S E V E R A L PAPERS [1-18] have demonstrated the analytical applicability of the Zeeman effect for the purpose of background correction in atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS), utilizing a variety of different systems. M o d u l a t e d magnetic fields have been used [1-2] as well as constant fields i n conjunction with rotating polarizers [3-18]. Magnetic fields have been directed parallel [1-2] or perpendicular [3-18] to the optical axis of observa-tion. And, finally, the magnetic field has been applied either to the primary source of radiation [3-5, 10-18] or to the absorbing atomic vapour, which in turn can be produced by a flame [1-2] or by an electrothermal atomizer [6-9].
The normal method of background correction with a continuous source of radiation is correct only in the case that background absorption is continuous. W h e n rotational lines of a molecular spectrum are present within the spectral bandpass of the optical system [19, 20], systematic errors are introduced.

M o s t papers have stressed the possibilities of the Zeeman effect i n correcting for back-ground absorption by comparing the signals with and without the applied magnetic field. Some publications have formulated approximate expressions [15-18] that are valid under special conditions.
However, if we wish to explore the fundamental possibilities a n d limitations o f the Zeeman effect and want to compare different optical and magnetic systems, a more general theory is clearly required. Such an analysis is the object of the present study, which is directed at two goals. First, the Zeeman effect w i l l be explored for its possibilities i n correcting for continuous or for wavelength dependent background absorption. And, second, it will be explored for its possibility to construct a non-dispersive single-element atomic absorption spectrometer.
Here, the integration extends over the spectral bandwidth, w, of the optical system, is the intensity o f the primary source radiation, Is is the blackbody radiation at the atomizer temperature and k(X) is the absorption coefficient of the atomizer which is proportional to the optical path length and to the number density of absorbing atoms
(nA). T h e first term o n the right hand side of equation (1) describes the absorption process,
whereas the second term expresses the (thermal) radiation from the flame or the electro-thermal atomizing device (called the atomizer).
In general, both I°(X) and k(l) consist of a multitude of transitions, due to fine and hyperfine structure, each with its o w n wavelength dependence. Moreover, I°(X) a n d cer-tainly k(X) may contain contributions not only of the element to be determined, but also of other components i n the source and i n the absorbing vapour. Consequently, i n its general form equation (1) is only amenable to computer calculations. F o r the purpose of this paper some drastic simplifications are required, that should not impair the generality of our conclusions, but are intended to focus our attention more sharply on the particular properties of the Zeeman effect. In other words, the approximations will allow us to ignore all distorting details that are c o m m o n to ordinary A A S systems, but shall expose the effects that are essential to systems using the Zeeman effect. This is achieved by formulating the following conditions.
(a) The optical system will have facilities to correct for atomizer radiation, just as ordinary single beam o r double beam A A spectrometers, i.e. by taking a reading with the primary source blocked. This w i l l allow us to ignore the second term in equation (1). (b) The spectral bandwidth, w, is assumed to be wide enough to transmit all relevant radiation undistorted, even under high magnetic fields.
(c) Hyperfine structure and absorber line shift w i l l be ignored. These effects are known to cause reduced sensitivity and non-linearity o f the analytical curve i n A A S , but this effect is not typical for Zeeman systems. T h i s assumption allows us to consider each source line as an infinitely narrow single transition i n the field free case.
(d) W i t h i n the spectral bandpass of the optical system there will be only one line that is capable of being absorbed by the analyte. A l l other lines may be absorbed or scattered by the matrix but not by the analyte. The total absorption coefficient at each wave-length is made up of two contributions: one from the analyte, acting o n a single-source line only, the other due to the background, which may be wavelength dependent.
(e) The analyte-source line a n d the analyte absorption profile are considered to be symmetrical. If a weak magnetic field is applied to the source of radiation, either parallel or perpendicular to the optical axis, the a-components of the split source line w i l l then be equally absorbed by the absorbing atoms. Conversely, if a weak field is applied to
