Using umbrellas as mobile rain gauges: prototype demonstration

The sound of raindrops falling on an umbrella is not only soothing, it is an indicator for rainfall intensity. We demonstrate a first prototype of an umbrella fitted with an acoustic rain gauge. By using umbrellas in this way, numerous moving rain gauges become available for precipitation monitoring in data-poor areas.
