Pictured above nearing compietion is

Radisson D i a m o n d , the world's first large

SWATH cruise liner. As work on the

18,000gt vessel is ahead of scheduie at

Rauma Yards' Rauma worl<s in Finland,

completion should be prior to the

con-tractual delivery date of 30 April 1992.

IVlodel tank tests were carried out at

IVIARIN in The Netherlands and the vessel

is classified with Det norske Veritas.

Fur-ther details can be found in Tony

New-man's annual cruise liner report on page

E6.

Solidarnosc marks the return ofthe

Cop-enhagen yard of Burmeister & Wain to

the Panamax bulk carrier market, after a

period spent concentrating on the

con-struction of products tankers. This BCT70

bulk carrier departs from previous

prac-tice by dispensing with the distinctive

bulbous bow, in favour of a newforebody

hull form with a straight stem.

S o l i d a r n o s c is the first vessel to receive

Det norske Veritas' HC/EA notation which

allows heavy cargoes to be carried at full

draught, with specified combinations of

empty holds, thus allowing greater

flexi-bility of loading. Details of other new

de-signs from Denmark can be found in our

special feature which begins on page E33.

Naval Architect

The magnificent grand atrium on Ecstasy,

the second of Carnival Cruise Lines'

70,000gt diesel-electric liners ordered

from Kvaerner Masa-Yards in Finland. It

rises up through six decks and is

sur-mounted by a large giass dome. Carnival

has recently ordered a fourth ship in this

class, which will boost the fortunes of

Fin-land's consolidated shipbuilding industry

— see our feature on page E75.

This unfamiliar piece of equipment is

like-ly to be seen on all future generations of

self-unloading bulk carriers. It is a special

bulkhead door (illustrated here in its open

position) designed by the Swedish

Consilium group to seal travelling

con-veyor belts. Further information on this

and other advances in the cranes,

cargohandling and access gear sector can

be found in our feature which begins on

page E95.

An example of surface objects (the

tanktop and main transverse bulkheads

of a bulk carrier) generated by one of the

design packages from the Finnish

com-pany Napa Oy. A full report on this and

other leading CAD/CAM consultants'

sys-tems appears in our special feature which

begins on page Et94.

A total of 31 integrated bridge systems

of the SNA-90 Total Navigator 3 type

have been sold to date by the Japan

Radio Co Ltd, together with 45 sets ofthe

more complex SNA-91 model, which

fea-tures machinery and hull-condition

dis-plays. The concept of integrated bridge

control systems seems firmly set to stay

with the industry, as our feature on page

E206 explains.

DSR-Baltic, completed in February this

year for Deutsche Seereederei, of

Rostock, is an example of Bremer

Vulkan's BV2700 Panamax-breadth

cellular container design. The 45,000dwt

ship can carry 2,674TEU (including 100

reefer boxes) or 2,400 TEU at 14 tonnes

homogeneous load. Propulsion is by a

BV-Sulzer 6RTA72 engine of 16,440kW for

a speed of 19 knots. A special feature on

German shipbuilding begins on page

E239.

Truckline Ferries' new passenger/vehicle

ferry, the 20,000gt Barfleur, entered

ser-vice last month. She was built by

Kvaerner IVIasa-Yards at Helsinki and will

be followed this month by a second

vessel of a different design from the same

builder's Turku yard; this vessel will be

operated by Truckline's parent Brittany

Ferries. An article on the Barfleur appears

on page E260.

In advance of the formal announcement

(anticipated in June) of the European E3

supertanker design, one of the German

participants in the consortium,

Howaldts-werke-Deutsche Werft, has already been

working on a 280,000dwt double-hull

concept (illustrated here). Other aspects of

tanker designs for the future are discussed

in our feature which begins on page E314.

Brittany Ferries has taken delivery of its

second new ship in two months from

Kvaerner Masa-Yards. The 27,000gt

Normandie, built at the Turku New Yard, is

designed for overnight cruise-ferry voyages,

initially from Portsmouth to Caen. Seen

here is the l\/lacGregor-Navire lift serving

the lower hold. A description of this vessel

appears as part of our Scandinavian feature,

beginning on page E296.

Chiquita Frances is the first of five

400.000ffi refrigerated cargo ships

originally ordered by Gustaf Eril<son from

Kvaerner Kleven, but subsequently

transferred to Chiquita Brands. The

underwater hull has been optimised for

speeds up to 22 Icnots. The remaining four

ships in the series have been modified using

new hull lines to give a greater cargo

capacity. See our special feature on reefer
