H e n r y k B a r y c z in A n U n k n o w n D ia ry of J o u rn e y to Ita ly from

th e E nd of the 16th C e n tu r y d iscusses an anonym ous diary of a jou rn ey to

Italy, d iscovered in th e M SS collection of th e K órnik Library, and com es to th e conclusion th at it m ust have b een w ritten in th e period 1595— 1600. S in ce th e an alysis of th e MS reveals its strik ing sim ila rity to and con n ec­ tion w ith an anonym ous diary of a jou rn ey to Italy, Spain and Portugal, p ub lished by Czubek in 1925., Barycz concludes th at th e tw o diaries w ere w ritten b y th e sam e person, characterized by rem arkable in tellectu a l culture. D etailed a n alysis sh ow s th at S ta n isław N iegoszew sk i, Jr, a cousin of th e fam ous im provisatore, m igh t have b een th e author.

The issu e includ es a paper prepared by th e late J ó z e f a O r a ń s k a on D ra w in g s b y Jan P io tr N orblin in the K ó rn ik L ib r a r y Collections. This is a fa irly big collection of N orblin ’s draw ings, one of th e m ore interesting in this country. Id en tified on ly recen tly, th ey w ere unknow n to B atow ski, th e author of a m onograph about J. P. N orblin. T hey com e from th e D ziałyń sk i C ollection, and consist of sev eral groups: sm all sk etches of typ ical figures, architectu ral m onum ents, gen re scenes, P olish provincial diets, and draw ings referring to contem porary h istorical even ts. Apart from the originals th e collection includ es volu a b le copies of w orks w hich have su b seq u en tly b een lost and are not m en tion ed in th e literatu re of th e subject. The K órnik collection of J. P. N orblin ’s d raw ings is a very good rep resen tative sam ple of his d raw ings in gen eral and sh ow s that his d raw ings reflected not on ly his artistic v ie w s but his social and p olitical opinions as w ell. C on seq uently it is a docum ent of his co-op era­ tion through art w ith th e p rogressive cam p in Poland.

C ollection at Kórnik. The valu e of th e collection (fiv e volu m es containing his letters from th e years 1840— 1948 and variou s papers from th e period 1840— 1891) con sists in th e fact that th ese are th e o n ly docum ents pertaining to th e notorious G erm anization cam paign in M asuria in th e 40’s of th e 19th century.

b y Ju liu sz Słow acki. B asing h erself on the n otes of N ied źw ieck i, w h ich

prove th e ex iste n c e of Part I of th e poem and its p olem ic character as early as F ebruary 1840, and on th e data supplied by th e first fiv e S ongs and letters of G oszczyński, th e author con clu des th at th e first Songs of the poem w ere w ritten in the autum n of 1839 as volu m e I of th e planned w h ole. In 1840 th e p oet fix ed th e te x t of th e first fiv e S ongs and w rote the fo llo w in g ones. A fter the appearance of th e article The Im p ro visa to ri in th e b eginn in g of 1841 th e last S ongs of Part I w ere su dd en ly revised and im m ed ia tely sen t to press. D uring 1841 S łow ack i prepared for press Part II, i. e. S ongs VI— X. In th e b eginn in g o f 1842 h e changed his plan and added to S ongs VII and VIII th e insertion s w hich are k now n as Songs VIIB and VII1B. A s fo llo w s from S low a ck i’s notes, th e story of A niela, B ranecki and H elen k a’s death, i. e. th e Song so far m arked as X IV, is th e d irect con tin uation of Part II, and thus it sh ould be m arked as XI. The Song so far m arked as X I should be m arked XII, Song XII should fo llo w as XIII and should include W ernyhora’s story about G ruszczyński. S ong XIII should con seq u en tly be m arked XIV.

b y Ju liu sz S łow acki. The exta n t translation of M acbeth by S łow ack i (A ct I.

S cen es 1— 3) has so far been dated 1846 because of its position am ong th e autographs (K ró l D uch and th e fin al version of Beniowski). From a note by Leonard N ied źw ieck i of February 9, 1840, w e know that S łow ack i translated th e beginning of M acbeth in 1840. T he author proves th at th ere w as no translation of M acbeth by S łow ack i ex c ep t th at of 1840, and she id en tifies th e ex ta n t translation so far dated 1846, w ith that m ade in 1840.

S t a n i s ł a w a J a s i ń s k a is also th e author of the con trib u ­ tion The Origin of J. S to w a c k i’s Poem. „On the R etu rn of N a poleon ’s

A sh e s“ . She sh ow s from th e n otes m ade by N ied źw ieck i that th e poet

drew inspiration from th e fam ous sp eech d elivered by L am artine in the French P arliam ent on May 26, 1840, in connection w ith th e G overn m en t’s in ten tion to bring th e ashes of N apoleon to France, and p roves the relationship b etw een S łow a ck i’s poem and th e speech said by Lam artine.

The author’s aim is to establish th e date of a fire in Bochnia salt m ines; on the stren gth of the docum ents at h is disposal he com es to th e conclusion that class stru ggle in Bochnia assum ed v io len t form s, including th e settin g of m in es afire, eith er b etw een 1406 and 1415 or b etw een 1398 and 1402.

E d m u n d M a j k o w s k i d iscusses Dlugossiana in the M S S S ection

of the K ó rn ik L ib r a r y and g iv es a d etailed bibliographic description of

10 M SS (11 volum es), g en erally preserved in a good condition. T hese M SS w ere acquired for the K órnik collection s from various ow n ers by T ytus D ziałyń sk i in the first h alf of th e 19th century. S pecial attention is draw n to th e so far u nknow n MS of D lu g o sz’s H is to ry of Poland (Vols. 2 and 3) in th e so -called S ie r a k o w s k i C o d e x (registered as BK 197 and 198 II, 71 and 72). The item BK 1641 is also of considerable im portance since it includ es th e first page of the original MS of B anderia by D ługosz.

The literary bequest of H osius includ es also a num ber of poem s. The issue contains an article prepared by th e late S t a n i s ł a w B o d n i a k and H e n r y k B a r y c z under the title A P o em Hosius of 1528. T his is о dedication poem preced in g th e S ta tu ta Vilnensis Dioecesis, printed in 1528. It has been unknow n so far. its on ly ex ta n t copy is p reserved in th e Kórnik Library.

J a n i n a K o z l o w s k a - S t u d n i c k a contributes a paper on The

Z a re m b a A r c h iv e s in the K ó rn ik L ib ra r y , in w h ich she describes in detail

a collection of M SS le ft by Józef Zaremba, th e leader of th e Bar Con­ federacy in th e W ielkopolska region. The collection, purchased for the L ibrary in 1868, w as scien tific a lly exam in ed on ly after 1950. An inventory, various ind exes, lists of special su b jects and referen ces w ere m ade. The archives cover th e period from th e 15th century to about 1825, and are registered in th e Library under Nos. 2051— 2150. The paper g iv es in d etail th e con tents registered, chronologically, under each num ber.

J a n i n a K o z l o w s k a - S t u d n i c k a , w hen w orking on th e Za­ rem ba A rch ives in the K órnik Library, has established close contacts b etw een Jędrzej K itow icz and th e leaders of the Bar C onfederacy. The results of her research are giv en in th e paper Records of J ę d r ze j K i t o ­

w i c z in the A r c h iv e s of th e Bar C onfederacy, 1770— 1771. K itow icz w as

a secretary of Józef Zarem ba. The author describes the docum ents and brings togeth er th e dates w hich m ay help to ex p lain K itow icz’s sudden decision to becom e a priest.

in W ilno. The sam e letter also contains valu ab le inform ation about tw o poets, R ajm und K orsak and S tan isław Starzyński. The author sh ow s that th e letter m u st h ave b een addressed to Julian Sabiński, a cousin and friend of Korsak and Starzyński.

M i c h a ł W i t k o w s k i w rites about The F orgotten D isco v erer of

„G n iezn o S e r m o n s “. The G n iezn o S erm o n s w ere first p ub lished by T ytu s

D ziałyń sk i in 1857. R esearch w as concentrated on th e con tents of that codex, and its discoverer, w h o found th e S er m o n s in a heap of old books and M SS in th e Library of th e G niezno Chapter, w as p ractically forgotten. H e w as Bishop W ojciech A n zelm B rodziszew ski, Suffragan of Gniezno, a b ib liop h ile and librarian of th e Chapter Library. The author discusses B rod ziszew ski’s w ork as librarian and his* letter to T ytus D ziałyński, accom panying th e MS. This letter is a good illu stration of how th e discoverer evalu ated th e MS, an im portant docum ent in th e history of th e P o lish language.

The first part of the paper by A d a m S k a l k o w s k i , Ju liu sz Enoch

and His W ritin g s on Polish-Russian Relations in 1861— 1864, w as publised, w ith a com p reh en sive introduction, in № 4 of The Journal

of the K ó r n i k L ib ra ry. The p resent issu e contains m ore selected w ritin g s

of Enoch on P olish -R u ssian relations in 1863— 1864. Enoch w as in favour of a broad autonom y of the K ingdom of Poland and a fu ll d evelop m en t of the P olish p eop le w ith in that autonom y.

T he L ib r a r y N e w s section g iv es th e ch ronology of th e m ost im portant ev en ts in th e K órnik Library in 1947— 1954, and discusses various kinds of sp ecial work, such as m aking th e in d exes of Library in v en to ries and registers, w ork on th e in ven tory of the num ism atic section, and con ser­ vation of th e foundations of th e castle w h ich houses th e Library.

M i c h a ł W i t k o w s k i in Researches of Old Prints fro m W i e l­

k opolska w rites about th e n ew in itia tiv e of W ielkopolska libraries to

register all th e p rints turned out by th e presses in W ielkopolska in th e 16th— 18th centuries. T he article ou tlines this la rge-sca le endeavour w h ich is to g iv e as a result a centralized catalogu e of old p rints from W ielkopolska and valu ab le m aterial for bibliographical stu d ies in that region. T he w ark w ou ld be carried out in con form ity w ith th e most u p -to-d ate bibliographic m ethods.

In an O bituary N ote d evoted to Józef Grycz, a form er D irector of the K órnik Library, W ł a d y s ł a w P o c i e c h a brings d etailed infor­ m ation about the life and w ork of Józef Grycz and his services to P olish libraries and b ib liology.
