INSTALLATION EUROPEENNE DE RAYONNEMENT SYNCHROTRON
ESRF , Personnel Service - Recruitment BP 220, F-38043 Grenoble Cedex 9, FRANCE
The ESRF is a multinational research institute, situated in Grenoble, France and financed by 19 countries mostly European. It operates a powerful synchrotron X-ray source with some 30 beamlines (instruments) covering a wide range of scientific research in fields such as biology and medicine, chemistry, earth and environmental sciences, materials and surface science, and physics. The ESRF employs about 600 staff and is organized as a French société civile.
Within the Experiments Division, the ESM group is now seeking to recruit a:
Beamline Scientist (m/f) in Chemistry
on the EXAFS beamlines ID24 and BM23
F U N C T I O N
You will play a major role in the running and further development of the ID24/BM23 beamlines, forming the newly commissioned UPBL11 facility, dedicated to Time resolved and Extreme conditions XAS (TEXAS). The beamlines’ mission is to provide state-of-the-art XAS facilities in order to meet the high expectations of the user community. As a beamline scientist, you will be co-responsible for the sustained technical upgrading and development of the instrument. User support will be a key activity which will provide much opportunity for collaborative work at the frontiers of the field. The beamline scientist will be given the opportunity to develop their own research programme in close collaboration with the beamline team, exploiting the unique time–resolved capabilities of the facilities. These cover the timescale from the second to the microsecond in single shot (or kinetics) mode, and down to the 100 ps regime in pump-probe mode. Complementary analysis spectroscopic methods, such as multiwavelength UV-Vis, IR and mass spectrometers, are available in synchronization with XAS.
Q U A L I F I C A T I O N S A N D E X P E R I E N C E
You should hold a PhD and several years of postdoctoral experience in chemistry, physics, or another closely related field. Experience with x-ray absorption, other similar experimental techniques or complementary spectroscopic (IR, UV-Vis, etc..) methods would be desirable. A background in x-ray absorption spectroscopy and in particular EXAFS, would be an asset.
The following qualities are essential:
• good time management skills and ability to prioritize
• ability to interact with staff and facility users at all levels
• ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
