PROPOSITIONS

accompanying the dissertation

LEVEL OF DETAIL IN 3D CITY MODELS

by Filip Biljecki

0. The level of detail (LOD) of a 3D city model is one of its foremost characteristics. (This thesis.)

1. The term LOD should not be misapprehended as quality according to its ISO 19157 definition. A fine LOD does not guarantee high quality, nor does the latter warrant the former. (This thesis.)

2. There is no such thing as a general purpose 3D city model. (This thesis.)

3. A catch-22 of international GIS standards: software support is accelerated by the adoption of a standard, while the adoption of a standard is catalysed by its software support.

4. In most developed countries 3D building models will be acquired and maintained automatically and instantaneously from generalised BIM data, which will be man-dated by local governments upon design, construction, renovation, and demolition. 5. Patenting, paywalling, and embargoing publicly funded research is a moral crime

against taxpayers.

6. There is no better example of capitalism and free market than the sharing economy: voluntary transactions and economic exchange between people based on private ownership, largely free of government interference, and benefiting the parties in-volved.

7. Excessively personalised content hurts society. It divides, diminishes social dis-course, aggravates confirmation bias, and directs people towards comfort zones de-void of opposing views.

8. It cannot be a coincidence that ‘h-index’ is pronounced eerily alike as ‘age-index’. 9. Academic evaluations should value efficiency, rather than productivity.

These propositions are regarded as opposable and defendable, and have been approved as such by the promotor prof. dr. J.E. Stoter and the copromotor dr. H. Ledoux.
