PREFACE

I n r e c e n t y e a r s r a p i d advances have been made i n computer a p p l i c a t i o n s i n s h i p h y -drodynamics and s h i p d e s i g n , due t o an i n c r e a s e i n t h e p e r f o r m a n c e o f computer hardware.

I n t h e f i e l d o f s h i p h y d r o d y n a m i c s , v a r i o u s methods have been d e v e l o p e d f o r t h e p r e d i c t i o n o f c a l m w a t e r r e s i s t a n c e and m a n o e u v r i n g c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s . These methods range f r o m r a t h e r s i m p l e e m p i r i c a l methods t o v e r y advanced C o m p u t a t i o n a l F l u i d Dynamics (CFD).

I n s h i p d e s i g n . Computer A i d e d D e s i g n (CAD) a p p l i c a t i o n s were m a i n l y f o c u s e d on the d e s c r i p t i o n o f t h e geometry o f t h e s h i p and t h e c a l c u l a t i o n o f h y d r o s t a t i c p r o p e r t i e s . Much a t t e n t i o n has been g i v e n t o d r a w i n g systems and c o n n e c t i v i t y t o systems f o r s u p p o r t i n g t h e p r o d u c t i o n p r o c e s s o f s h i p s (CAM).

I n t e g r a t i o n o f h y d r o s t a t i c c a l c u l a t i o n s i n s h i p d e s i g n s o f t w a r e o f f e r s new p o s s i -b i l i t i e s t o s h i p d e s i g n e r s f o r o p t i m i z i n g t h e d e s i g n o f s h i p s .

The M a r i t i m e Research I n s t i t u t e N e t h e r l a n d s (MARIN) c o n s i d e r e d i t t i m e l y t o o r g a n i z e an I n t e r n a t i o n a l Symposium on CFD and CAD i n S h i p D e s i g n , w i t h t h e a i m t o p r o -v i d e a f o r u m f o r e x c h a n g i n g i d e a s and i n f o r m a t i o n between d e -v e l o p e r s and u s e r s o f CFD and CAD systems.
