cereals w as 10 mg. P 20 5/100 g. soil only. In phosph orus m obilization could
h av e b een activ e th e ro o t ex u d a te s and also th e specific rh izo sp h ere
m icro flora of th e alfalfa. In 1948 G e r r e t s e n [2] h a d observed in his
e x p e rim e n ts w ith o ats a n d tu rn ip s th a t b reak d o w n of ph osphorus com
pounds occurs on ly in th e presen ce of m icroorganism s, since no red u ctio n
w as n o ted in ste rlie conditions of p la n t grow th . M y ś к ó w [16] found
in th e rh izo sp h ere of d iffe re n t p lan ts m an y m icroorganism s capable to
tra n s fo rm u n av ailab le pho sp h oru s com pounds into available form s.
T he o b jec t of o u r w ork w as to s tu d y th e “p h o sp h o ru s” m icroflora
p o p u latio n of th e alfalfa rh izo sp h ere in d iffe re n t y ears of p la n t grow th,
and th e changes o ccu rrin g in those populatio ns d u rin g th e v e g etativ e
period.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
O u r stu dies w ere conducted in th e y e a rs I960— 1962 on a lfa lfa fields
cropped for h a y of th e Ex. St. B aborów ko. Yields of alfa lfa tops in I960
w e re 450 q /h a (3 cuttings), in 1961 — 380 q /h a (2 cuttings), in 1962 —
320 q /h a (2 cuttings).

In th e sam ples tre a te d in th a t w ay w ere d e te rm in e d th e to ta l n u m b er
of b a c te ria and strep to m y cetes, th e p e rc e n ta g e of m icroorganism s dissol
ving Ca3 ( P 0 4)2 and of those m in eralizin g nucleic acid o r re q u irin g tra c es
of p ho sp h o ru s only. T he m eth o d described by G o ł ę b i o w s k a [3 ,4 ]
w as used in d e term in atio n .
RESULTS
No appreciab le difference w as noted b etw een th e q u a n tity and q u a lity
of th e m icrobial p o p u latio n in th e alfalfa rh izo sphere and in soil o utsid e
of it (Tab. 1). This m ay be ex p la in ed b y th e exten siv e d evelo pm ent of
th e alfalfa root sy stem over th e w hole area of th e in v estig ated field.
F o r th is reaso n com parison of th e m icro flo ra in an d o utsid e th e rh iz o
sp h e re w as re s tric te d to a few sam ples.
N e ith e r w as fou nd any d istin ct d ifferen ce in com position of th e m i
croflora re la te d to age of th e p la n ts (Tab. 2). M ore m ark e d th o ug h w ere
seasonal v ariatio n s in m icrobial p o p u latio n and in fluence of th e soil type.
M axim um d ev elo pm en t of m icroorganism s in th e v eg etatio n period
w as o bserv ed in sp rin g an d a u tu m n (Tab. 2). In re la tio n w ith th e w e a th er
conditions, peak d ev elo p m en t o c cu rred in th e y e a r 1961 on d iffe re n t
fields in A pril or M ay and again in A u g u st or S eptem ber, w hile in 1962
it was observed in J u n e a n d O ctober. M icrobial ab u n d an ce w as g re a te r
in 1961 th a n in 1962, w hich w as p ro b ab ly due to th e cold sp rin g w e a th e r
of 1962 and to alm ost c o n sta n tly u n fav o u ra b le atm o sp h eric conditions
du rin g th e w hole v e g e ta tio n p erio d of th is year. In 1961 m ore b ac te ria
re q u irin g p h osph o rus traces o n ly an d tho se dissolving calcium p ho sphate
w ere n o ted th an in 1962 (Tab. 3), w h ile in 1962 th e n u m b ers of o rg a n ic -
-p h o sp h o ru s m in e raliz e rs w ere re la tiv e ly g re a te r. T he b a c te ria and
stre p to m y c ete s dissolving calcium p ho sp h ate fo rm ed from 0 to 50%, of
th e e n tire m icrobial population, th e n u m b ers of p h o sp h o ru s-m in eralizers
ran g e d from 0 to 80%,. This w ide v a ria n ce indicates th a t u n d e r fav o u rab le
d evelo p m en tal conditions th e p ho sphorus-m obilizing group of th e m i
crobial p o p u latio n m ay grow to la rg e n u m b ers.
No d ifferen ces in rh izo sp h ere m icro flora could be d iscern ed b etw een
2,3 an d 4 years old alfalfa p lan ts. Soil action w as m ore noticeable th a n
th a t of p la n t age. O n field A, fro m w hich alfalfa roo t sam ples of 2-years
old p la n ts w ere tak e n in 1961, and sam ples of 3-years p la n ts in 1962, th e
m ean ratio of calciu m -p h o sp h ate dissolving to p ho sp h o ru s-m in eralzin g
m icroorganism s w as 10 : 10 in 1961, an d 4 : 10 in 1962. O n field B, th e

DISCUSSION
In alfalfa field c u ltu res th e d ifferences in com position and a c tiv ity of
th e m icro flora of th e rhizo - and n on rh izo sp h ere soil do n o t a p p e ar as
d is tin c tly as in cu ltiv a tio n of o th e r p lan ts w ith less developed root
system s.

observed in th e rh izo sp h ere of oats 70%, of o rg anic-phosp ho ru s m in e ra li
zers, an d on ly 10% outside th e ro o t area. H e l l e r a nd D ą b r o w s k a
[6] o bserved only a 10%, differen ce in p h y tase a c tiv ity b etw e en th e
rh izo sp h ere and n o n rh izosph ere soil of alfalfa, w hile in oats th e d iffe re n
ce am o u n ted to 45% .
T he nu m b ers of m icroorganism s capable of m obilizing ph osphorus in
rh izo sp h ere of p la n ts and in soils v aries w idely according to G o ł ę
b i o w s k a and M y ś k ó w [5], and K o b u s [9, 10]. The rh izo sp h ere
of legum inous p lan ts h a rb o u rs u su a lly larg e n u m b ers of m icroorganism s
active in pho sp h oru s m obilization. In p lo t e x p e rim e n ts M y ś k ó w [14]
n o te d in th e alfalfa rh izo sp h ere ab o u t 65%, of b ac te ria and strep to m y cetes
dissolving d icalcium p h o sp h ate and ab ou t 50% o rg an ic-ph osp horus m i
ne ra liz e rs. In pot ex p e rim e n ts G o ł ę b i o w s k a [4] found in th e rh izo-
-sphere of lu p in e approx. 60%, of b ac te ria and stre p to m y c ete s dissolving
calcium p hosphate, in th e rh izo sp h ere of potato 20% and in th a t of o at
15% only. T he p a rtic u la ry high cap ab ility of m icroorganism s fro m th e
clover rh izo sp h ere in dissolving of p h o sp ho ru s com pounds is p oin ted o u t
b y S o b i e s z c z a ń s k i [18].
In o u r p re s e n t e x p e rim e n ts w ith alfa lfa we found fro m 0 to 55%
org an ism s dissolving Ca3( P 0 4)2 and fro m 0 to 85% m icroorg an ism m in e
ralizin g nucleic acid.
In lab o ra to ry ex p e rim e n ts on sy n th e th ic m edia w as noted th e lib e ra
tio n b y m icroorganism s of m ajo r q u a n titie s of soluble p h osph ates fro m
u n a v a ilab le p hosphorus com pounds ( K o b u s [10]). In soil c u ltu res ho w
ev e r on ly in sig nificant am o u nts of ph osph orus set free by m icroo rg a
n ism s w ere o b served ( D o b r z a ń s k a , G o ł ę b i o w s k a [1]).
Soil ino culation w ith p h o sphorus-m obilizing b acteria y ielded only
poor re su lts in p o t e x p e rim e n ts ( M y ś k ó w [16], S z e m b e r [20], К u-
r y ł o w i c z a nd K e r m e n o w a [11]). T he process of biologic p h o sp h o
ru s m obilization in field conditions has no t y et been a d e q u ate ly studied.
A p o p u latio n of „p h o sp h o ru s” m icro flo ra includes a v a rie ty of m i
croorganism s. In th e gro up of calciu m -phosp hates dissolving m icrobes
M y ś k ó w [15] fo und m ain ly aerobic n o n sp oreform ing rods and s tre p to

m ycetes. L o u w a n d W e b i e у [12, 13] n oted in th e ir investigations
th a t abo ut 55% of th e p h osphorus-dissolving organism s belonged to th e
g en eral C o ryneba cterium , M ycobacterium and Nocardia.
A ccording to I w u s z к i n [7] th e action of strep to m y cetes fro m th e
rhizo sp h ere of legum ious p lan ts in o fte n antagonistic to Rhizobium . A c
cu m u latio n of calciu m -p ho sp hate dissolving strep to m y cetes in th e r h i
zosphere of a lfa lfa m ay th e re fo re neg ativ ely affect sym biosis. B u t th e
action of th e strep to m y cetes is n o t alw ays antagonistic R h iz o b iu m , as
w as observ ed by A. and E. S t r z e l c z y k [19] who fo un d th a t R h izo
bium has only slig h t su sce p tib ility to th e antibiotic action of stre p to m y
cetes, depending on th e n a tu re of th e carbo n and n itro g e n n u trie n ts
source in th e m edium .
CONCLUSIONS
1. The rh izo sp h ere of alfalfa h arb o u rs larg e n u m b ers of m icroo rg a
nism s capable of m obilizing phosph o ru s by red ucin g unav ialab le calcium
p h o sph ate and by m in eralizin g organic phosphorus.
2. On alfalfa fields no q u a in tita tiv e and q u a lita tiv e differences b e tw e en
th e m icro flo ra p o p u latio n in alfalfa rh izo sp h ere and in th e soil itse lf w ere
found (Tab. 1). T h a t indicates to a stro ng action of th e root sy stem o f
alfalfa on th e w hole c u ltiv a te d area.
3. S tro n g v arian ce in q u a n tita tiv e an d q u a lita tiv e com position o f
th e „ph o sp h o ru s” m icro flo ra p o p u latio n w as observed a t d iffe re n t stages
of th e v eg etativ e p erio d (Tabs. 2 and 3|) pointin g to high su scep tib ility of
th ese m icroorganism s to m icroclim atic conditions in th e soil en v iro n
m en t.
4. No in flu en ce of age of alfalfa of n u m b ers of th e „ p h o sp h o ru s”*

B ei einer Prüfung der Böden in der L andw irtschaftlichen V ersuchanstalt B a borówko auf ihren Gehalt an Phosphorsäure w urde unsere A ufm erksam keit auf eine A nhäufung von pflanzenaufnehm barem Phosphor unter Luzerne gelenkt. A ls

eine m ögliche Ursache dieser Erscheinung konnte die Eigenart der für die Rhizos- phäre der Luzerne charakteristischer M ikroflora in Betracht gezogen w erden.
Ziel unserer Arbeit war es daher, die „Phosphorm ikroorganism en” in der Rhizosphäre der Luzerne in verschiedenen Anbaujahren kennen zu lernen.
Die Untersuchungen wurden in Jahren 1960— 1962 auf Luzernefeldern durch geführt. Bodenproben und Luzernewurzeln wurden in der Vegetationsperiode m ehrm als entnom men und die Luzerne im zwieten, dritten und auch vierten A n
baujahr untersucht.
In der Rhizosphäre w ie auch im Boden ausserhalb der Wurzelzone w urden die Gesam tzahlen der Bakterien und Actinom yceten sow ie die ( P 0 4) Gruppen von tertiäres Calcium phosphat-lösenden, N ucleinsäure-m ineralisierenden und m it Spu ren von Phosphorsäure begnügsam en Mikroorganismen bestim mt.
D ie m ikrobiologische U ntersuchungen wurden m ittels einer q uan titativ-q u ali tativen M ethode nach Lochhead durchgeführt, m odifiziert von G ołębiowska zur Untersuchung der die Um w andlung von Phosphorverbindungen im Boden b ew ir kenden M ikroorganismen.
A uf Grund der Teste kann festgestellt werden, dass in der Rhizosphäre' der Luzerne sehr zahlreiche Mikroorganismen vorhanden sind, w elche die Um wandlung von Phosphorverbindungen in pflanzenaufnehm bare Formen vorzunehm en ver mögen.
Sowohl in der Zahl der M ikroorganismen, w ie auch der quantitativen Zusam m ensetzung ihrer Gruppen konnten zwischen der Rhizosphäre der Luzerne und dem Boden ausserhalb der Wurzelzone, keine w esentlichen U nterschieden fe st gestellt werden.
Zu verschiedenen Zeitpunkten der Vegetationsperiode w urden starke Sch w an kungen der quantitativen und qualitativen Zusam mensetzung der „Phosphor m ikroorganism en” beobachtet. Dies mag auf eine besondere S en sitivität dieser Mikroorganismen gegenüber den m ikroklim atischen Bodenbedingungen hinw eisen.
Die Zeitdauer des Luzerneanbaues scheint keinen Einfluss auf Zusam m ensetzung und Zahl der „Phosphorm ikroorganism en” auszuüben.

SUR LA TRANSFORMATION DE PHOSPHORE TELLURIQUE D ANS LA RHIZOSPHÈRE DE LUCERNE
R é s u m é
Pendant l ’étude du contenue de phosphore soluble dans les sols de la Station des Récherches Agronomiques Baborówko, on a remarqué que dans le sol sous culture de lucerne il y a plus de P assim ilable,t que sous les autres cultures sur le m êm e champ.
La fonction m icrobienne dans la rhisosphêre de lucerne peut etre essen tielle à ce phénom ène.
Ce travail a eu pour objet l ’étude des m icroorganism es prenant part dans la transform ation du phosphore en rhizosphere de lucerne pendant divers années de sa cultivation.

Les observations ont été fait pendant les années I960— 1962 sur des planta tions m énagère de lucerne. Les échantillons du sol et des racines ont été prelevés quelquefois durant tout le cycle végétatif des plantes. On a étudué les cultures de lucerne dans la 2-èm e, 3-èm e et 4-èm e année de sa végétation.
D ans des échantillons du sol tém oin p relevé à distance des racines et du sol de la rhizosphere on a exam iné micropopulation totale et des groupem ents des m icroorganism es capables de solubilizer phosphate tricalcique, de m ineralizer acide nucléique et ceu x -ci qui dem andent seulem ent des traces de phosphore pour son developm ent.
L’étude m icrobiologique a été effectu ée par la m éthode de Lochheade destinée à l ’exam en dans le sol des groupes nutritionnels des m icroorganism es. Cette m étho de a été adaptée par G ołębiowska a l’étude de la répartition dans un sol des m i croorganism es capables à transform er des composés phosphoriques.
Le nombre des m icroorganism es et la com position qualitative de leur ensem bles étaient presque identique dans le sol tém oin et dans la rhizosphere de la lucerne.
A certains m om ents de developpm ent des plantes on a indiqué des grandes fluctuations en la com position des ensem bles des m icroorganism es capable a trans form er des différents form es P. Ces observations confirm ent l ’idée que le d evelop pment de cette groupe des m icroorganism es depend de m anière significante selon des facteurs clim atiques trouvées dans le sein du sol.
On n ’a pas observé d’influence de l ’année de la cultivation de la lucerne à la com position des ensem bles des m icroorganism es „phosphoriques”.

Przy badaniu zasobności gleby w fosfor w Rolniczym Zakładzie D ośw iadczal nym Baborówko, zwrócono uwagę na grom adzenie się fosforu przyswajalnego w g le bach pod uprawą lucerny. Przyczyną tego zjaw iska może być m ikroflora sw oista dla rizosfery tej rośliny.
Celem naszej pracy było poznanie zespołów drobnoustrojów „fosforowych” w ri- zosferze lucerny w różnych latach jej uprawy.
Badania prowadzono w latach I960—1962 na gospodarczych plantacjach lu cer ny. Próbki gleby i korzeni lucerny pobierano kilkakrotnie w ciągu sezonu w egeta cyjnego, badając plantacje w II, III i IV roku uprawy tej rośliny.
W glebie ze strefy pozakorzeniowej i z rizosfery oznaczano ogólną ilość bakterii i prom ieniow ców oraz ugrupowanie drobnoustrojów rozpuszczających fosforan trój wapniow y, m ineralizujących kw as nukleinow y i zadow alających się śladam i fo sforu.
Badania m ikrobiologiczne prowadzono za pomocą ilościow o-jakościow ej metody Lochheada, przystosow anej przez Gołębiowską do badania w glebie zespołów drobno u strojów w yw ołujących przem iany zw iązków fosforow ych.
W w yniku przeprowadzonych badań znaleziono, że w rizosferze lucerny bytuje w iele drobnoustrojów zdolnych do urucham iania związków fosforow ych w form ie przyswajalnej dla roślin.

W ilości drobnoustrojów i w jakościowym składzie zespołów m ikroflory z rizo- sfery lucerny i ze strefy pozakorzeniowej nie stwierdzono w yraźnych różnic.
W poszczególnych term inach okresu w egetacyjnego zaobserwowano silne w a hania w ilościow ym i jakościowym składzie zespołu drobnoustrojów „fosforow ych”. Świadczy to o dużej w rażliw ości tych drobnoustrojów na w arunki m ikroklim atycz- ne w glebie.
N ie znaleziono w pływ u czasu uprawy lucerny na skład i liczebność zespołów drobnoustrojów „fosforowych” w jej rizosferze.

У . и П ., Б а б о р у в е к Р е з ю м е И сследуя общий запас подвижной фосф орной кислоты в почвах Сельскохо зяйственной Опытной Станции Баборувко обращено внимание на накопление ф осф ора в доступной для растений форме в почвах под посевами люцерны. Причиной этого явления могла быть микрофлора свойственная ризосф ере этого растения. Целью нашей работы было исследование ф осф орны х микроорганизмов в ри зосф ере люцерны в разные годы ее возделывания. Опыты были проведены в I960—1962 годах на хозяйственных посевах. Образцы почвы и корней люцерны отбирали несколько кратно в течение вегетационного периода с культур 2-го, 3-его и 4-того года пользования. В почве из внекорневой и корнеобитаемой зоны определяли общее коли чество бактерий и актиномицетов, а такж е групповой состав микроорганизмов растворяющих трехкальциевый ф осф ат, минерализующ их нуклеиновую кислоту и приспособленных к развитию при малом содерж ании ф осф ора в среде. Микробиологические определения были проведены количественно-каче ственным методом Локхида, приспособленном Голембиовской для изучения в по чве микроорганизмов вызывающих превращение ф осф орны х соединений. Результаты наших опытов показывают, что в ризосф ере люцерны обитают многие микроорганизмы способные к превращению соединений ф осф ора в до ступные для питания растений формы. В численности микроорганизмов и качественном составе их сообществ в почвах из ризосф еры люцерны и из внекорневой зоны не обнаружено сущ е ственных различий. В отдельных ф а зах вегетационного периода наблюдали большие колебания в количественном и в качественном составе сообществ „ф осф орны х” микро организмов. Это свидетельствует о высокой отзывчивости этих микроорганизмов на ми кроклиматические условия в почве. Не констатировано влияния года пользования на состав и численность со обществ „ф осф орны х” микроорганизмов в ризосф ере люцерны.
