SUMMARY

. The North-Sudetic Depression is one ,of the main tectonic uItiits of the \WStern Sudety Mts. [ts orIgm was related Ito .the Variscan tectonic epoch, during which u!pper Carbonifoerous basin was formed in ·its southern part. Acid and mafic igneous intruSIOns took place in the LO\'lller Permian. Saalian Itecitoruc phase

,Was marked by erosiOn of some parlts ot the

resul-'ted in formaition of two deforma1ll.on' systems,

WNW--ESE and NE~SW, as well as in different degree ero-sion of a sedimentary cover, which is evidenced by t112 fact 'that Cretaceous rocks a;re overlying /the SIt'rIa-ta differing in age from the Keuper to the early Pa-leozOdc. The present Sltrudture of the North-Sud'eltJc IDepress.iQll was f{)rmed in ItheTertiall'Y.

The lowermost Strudtural surface is represented by the surface of the base of sedimmtary seriJes. This

surface

descends down to 2,0000 m below sea le-vel \to form flat "botltom" (Slee Fig. 8). A sttep a.bove the flat surface. aW; the deplth of 2,500 m below l;ea level. is inferred in !the western part of the depres-sion.

The Ilowermost structural horizon. c{)mprises . depo_ 9i.ts of the earliest westphalian, Stephanian and ear-ly P.ermiian age (1st cycle). l1t is developed in the southern part of the depression. extending northward up to the Jer.z;m!alnice fault and aitltaining CIaI. 400 m

in thickness. The horizon of the Lower Rotliegende:; HInd cycle) is discordantly overlyling Ithe stra.ta of the 1st cycle and it also ovenpasses maximal extent of tbie lat1ler horizon. The UncI cycle also comprlises igneoUS rocks and varies from 1310 to 350 m in :thick-ness.

The strata. of IthIe Upper Rotliegendes horicron are overlying the eroded surface of, the IInd cyclle sedi-rneIlltary and igneous rocks and the metamorphJic substrata. Its thickness rises from 200 to 520 m north-wards, which suggests that its sedimentary basin en-tered !the Foore-Sudetic block. Close to Ithe end of the tectonic movements. deposits of the Rotliegendes we-re thrown down to the depth of 1,300 m below sea level in the eastern part and to 1,800 m below sea 1:evel in 'the wesfle:rn part of the depression (Fig. 9).

Zechstein horizon is represented over the eIlltire a'l'ea of <the deuress.ion. Littoral aoo open mar.i.ne fa-cies may be distinguished. Zechstein strata are the :thickeSlt in NW part of the depression (260 m thick), wede:inl! out towards the south and 3Outh-east. Bunt-Slandstein horizon is 'entlr!ely de~oned in sand facies Rnd is chiall'aCiterized by ralther uniform thickness (oV'er 500 in) ,over the whole area of the depression,

which indic2ttes Ithat neither smaller unlits nor teqto-nic blocks have marked themselves during its depo-sitfi.on.

At present, RM.-Muschelkalk hOl'J;zon is recorded in the northern !part of tbe depression, in the south up to th:e Jerzmanice faWit. In (turn, Upper Creta-ceous horfizon is found on the entire area, !and may be divided into off-shorn (sandy) and open-marine (marIy) zones. In that horizon, a synsedimentary trough formed in Ith'e southern part of !the depres-sion, whJere CreJtaCleous rocks a1'le ,over 1,1100 m Ithick; outside that trough, Cretaceous rocks are much Ithin-ner, attaining ca. 600 - 700 m in thickness.
