(Pl. I— VI i 4 fig.)
A b s t r a c t : The p resen t paper gives th e first description of tectonic lineation p a ra llel to fold axes from th e area of th e Polish O uter C arpathians. The lineation is defined by th e intersection of bedding planes and surfaces of bedding fissility w ith slip-surfaces of step m icro-faults. The origin of the m icro-faults and, conse
quently, th e lineation is connected w ith sh ear failure of buckled sandstone layers.
STEP-LIK E LINEATION
In several outcrops of folded but unm etam orphosed M agura flysch deposits (mainly of Paleogene age — see Bieda, Jednorow ska, K siążkie- wicz, 1967) of the Babia Góra region, sets of linear structures are obser
vable on the surfaces of sandstone layers. Sometimes, on slightly w eath
ered bedding surfaces, they resem ble crenu'lation lineation know n from m etam orphic terrains, in other cases — sm all asym m etric ripples (Pl. I, II, III and IV).
The presence of these sets of structures sim ultaneously on the upper and low er surfaces of layers, as well as on the surfaces of bedding fissility (Pl. II Fig. 2) suggests .their tectonic origin. This supposition has been confirmed by parallelism of these stru ctu res to axes of mesoscopic folds (Fig. 1) and by observations made on polished sections of hand specimens (Figs. 2, 3 and 4; Pl. V Fig. 2; Pl. VI).
The discussed linear structures, being penetrative w ith Tegard to su r
rounding rock m edium (sensu T urner, Weiss, 1963, pp. 21—22), m ay be term ed lineation (Ibid., pp. 31, 101). The latte r has most often been

observed in thick- an d m edium -bedded sandstones of th e Magura beds as well as in m edium -bedded sandstones of th e Hieroglyphic and Łącko beds. It seems th a t the increase in thickness of sandstone layers is a fac
tor favourable for producing the lineation. A nother prerequisite is the neighbourhood of a fold hinge and the curvature of layers connected w ith it. In the case of the thin-bedded Beloveza and Hieroglyphic beds, the discussed lineation m ay also be present in m arly shales (Pl. I ll fig. 2).
Analogous structures have also been observed in the M agura unit east of the investigated area (the D unajec R iver Valley in the vicinity of Tylmanowa; PI. III fig. 1; Pl. IV; A. K. Tokarski, personal com m uni
cation).
It is here proposed to term the described stru ctu re the step-like li
neation.
DESCRIPTION
Out lineation has th e shape of more or less parallel, rectilinear or som ewhat curved sets of steps, which are from a fraction of a m illim e
tre to about one centim etre high. Succesive steps are a few m illim etres to some centim etres ap a rt (when m easured along the bedding plane p er
pendicularly to the structures). Sometimes, steps of two orders of m agni
tude appear: the sm aller ones are parallelly superim posed on the larger ones (Pl. II Fig. 1).
In some cases, the step-like lineation is associated w ith slickenside striae on the fdssility surfaces parallel to bedding. The striae are th en p er
pendicular to th e lineation (Pl. II Fig. 1; PI. Ill Fi;g. 1) and are probably caused by bedding — and fissility-slip phenom ena during folding (Pl. V Fig. 2).

Investigations of the lineation in n a tu ra l exposures and on polished sections proved th at the sets of parallel steps had been produced w ithin a layer as a result of slip-m ovem ents along sets of step-m icro-faults (the term ,,m icro-fault” is here used after Hills, 1963, p. 25, although, on the ground of their size, the m inor faults under consideration obviously m ust be classed as mesoscopic structures) and/or, less often, m icro-flexures (Figs. 2, 3 and 4; Pl. V Fig. 2; Pl. VI). The m icro-faults usually do not exceed the boundaries of individual sandstone layers, being compensated by ductile deform ation w ithin adjoining shales. The slip-planes most often intersect w ith th e bedding plane at an angle of 60°—80°; sometimes th e angle increases up to 90° or may be som ew hat less than 60°. The m icro- -dislocations (faults and flexures) are, as a rule, norm al ones (Figs. 2 and

4), seldom they are reverse (some of the faults on Fig. 4; Pl. V Fig. 2).
Norm al m icro-faults in one p a rt and reverse ones in the other p art of the layer have also been observed (Fig. 3). One can often see oojugate sets of m icro-faults (Fig. 4; Pl. V Fig. 2; Pl. VI) but usually one of these sets is prédom inât in producing the step-like lineation. Subtile sets of m icro-faults are often hardly perceptible or even invisible on polished sections .in the case when lam ination is lacking. When the step-like linea
tion is well developed, slickenaide striae on the surfaces of m icro-faults, running usually perpendicularly to the lineation, m ay sometimes be observed. The planes of m icro-faults are only seldom covered w ith oal-
cite (Fig. 2).
ORIGIN
In the light of the above data, the step-like lineation is a tectonic lineation defined by intersection of a bedding surface and/or internal fissility planes parallel to it w ith slip surfaces of micro-dislocations. The form ation >of sets of m icro-dislocations is most probably connected w ith the folding process, as is shown by th eir regular orientation w ith respect to fold axes. The developm ent of conjugate sets of inon-kathetal dislo
cations 1 can be explained by the process of shear failure of th e layers being folded by buckling, a fte r exceeding th e ir ability for elastic flow (Jarosżewski, 1974, p. 226, Fłiig. 248). In such a case, the norm al or re verse ch aracter of dislocations would depend m ainly on th e ir position w ithin the folded layer (on the in n er or outer side of the n eu tral surfa-
1 K ath etal dislocation — dislocation perpendicular to bedding planes.
ce; cf. Fig. 3). As m ay be inferred from the above consideration, the presence of sets of shear planes in a cross section of the layer is the necessary criterion to identify t h e , step-like Lineation. If only a bedding surface is accessible fo r inspection, the step-like lineation m ay be con
fused w ith other structures, which sometimes have sim ilar appearance (small ripple-m arks, step-like breaks ru nning across slickensides, in te r
section traces of cross-bedding on bounding surfaces of layers or, cre- nulation lineation, although the la tte r is absent in the Babia Góra re gion).
It should be also m entioned th at dip-slip m ovem ents synchronous w ith folding occurred n o t only along th e surfaces of m icro-dislocations in question b u t also along the joint planes: the pre-existing ones o r pro
duced sim ultaneously w ith folding (see Książkiewicz, 1968; Tokarski, 1975). The re su lta n t steps on bedding surfaces may also be m ore or less parallel to fold axes b u t differ considerably from the step-like liineation in th e ir scale and morphology (El. V Fig. 1). Such steps should not be confused w ith the step-like liineation as well.
Folds in the sandstone layers of the investigated area, 'characterized by concentric geom etry (at least on the msoscopis scale) and—most often — by approxim ately monoclinic sym m etry, w ere form ed by buckling. It may be inferred th a t these folds were produced by a m e
chanism close to flexural-slip folding (slip-m ovem ents p arallel to bed
ding are possible w ithin th e sandstone beds due to the developm ent of bedding fissility — Pl. V Fig. 2) w ith a component of flow added in the case of shaly mem bers of the flysch sequence (where departures from constant thickness and concentric geom etry of folded layers m ay be noticed). Based on the sym m etry of observed folds and the deduced fol
ding mechanism (see T urner, Weiss, 1963, pp. 400, 478), a parallelism may be assumed betw een the direction of step-like lineation (parallel, in turn, to fold axes) and the b kinem atic axis. This ru le should be treated w ith caution and applied only on a local scale. This lim itation, w hich also concerns the assum ed monoclinic sym m etry of folds, is due to stron
gly m arked noncylindrieity of fold structures in the area investigated.
COMPARISONS
Analogous lineations were sometimes described as pseudo-ripple-m arks.
Ingerson (1940) gave exam ples of pseudo-rip pie-m arks from m etam or- phic W eisner quartzite of the Southern Appalachians. They appear along shear-zones intersecting at a high angle w ith the bedding surface. The p etro -stru ctu ral analysis shows th a t the m uscovite flakes are arranged parallel to tlhe shear-zones in th e quartzite and th a t the orientation of quartz optical axes, when plotted on th e stereo-net, makes a pole girdle perpendicular to the shear-planes and another, non-cantm uous girdle, the
axis of which is parallel to th e pseudo-ripple-m arks. These features show, according to Ingerson, th a t the pseudo-ripple-m arks are perpendicular to the Ь kinem atic axis and parallel to th e a^axis.
„Tectonic ripples” on bedding surfaces of greywackes (the A beryst
w yth Grits) are known from Wales. They are parrallel to axes of m inor folds and w ere in terp reted by Price (in Wood, 1958, p. 28, PI. 1) as shear stru ctu res related to drag folds.
Hills (1963, p. 25) described pseudo-ripple-mariks from O rdovician san
d y slates of the S outh-E astern A ustralia and interpreted them as a result of slip-m ovem ents along cleavage planes.
FINAL REMARKS
The step-like lineation here described has not been know n from th e area of th e Polish 'Outer Carpathians so far. Due to its ra th e r infrequent occurrence (at least in the investigated region), its geological significance should not be overestim ated. Being parallel to fold axes, the lineation m ay be helpful — if caution dn the in terp retatio n is being kept in m ind — in determ ining of their local orientation. Being synchronous w ith folding, it m ay also help to prove th e pre- or post-folding ages of various mesoscopic structures.

STRESZCZENIE
W niektórych odsłonięciach fliszu m agurskiego w (rejonie Babiej Góry na powierzchniach ławic piaskowców można napotkać zespoły stru k tu r Unijnych, przypom inające czasem gufraź ibądź drobne riplem arki (pi. I. II;
pi. Ill fig. 1; pl. IV).
ległych do nich wewnątrzławicowych pow ierzchniach oddzielności (pl. II fig. 2), równoległość ich do osi fałdów mezoskopowych (fig. 1) oraz re zultaty badań nad powierzchnią zgładów (fig. 2, 3, 4; pl. V fig. 2; pl. VI).
kową obserwowano w w arstw ach m agurskich, łąckich i hieroglifowych.
W cienkoławicowych w arstw ach 'beloweskich notowano jej obecność w łupkach m arglistyćh (pl. III fig. 2). Podobne stru k tu ry napotkał A. K. Tokarski (inf. ustna; pl. III fig. 1; pl. IV) również w dolinie Du
najca.
Opisywana lineacja ma wygląd równoległych, schodkowo ułożonych stopni o w ym iarach (wysokość, odstępy) rzędu 0,1—10 mm. Zespoły rów noległych stopni w ytw orzyły się w skutek poprzesuwania względem siebie poszczególnych fragm entów ławicy wzdłuż zespołów schodowych m ikro- uskoków (term inu „m ikrouskoki” użyto tu za Hillsem, 1963, s. 25, cho
ciaż rozważane tu drobne uskoki mieszczą się jeszcze w zakresie skali mezo-) rzadziej mikrofleksuirek (fig. 2, 3, 4; pl. V fig. 2; pl. VI). N aj
częściej obserw uje się obecność sprzężonych zespołów m ikrodyslokaсji (fig. 4; pl. V fig. 2; pl. VI) z przew agą jednego z tych zespołów w tw o
rzeniu lineacji schodkowej.
Opisywaną stru k tu rę uznać należy za lineację z przecięcia powierzch
ni oddzielności, równoległych do uławicenia, z powierzchniam i ślizgowy
mi mikrodyslokacji. Powstanie lineacji schodkowej można odnieść do pro
cesu fałdowania i wyjaśnić ścięciowym zniszczeniem ławicy fałdow anej przez zginanie po przekroczeniu zdolności m ateriału do płynięcia sprę
żystego (Jaroszewski, 1974, s. 226, ryc. 248).
w acji dokonanych jedynie na powierzchni uławicenia, pomylić lineację schodkową z innym i strukturam i, niekiedy przypom inającym i ją w yglą
V fig. 2), z ew entualnym udziałem pły
nięcia w obrębie w kładek hipkowydh i na jednoskośną sym etrię pow sta
łych fałdów (założenie to można przyjąć dla niewielkiego pola obserwacji), można utożsamiać kierunek lineacji schodkowej z lokalnym kierunkiem kinem atycznej osi b (T urner, Weiss, 1963, s. 400, 478).
Podobne lineacje opisywano kilkakrotnie jako pseudoriplem arki (In
gerson, 1940; Wood, 1958; s. 28, pl. 1; Hills, 1963, s. 25).
