ships today. Our speciai feature on these topics, which begins on page E404, examines the iatest

technical advances in these sensitive issues. Typical of the galley and cafeteria systems reviewed is this self-service counter on board the 6,000gt Adriatica ferry Palladio, designed and fabricated by the Italian company Mareno Industriale.
