the 2nd millenium BC. For over half a entury a dis ussion has been going on

overthetaxonomi identi ation( hronologi alandspatial)andgeneti andethni

interpretationofthis ulturalunit.

In thedebate, the1980'sand 1990'smark a signi ant ognitive turn aused

bythegrowthofthe orpusofsour es,theuseofsystemati methodsforthestudy

ofmobilesour esandtheproliferationofregional 14

Cdatings.

The present volume of "Balti -Ponti Studies" is an attempt to register this

breakthrough and a proposal fora new ttingof the Trz inie phenomenoninto

thesynthesisofEarly BronzeAge Europe.The re ordsin lude rudimentsofnew

regional systematizations,foundationsof their hronologiesbased onradio arbon

datings and a dis ussion of theme hanisms of so io- ultural hanges whi h gave

risetotheTrz inie ulturalarea andlater ontributedtoitsdisintegration.

Along-term intentionofthisvolumegiving a multifa etedview ofthee e ts

of thesaid ognitive breakthroughis to en ourage a areful s rutinyof the

deve-lopmentme hanisms oftheEuropeanEarlyBronzeAge Civilization,in parti ular

theroleplayedin thembytheso ieties inhabitingthedrainages oftheBalti and

The paper overs an area lo ated between the Vistula and Nida Rivers and

therangeof JuraKrakowsko-Czsto howska.Being anundulating ountry

predo-minantly overedwithloessdeposits,thearea isratheruniformintermsofnatural

onditions.Aspe i natureof ertainphenomenatakingpla e inthearea inthe

times of theTrz inie Culture (TC)was a reason for identifyingthere a separate

group of the said ulture [Blajer 1987:31, map 5℄. In this zone of theTC range,

settlement limits are mostly natural. The ompa t range of TC nds doesnot

si-gni antly rosstheDªubnia andVistula. Avisibles ar ity ofsettlementpointsis

observablein thenorth-westernportionofthearea. Nobarrierwasformedbythe

Nidaonly| tothenorth-eastofita relativelydense TCsettlementnetworkisin

pla e (Fig.1).

Inthearea,theTCisanalienelement,itappearsina nal, lassi formandis

notgeneti allyrelatedtotheolderMierzanowi eCulture.Thispremise,formulated

inthe1970's[Kempisty1978:413℄,hasnotlostanythingofitsvalidityand ontinues

to be used with only slight modi ations [Górski, Kadrow1996℄. The oldest TC

materials, whi h o urred in thefringes of the area, ome from the emetery in

›ernikiGórne. Onthebasisof radio arbon datingand bronzeartifa ts [twowire

ringsofreturn oil|Noppenringe℄,thefoundingofthe emeteryshouldbedated

to the rstpart ofphaseA2 of theBronzeAge ( a 1900-1800 al BC) [Kempisty

1978:Fig.256:16,20;Kempisty,Wªodar zak1996:132,Tab.5℄.Itisimportanttonote

thatat›ernikiGórne,theTCfollowsthe lassi phaseoftheMierzanowi eCulture

[Górski,Kadrow1996:16℄.Thesituationisdi erentinthesouth-westofthearea.In

Iwanowi e (siteBabia Góra),a Mierzanowi e Culturesettlementtogetherwithan

havevaried from lo ation to lo ation.Generally speaking, it appeared rst inthe

north-eastandlaterinthesouth-westoftheregion.Theadvan e ofTCsettlement

largelydependedonthede line ofthelatephaseoftheMierzanowi eCulture[ f.

Ma hnik1984:360℄.

Thede line oftheTCin thearea isgauged onthebasisofitsrelationtothe

early phase of theLusatian Culture (LC). LC populations olonized areas in the

vi inity ofKraków settingupsettlementsand remation emeteries onthefringes

ofthe ompa trangeofTCsites[Gedl1982:21-22;Rydzewski1983:216-217;1991;

Górski1992℄.EarlyLusatianassemblagesappearedinthevi inityofKrakówaround

13℄.Itwasthanthatthepro essoftakingovertraitstypi aloftheearlyphaseofthe

LCbytheso ietiesofthelatephaseoftheTCbegan,whi hledtothedisappearan e

ofTrz inie traits.These pro essesmust havetakenpla e after1250-1200 alBC.

Hen e,thetimeofindependentdevelopmentoftheTCinthearea anbeestimated

at a500-600years. Onthes ale ofPaul Reine ke'srelative hronologyunits,the

period stret hes from phase A2 of the Bronze Age to phase A1 of theHallstatt

period.

1. PREMISES.SOURCESANDMETHODOLOGY

Thenumber ofbronzeartifa tsknownfromtheterritoryo upiedbytheTC

israthersmall. Duetothisfa t, thebasi sour eofinformationonthe hangesin

time is erami s. An additional diÆ ulty is posedbythe fa tthatit rarely omes

fromgrave assemblages. Graves are few andgrave-goodsare s ar e asa rule. On

topofthatsomegraves are ommononesthathadbeenusedfora longtime and

ndsobtainedfromthemdonotsatisfythe riteria for ompa tassemblages.Thus,

on lusions on erning hanges intimearemainly based onsettlementmaterials.

When onstru tingasystemofTCperiodizationforwesternMaªopolska,a

spe- i hara teristi oflo alsettlementisused,namelytheexisten eofstable

settle-mentsthatwereusedforalongtimeandwhi hsupplynumerousandvariedseries

of erami s of great variety of style. Tosolve theproblem of hronologi al

diver-si ation oftheTC relying ondata fromsettlements, twofundamental onditions

mustbe met.First, onemusthavematerials fromsettlementsstudiedovera large

area.Se ond,onemustapplyappropriatepro edurestoidentifymaterialsthatare

losely relatedintime.

At present, theTC periodization system forwestern Maªopolskais based on

the study of artifa ts from site 55 in Kraków-Nowa Huta-Mogiªa [Górski 1993;

1994a℄. The settlement has been studied over the area of about 2 he tares. The

exploration has rendered over 220features of that ulture in whi h about 40,000

potsherdshavebeendis overed.Forthepurposeofpro essingthematerials from

thatsettlementa method has beenadapted whi h was usedin thestudies of

spa-tial di erentiationoftheMierzanowi e Culture settlement inIwanowi e [Kadrow

1991℄.Following theadoptedpro edurethe ontents of65 pits (ortheir portions

whi hwere onsideredas loselytime-related assemblages)weresele ted fromthe

settlementin Kraków-NowaHuta-Mogiªa for thepurposeofanalysis. Inthis ase

su h deposits a more proper term is \a umulated assemblage" to distinguish it

froma\ ompa tsettlement"inthestri tsenseoftheword[D¡browski1993:211℄.

The erami s found in these features havebeen des ribed with the use of about

80 hara teristi s and states of hara teristi s taking intoa ount thetypologyof

vessels,theirornaments,morphologi aldetails andte hnologi altraits.Theuse of

statisti al pro edures permitted to group related types of material and

distingu-ishthreestylisti allydi erentgroupsofTC erami s.Theyhavebeenidenti ed as

assemblagesoftypesA,BandC[Górski1994:74 ,Fig.2,3,Tab.IV℄.

Non-homoge-neous hara teroftypeAassemblageswasthereasonfortheirinternalsubdivision

(subtypesA1,A2and A3).Atthesite,typeD assemblages have alsobeen

distin-guished ontainingvessels from theearly phase ofthe LC.Furthermore, a group

of pits displaying the traits of types C and D (type C/D assemblages) has been

identi ed,too.Forea hdistinguishedunitthereareanalogousgroupsofmaterials

fromdi erentareaso upied bytheTC.

2. CHRONOLOGICALDIFFERENTIATIONANDDESCRIPTIONOF

ASSEMBLAGETYPES

The di erentiation of pottery, whi h has been re e ted in thedistinguishing

ofseveralassemblagetypes,hasa hronologi alsigni an e(Fig.2).Their

tempo-ral sequen e has been borne outby examples of feature stratigraphy, analysis of

o-o urren eandmutual ex lusiveness oftraitsinassemblages, tra ing ofthe

se-quen es oftypologi alandstylisti developmentof erami s,planigraphi analyses

andreferen estobetterdatedanalogous groupsofmaterials [Górski1994:74-108;

1997a℄.

Type A assemblages represent all themost typi al traits of the TC ommon

to the whole territory o upied by it. In the studied area they are syn hronized

withartifa ts fromtumulus emeteries in ›ernikiGórne,RosiejówandMiernowo

[Górski1991:35;1994:82 ℄.Onthes aleofrelative hronologyunitstheseartifa ts

anbedatedtopartsofphaseA2andphaseBoftheBronzeAge.Thistime

attri-butionfollowsfromtheanalysisofradio arbon dates andthe hronologyofsome

vessels and metal goodsdis overed at the emetery in ›erniki Górne [Kempisty

1978:401-408; Kempisty, Wªodar zak 1996℄ and Iwanowi e [Gajewski 1969℄. The

analysisofmaterials subsumedin typeAassemblages hasled tothedistinguishing

ofthree stylisti trendsamong themwhi h re e ttheevolutionof thisassemblage

type.SubtypeA1assemblages (Fig.3) are hara terized bythe o-existen e of

monsinuouspotsde oratedwithreliefstripsandhavingawidenedandslantedrim

(Fig. 3:1). The set ofused vessels is ompleted by oni al, semi- ir ular orgently

ontouredbowlsaswellas upsandbeakers(Fig.3:2). Potteryornamentationwith

in isedpatternsisnoten ounteredinsubtypeA2(Fig.4)assemblages, whi his

re-latedtotheabsen eoftheabovementionedvases.Reliefornamentationdominates

(horizontalstrips,infrequentbuttons|Fig.4:1,3,4).Analogousornamentationis

foundin subtypeA3 assemblages (Fig.5), butthesetof usedvessels isexpanded

to in lude amphorae (Fig. 5:3). Additionally,there appear potswith unders ored

transitionofthebelly intothene kwiththerimleftunwidened.

SubtypeA1 assemblages represent theoldestlinkinthestylisti development

of TC erami s in the loess areas in Kraków's vi inity. Despite the fa t thatthe

TC appeared in the nal form in this area, in subtype A1 assemblages onemay

nda few elements testifying toits tieswith older ultures. The o-o urren e of

the\Trz inie horizon"inKujawy[Czebreszuk 1996:159-164℄.Inthesegroups,the

\ar hai " element one an also onsider tra es of ordimpressions (knownfrom

Miernowo) [Kempisty 1978, Fig. 9:2-4℄. In the southern TC zone, one an also

ndde oratedvessel fragmentsbearingstylisti relations with thepatternsknown

fromtheSamborze groupofthelatephaseof theMierzanowi e Culture[Górski

1997:17℄.Theearly hronologi alpositionofsubtypeA1assemblagesisalso

on r-medbythe ndsofri hlyornamentedvasesinthe ontextofmetalartifa tsdated

tophaseA2oftheBronzeAge[Okalew|Abramek1971,Fig.4;Kªosi«ska1994:9;

1997:53℄orinradio arbondatedfeatures(Dube zno)forwhi hthedateof a1880

alBCwasobtained[Taras1995:89℄.

The pottery knownfrom subtype A2 assemblages was notde oratedwith an

in ised ornament.The disappearan e ofthein ised ornamentis, however, a lear

andpermanenttrendandnota onspi uous hronologi al phase.Consistentlywith

thistrend,a smoothtransitionto\pure" subtypeA2assemblages musthavetaken

pla e.Asanequivalentofthesematerialsinotherareasmaybe onsideredgroup3

theKujawyenvironment [Czebreszuk 1996:164-165℄.Similar materials an bealso

distinguishedinthevi inityofSandomierz[Górski1994:83℄.

SubtypeA3assemblages apparently ontributelittletothepi tureof erami s

that was sket hed for the pre eding group. The only new type of vessel that is

introdu edinthissubtypeistheamphora.Itisimportant,however,thatnewtypes

ofpotsla kingtypi allyTrz inie hara teristi s(horizontalstripandwidenedrim)

appear in this time. Su h pots are hara teristi of su essive assemblage types.

Hen e,subtypeA3assemblages havepartiallya transitional hara ter andbe ause

ofthattheyshouldbedatedwith onsiderable ertaintytothese ondpartofphase

BoftheBronzeAge.Sin ethattimetheTChadfolloweditsownpe uliarrhythm

ofdevelopmentintheareaunderdis ussion.Inviewofthis,itisdiÆ ulttoindi ate

analogousmaterials fromotherterritorieso upiedbythe ulture.

Theproblemofdi erentiationoftype Aassemblages is losely relatedtothe

ru ial issue of thepresen e of potterydisplaying traitsof Otomani, Mad'arov e,

Early Tumulusand Piliny Culturesat TC sites. Thisis a onsiderably large group

ofvarious typesofvessels madein thestylisti onventionsofthenamed ultures

representing thefourth,independent stylisti trend.The presen e ofsu hsour es

ontheloesssoilsofNie kaNidzia«ska(Nidzi aTrough)isnota resultofasingle

TypeBassemblages (Fig. 6)makea ompa tgroupof ontainers,the

amphoraeandbeakers(Fig.6:1,13).Thereisanobservabletenden ytostressthe

stru tureofthevesselsandpotsbyunders oringthetransitionofthebellyintothe

ne k(Fig.6:3,4,11-13).The setofvessels is ompletedbysimple bowl-likeforms

(Fig.6:14).Similarly tosubtypeA3assemblages, there are noanalogousmaterials

fromotherareas o upiedbytheTC. However,vessels de oratedin asimilar way

are knownfromthePilinyCulture[Rydzewski1991℄.Itfollows fromthe

planigra-phi analysis made for thesettlement at Kraków-NowaHuta-Mogiªa, site 55that

features ontainingvessels hara terized above shouldbedated tophaseC ofthe

Bronze Age [Górski 1994℄.This is not ontradi ted bydates obtained forsimilar

artifa ts fromPilinyCulture emeteries [Rydzewski1991℄.

TypeCassemblages are easytodistinguish(Fig.7).Theyare hara terizedby

the presen e of analogous vessels as in type B, but de orated with wide, verti al

groovesonthebelly(Fig.7:4-7).Theiryoungest hronologi alpositionis on rmed

byits o-o urren e(intypeC/D assemblages)with ontainers hara teristi ofthe

early phaseoftheLC.The latter,in turn,as ithas beenmentioned, are datedby

bronzepinswithbutt-likeand ross- utedheads.In onsequen eofthis,typeC/D

ges immediately pre eded them. Thusthey an be syn hronizedwith phase D of

the Bronze Age. Vessels de orated with verti al grooves are also en ountered at

manysiteslo atedprimarilywestoftheVistula,butnotasfrequentlyasinwestern

Maªopolskasettlements.Similarly datedandde oratedspe imens areknownfrom

thepre-LusatianCulture[Gedl1975:65 ,Tabl.XXVII:11-13;XXXII:1,3, 8,10℄.

Type C/D assemblages display mixed traits (Fig. 8). What setsthem apart is

be-tween1400and1350 alBC.AttheinvestigatedsettlementatNowaHuta-Mogiªa,

phaseC of theBronzeAge issyn hronizedwith typeB assemblages whi h

orre-spondto only one, i.e. the fth onstru tionphase. The lengthof phase Bof the

BronzeAgemaybeestimatedat a200yearswhileitsbeginningsinCentralEurope

are believedtohavetakenpla earound1600 alBC[Forenbaher1993℄.Asimple

al ulation shows that the rst four onstru tion phases (I-IV)at the settlement

at Nowa Huta-Mogiªa, orresponding to the lassi phase, lasted longer (240-320

years)thanphaseBoftheBronzeAge.Hen e,thebeginningsoftheTCsettlement

inthevi inityofNowaHutashouldbedatedto1700-1600 alBC.Whereasthelate

phase,datedtophaseDoftheBronzeAgeandidenti edwithtypeCassemblages,

isequivalent to two onstru tionphases (VI-VII)or theperiod of 120-160years.
