special container for the palms is placed in the
vestibule. The palms will be burned and the ashes
obtained will be used during Mass on Ash
Wednesday.
Although a spiritual creature, the demon does not understand what is in our mind and in our heart; he can only surmise it through observing our behavior. It is not a complicated operation for him, having an extremely fine intelligence. In a word: from what we read, see, say, and experience, and from the companions we choose, even from our side glances, from all this he can discern where he will tempt us and at which particular moment.
And that is what he does.
The most frequent weak points in man are, from time to time, always the same: pride, money, and lust. And, let us note well, there are no age limits for sinning. Therefore, we must not presume or hope that in an advanced age we shall be exempt from sin. A vice that is cultivated in youth will not lessen in old age without some work and intervention. The will to struggle against sin must be cultivated even to the end of our days.
So, are we in this struggle all alone? Jesus is the prophet foretold by Moses in today’s First Reading. Though He has authority over heaven and earth, He becomes one of our own kinsmen. He comes to rebuke the forces of evil and chaos, not only in the world, but in our lives. He wants to make us holy in body and spirit, as St. Paul says in today’s Second Reading.
Of course we have the Communion of Saints, the Sacraments, the Magisterium and Traditions. But one thought, often left out is the Mystical Body of Christ. It simply means that all those baptized into Christ are connected together in one common life.
The way we treat everyone else is also the way we treat Christ.
Through Baptism, Christians belong to Christ. We have received the Holy Spirit and now share life together “in” Him. Even all unbaptized people are called to the Church and must be shown similar love. The sacrifices we make affect the lives of other people, ones we know and ones we will never meet in this life.
The joys we have may be the fruit of our own good decision making, prayer or they may be a gift won for us by the sacrifice of another brother or sister across the world. That’s why praying for each other is so important. Our prayer life isn’t to just see quick results or only to beg for miracles. We do it also to stay connected and help win grace and strength for each other. The whole image of the Church as a “body” is a gripping sort of analogy for a much greater thing: the reality of a network of grace connecting our lives together!
There are stories after stories of how God connects our lives together through grace. Years back my cousin was working a job in Poland and got into a late-night car accident. He was cut off by a drunk driver at high speed, and hit the median wall. All passengers walked away without injury. The next day our elderly neighbor called my parents to say she’d been woken up in mid- sleep (about an hour before the accident), filled with a strong sense that she had to “pray for one of the Pierzchala boys.” So she did.
What does this mean? Nothing more than that God includes us in the lives of those around us. He could easily save us all alone, but He doesn’t want to. Instead, He wants us to pray for one another, Last week, Jesus announced the kingdom of God is at hand. This
week, in mighty words and deeds, He exercises His dominion. He asserts His Divine authority over Satan and his evil spirits seeking the ruin of souls. “With an unclean spirit” is biblical language for a man possessed by a demon, Satan being the prince of demons. The demons’ question: “What have you to do with us?” is often used in Old Testament scenes of combat and judgment.
God, in His infinite power, created multitudes of angels, an impressive, incalculable number. One day during an exorcism, Father Candido Amantini, a Passionist priest asked a demon: “How many are you?” The demon responded: “We are so many that if we were visible we would obscure the sun.” The demon on that occasion gave information that we have no reason to disbelieve because it is confirmed in Scripture.
A great number of the angels fell because they rebelled against God.
We recall that before admitting the angels to paradise, God subjected them to a trial of obedience and humility, of which we know the nature but not the specifics. The sin of the fallen angels was one of pride and disobedience. Satan, the most beautiful of all the angels, being aware of his extreme intelligence, rebelled at the idea of being subjected to Jesus, the incarnate man and Mary, a mortal, Queen of Angels and Heaven. Lucifer forgot that he was a creature made by God. Many angels followed him in his prideful decision to rebel.
What happened between the angels is narrated in the twelfth chapter of the book of Revelation: there was a great war between the angels who remained faithful to God and those who rebelled against Him — in brief, a war between the angels and the demons. The Bible tells us that Michael the Archangel was at the head of the angels and that Lucifer guided the angels who rebelled (and were defeated).
The result was that “there was no longer any place for them in heaven” (Rev. 12:8). So they prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls like in the Gospel account today.
A passage from the first letter of St. Peter comes to mind: “Brothers and sisters, be sober, be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith” (cf. 1 Pet. 5:8–9). An interpretation of this passage, on which various scholars are agreed, sounds like this: “Brothers and sisters, be vigilant. The devil wanders around each one of you, searching where to devour.” That word where is important: the devil looks in each person precisely for his weak point and “works” on it, creating his next sinful occasion. It will be the targeted person himself, who in his liberty, will commit the sin, after having been well “cooked” by Satan’s temptation.
Can the devil know our thoughts? Is he able to understand what we are thinking at a certain moment in our life? The response is simple:
absolutely not. Theology is agreed on this question. Only God, who is omniscient, who intimately possesses the secrets of created reality, that of men and angels, and that of uncreated reality, which is His own essence, knows in depth the thoughts of each man.
WORLD DAY FOR CONSECRATED LIFE
DZIEŃ ŻYCIA KONSEKROWANEGO
Since 1997, the universal Church has celebrated the World Day for Consecrated Life. On Friday, February 2nd in the Cathedral Basili- ca at 7:30 pm on the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord the Arch- diocese will observe this day with a special emphasis on the call to consecrated life in today’s world. This Feast is also known as Can- dlemas Day; the day, on which candles are blessed symbolizing Christ who is the light of the world. So too, those in consecrated life are called to reflect the light of Jesus Christ to all peoples.
Come join us in joyful prayer! The consecrated life is one way that men and women live out their baptismal commitment as followers of Jesus. Some become members of a religious congregation or a secular institute. Others remain single and make a profession to God through the local bishop and are known as consecrated vir- gins. We recognize and give thanks for those who have consecrat- ed their lives to God and the Church through the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. Cardinal Joseph Tobin invites all the faith- ful to gather in celebration, support and thanksgiving with Even- ing Prayer with the blessing and lighting of candles and honoring the Jubilarians. Come join in the unceasing prayer of the church.
This invitation is extended in a special way to the members of eve- ry parish as a means of supporting and thanking the consecrated men and women of our Archdiocese for their selfless gift of service to our local Church.
On this occasion we express our thanks and gratitude to our Sister Irene for her dedicated service in our parish.
Thank you, Sr. Irene, and God bless you!
W 1997 r. Jan Paweł II właśnie w to święto ustanowił Światowy Dzień Życia Konsekrowanego, stwarzając okazję do głębszej refleksji całego Kościoła nad darem życia poświęconego Bogu.
Matka Najświętsza ofiaruje Panu Bogu największy Dar, jaki otrzymała - Syna, Jezusa Chrystusa, a tym samym składa w ofierze siebie. Podobną ofiarę, z siebie samych w miłości do Chrystusa, składają osoby konsekrowane.
Siostrze Irenie oraz wszystkim osobom życia konsekrowanego składamy najlepsze życzenia.
to build one another up, to help each other grow.
So the Gospel narrative of Jesus commanding the demon, the unclean spirit to come out of the man is not just an account from 2,000 years ago. Mainly due to the creeping atheism, amorality, and lack of belief in hell, evil or even Satan himself, we live in a cultural milieu that is abounding with an overindulgent fascination with the occult, zombies, vampires, witches and black magic.
Let us clearly recognize the permeations of the occult in modern culture and society, though often they are cleverly and sometimes quietly disguised. Let us bring to the forefront what Mother Teresa knew deep in her heart, that in loving the most unlovable in our midst, the hungry, the thirsty, the stranger – we love Christ himself.
Have a blessed and peaceful day!
Fr. Ireneusz
