ABSTRACT
The main aim of this work was to develop composite elec-trodes for SPCFC (Symmetrical Proton Ceramic Fuel Cell). The paper presents the results of structural studies of two compounds synthesized by the solid state high-tempera-ture reaction: electrolyte Ba0.9La0.1Zr0.25Sn0.25In0.5O3-δ and
electrode SrFe0.75Mo0.25O3-δ. Regardless of the synthesis
conditions, both oxides adopted the cubic perovskite crystalline structure (space group Pm-3m). By means of high-temperature diffraction measurements, it was also shown that Pm-3m symmetry for both compounds is maintained throughout the analyzed temperature range, i.e. from 25 °C to 900 °C. The values of coefficients of thermal expansion were calculated to be 12.4(2)·10–6 K-1
and 18.5(4)·10–6 K-1 for the electrolyte and the electrode,
respectively. The results of electrochemical measure-ments of conductivity of dense electrolyte material sinter (above 95% of theoretical density) and a cell with com-posite electrodes in a symmetrical system constructed on the basis of studied ceramics are also presented. The tests were carried out in atmospheres of humidified synthetic air and Ar/H2 mixture. The total cell conductivity was
3.80·10–4 S·cm-1 at 500 °C.

velop new, more efficient and reliable energy conver-sion methods. Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), which are electrochemical devices converting chemical energy contained in fuel and oxidant directly into electricity and heat, show high efficiency of energy conversion, therefore they are of special interest in the emerging market of hydrogen technologies, also in the case of so-called clean coal technologies in which hydrocarbon fuels are used in a more efficient and environmentally friendly way.
SOFC technology is based on purely ionic-conductive electrolytes, typically oxides conducting oxygen anions; the most popular and commonly used material of this type is yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ). These materials show high chemical stability at elevated temperatures (600–1000 °C) and a wide range of atmosphere (reduc-tive, oxida(reduc-tive, neutral) as well as a high value of ionic conductivity.
However, the high operating temperature of SOFC cells means that the materials used for their construc-tion must be sufficiently strong, which in turn increases the production costs. Therefore, many laboratories around the world are conducting research on new materials that could be used as electrode materials, electrolytes and interconnectors for SOFCs respectively, as well as the possibility of reducing the working tem-perature of the cells themselves to a level where ma-terial costs would be much lower. These types of cells are called intermediate temperature - solid oxide fuel cell (IT-SOFC).
One of the methods of reducing the operating tem-perature of SOFCs is the use of electrolyte other than

zasoby paliw kopalnych zmuszają do rozwijania nowych, wydajniejszych i niezawodnych sposobów jej przetwa-rzania.
YSZ, which has better ionic conductivity in the lower temperature range [1].
Recently, in order to improve the efficiency of op-eration and reduce the operating temperature of SOF-Cs, which will have a positive impact on production costs and guarantee a stable, long-term operation, it has been proposed to replace the oxygen-conducting electrolyte with one that exhibits proton conductivity. Literature reports indicate that the operation of such a system is effective [2]. High temperature proton con-ductors (HTPC) usually have purely ionic (proton) elec-trical conductivity. From this point of view, they can be considered as potential electrolyte materials for both SOFC/PCFC (proton ceramic fuel cells) and SOEC (solid oxide electrolyser cell) [3, 4] cells.
Such a modification has many advantages, among which one of the most important is the change in the direction of ion flow through the electrolyte [2]. As a re-sult, water, which is the product of electrode reactions in the fuel cell, is formed on the side of the electrode supplied with air, but not on the side of the anode, as is the case of oxygconducting electrolytes. This en-sures more efficient use of fuel [5]. The same effect is observed in the case of an electrolyser of water vapour, producing hydrogen, thanks to which it is possible to
produce clean, undiluted H2. Other advantages of using
proton-conducting electrolytes in fuel cells are related electrolyser cell) [3, 4].
Zapewnia to bardziej wydajne wykorzystanie paliwa [5]. Ten sam efekt obserwowany jest w przypadku elektroli-zera pary wodnej, produkującego wodór, dzięki czemu możliwe jest wytworzenie czystego, nierozcieńczonego
H2. Inne zalety zastosowania

to maintaining high voltage levels and ensuring the stability of the anode by eliminating water vapour on its side.
For PCFC-type cells, an effective, single-phase elec-trode material showing mixed proton-electron con-ductivity has not yet been developed, thanks to which effective work would occur in the entire volume of the electrode. When using a cermet material, the effective working surface is limited to the boundary of three phases: electrode-electrolyte-supplied gas.
As in the case of anodes, there is no ideal cathode material showing mixed proton-electron conductivity, and in this case two-phase cermets are also commonly used. The solution for the lack of single-phase elec-trodes working in the whole volume seems to be the use of composite electrodes, which would include elec-trolyte material (providing ion transport) and electrodes (ensuring electron conductivity). Thanks to this solution it will be possible to provide mixed proton-electron conductivity in the entire volume of the electrode as schematically shown in Fig. 2.
The key problems that make it difficult to popularize the use of SOFCs are the high costs of their manufactur-ing and the decrease in efficiency over a longer period of use. It has been observed that degradation of SOFC yield is usually caused by the grain growth of the cata-lytically active electrode material, sulphur poisoning or deposition of carbon on the electrode.
A relatively new concept is the construction of the so-called symmetrical fuel cells [6–8]; this approach has also been used in this work. In a symmetrical cell, the use of the same material of both the anode and the cathode, not only simplifies the cell manufacturing process, but also solves the problem of carbon deposi-tion, because the deposited carbon can be removed by replacing the redox reactions occurring on the anode and cathode [9, 10 ].
The purpose of this work was to synthesize materials: electrolyte Ba0.9La0.1Zr0.25Sn0.25In0.5O3−δ and electrode
SrFe0.75Mo0.25O3-δ, develop a composite electrode based
on them, as well as characterize the properties including the crystal structure of the obtained materials, electri-cal and transport properties of the electrolyte and cells measured in various atmospheres.
2. Research methodology
Electrolyte Ba0.9La0.1Zr0.25Sn0.25In0.5O3−δ and electrode
SrFe0.75Mo0.25O3-δ materials were obtained by high
tem-perature solid state reaction using zirconium, indium, tin, lanthanum, iron and molybdenum oxides as well as barium and strontium carbonates (with 99.9% purity) as substrates. The starting compounds were weighed two protonowo-elektronowe i również w tym przypadku
elektrody kompozytowej i wykonanie komórki ogniwa, a także charakterystyka właściwości obejmująca struk-turę krystaliczną otrzymanych materiałów, właściwości elektryczne i transportowe elektrolitu i komórki ogniwa mierzone w różnych atmosferach .
2. Metodyka badań
Materiały elektrolitu Ba0,9La0,1Zr0,25Sn0,25In0,5O3−δ i
Zhomogenizowane substraty w formie
in a stoichiometric proportion, and then homogenized by milling with the addition of isopropyl alcohol in the SPEX SamplePrep 8000D rotating-vibratory mill.
The process of preparing the electrode material consisted in firing the previously prepared compacts in synthetic air at 1100 °C for 30 hours.
The electrolyte material was obtained in several stag-es. The homogenised powder substrates were calcined at 950 °C for 24 h in a synthetic air atmosphere to de-compose barium carbonate and pre-react the reactants; the material was then ground and reheated at 950 °C for 24 h. The calcined powder was uniaxially pressed at 100 MPa and heated in an atmosphere of atmospheric air for 4 hours at temperatures of 1200 °C and 1550 °C. To minimize high-temperature evaporation of elements such as barium, indium or tin, sintered compacts were embedded in powder of the same composition and placed in closed crucibles.
Structural measurements were made by X-ray dif-fractometry (XRD). The measurements were carried out in the angular range of 10–110° using a PANalytical Em-pyrean diffractometer with a CuKα lamp and a PIXcel3D detector. The Anton Paar HTK 1200N high-temperature adapter was used for structural measurements at el-evated temperatures (HT-XRD), which were carried out in the temperature range from 25 °C to 900 °C in the
flow of dry synthetic air (100 cm3/min, H
2O content
< 3ppm); the analyzed material was subjected to hu-midification before the measurement, which consisted in heating samples for 24 hours at 250 °C in the flow
moist synthetic air (about 3% by volume of H2O). The
structural parameters were determined using the Riet-veld method using the GSAS/EXPGUI software [11, 12]. The analysis was carried out using the spatial group Pm-3m and assumed the adjustment of the network parameter, curve parameters, zero offset and thermal vibration factor Uiso.
The material heat treated at 1200 °C after being crushed in a mortar served as the component of the composite electrode, while the material, heated at 1550 °C in the form of a dense sinter (relative density > 95%), served as the electrolyte for further testing. In order to determine the transport properties of the electrolyte itself, platinum electrodes were applied to one of the sinters and subjected to impedance tests.
The electrolyte and electrode materials were mixed and homogenized in a mortar in two different weight ratios (1:1 and 2:1, respectively) to prepare the com-posite electrode. The prepared mixtures were then mixed with the addition of an organic binder, thus pre-paring the electrode pastes. The dense electrolyte was ground to a thickness of 0.4 mm to clean and prepare the surface for the application of composite electrodes. proszku poddano kalcynacji w 950 °C przez 24 h w
Pomiary strukturalne wykonano metodą dyfrakto-metrii rentgenowskiej (XRD). Pomiary przeprowadzono w zakresie kątowym 10–110° z wykorzystaniem
dyfrak-tometru PANalytical Empyrean z lampą CuKα i
detekto-rem PIXcel3D. Do pomiarów strukturalnych w podwyż-szonych temperaturach (HT-XRD), przeprowadzonych w zakresie temperatur od 25 °C do 900 °C w przepływie
suchego powietrza syntetycznego (100 cm3/min,
zawar-tość H2O < 3ppm), użyto przystawki
wysokotempera-turowej Anton Paar HTK 1200N; analizowany materiał przed pomiarem poddano nawilżaniu, tj. wygrzewaniu przez 24 h w 250 °C w przepływie wilgotnego (ok. 3% obj.
H2O) powietrza syntetycznego. Parametry strukturalne
zostały określone metodą Rietvelda, przy użyciu opro-gramowania GSAS/EXPGUI [11, 12]. Analiza została przeprowadzona z wykorzystaniem grupy przestrzennej Pm-3m i zakładała dopasowanie parametru sieciowego, parametrów krzywej, przesunięcia zera i współczynnika
Aby przygotować elektrodę kompozytową, materiał elektrolitowy i elektrodowy zostały zmieszane i zhomo-genizowane w moździerzu w dwóch różnych propor-cjach wagowych (odpowiednio 1:1 i 2:1). Następnie przygotowane mieszaniny zmieszano z dodatkiem orga-nicznego lepiszcza, przygotowując w ten sposób pasty elektrodowe. Gęsty elektrolit zeszlifowano do grubości 0,4 mm w celu oczyszczenia i przygotowania powierzch-ni do napowierzch-niesiepowierzch-nia kompozytowych elektrod.
They were applied on the electrolyte by screen printing, creating two electrode layers on each side. The cells thus prepared were fired at 1100 ° C in atmospheric air for 2 hours. Layers of platinum electrodes, serving as interconnectors, were applied to the fired electrodes and the whole was fired at 980 °C for 15 min. Cells thus obtained were subjected to electrochemical tests.
The electrical properties of the dense Ba0.9La0.1Zr0.25Sn0.25In0.5O3−δ and cells were measured
by AC electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) using a Solartron 1260 frequency response analyzer. The samples were mounted in a Probostat probe with platinum electrodes. The applied extortion was 25 mV, and the measurement frequency range was 0.1–106 Hz. The tests were carried out in the temperature range of 300–800 °C in atmospheres of dry and humidified

humidified hydrogen. When matching the impedance spectra, the appropriate substitute circuit R0-[R1,CPE1

3. Results and discussion
3.1. Structural measurements
Fig. 3 presents a list of diffraction data obtained for the tested Ba0.9La0.1Zr0.25Sn0.25In0.5O3−δ material at various
stages of preparation. Reflections from barium carbon-ate are practically imperceptible already in the case of a powder that was once calcined at 950 °C, while the reheating effect resulted in a higher degree of conver-sion of the starting oxides.
The compound synthesized both at 1200 °C and at 1550 °C crystallized in the form of one phase with a cubic perovskite structure and a space group Pm-3m (Figs. 4a and 4b). An increase in the value of the cell parameter a was observed for the material obtained at 1200 °C, when compared to the material obtained at a higher temperature; this relationship is described in more detail in Ref. [13].
Fig. 5 shows the diffraction data together with the fit results for the SrFe0.75Mo0.25O3-δ electrode material.
Similarly to the electrolyte compound, it also crystal-lized in the form of a cubic phase with the space group Pm-3m.
The results of thermo-diffraction measurements of the humidified Ba0.9La0.1Zr0.25Sn0.25In0.5O3−δ material are
shown in Fig. 6a in the form of temperature depen-dence of the cell parameter a.
In the initial heating stage, an increase in the value of parameter a (and the volume of the elementary cell at the same time) to a temperature of approx.
Zastosowane wymuszenie wynosiło 25 mV, a zakres częstotliwości pomiarów 0,1–
106 Hz. Testy przeprowadzono w zakresie temperatur
300–800 °C w atmosferach suchego oraz nawilżonego
powietrza syntetycznego (około 3% obj. H2O), a także
nawilżonego wodoru. Przy dopasowaniu widm impe-dancyjnych wykorzystano odpowiedni obwód zastęp-czy R0-[R1,CPE1]-[R2,CPE2] i oprogramowanie Scribner Associates Inc. ZView 2.9.
3. Wyniki i dyskusja
3.1. Pomiary strukturalne

is observed, above which a drastic decrease of the pa-rameter a is visible up to 300 °C. This effect is caused by the desorption of water built-in earlier to the crystal structure of the electrolyte. In the range from 300 °C to 900 °C, the continuous expansion of the elementary cell and the increase in the value of parameter a are ob-served. During cooling from 900 °C to 300 °C a decrease in the value of parameter a is visible, while its course is practically linear in the 900–400 °C range.
Interestingly, the elementary cell volume increases below 300 °C and the increase is observed up to 100 °C. This effect can be explained by the extraordinary af-finity of the test compound to even trace amounts of
H2O present in the atmosphere; studies described in
Ref. [13] show that oxides of this type are able to in-corporate into their structure water vapour from the air even when stored at room temperature. In this case, there may be a trace amount of water vapour in the synthetic air; despite the fact that its content in the gas flowing through the furnace chamber is below 3 ppm,
a constant flow of 100 cm3·min-1 may be sufficient for
a sample of small volume to absorb significant amounts of H2O [14–16].
The value of parameter a has decreased again below 100 °C. Based on the data measured during cooling from 900 °C to 400 °C, a linear coefficient of thermal
expan-sion TEC was determined, which was 12.4(2)·10–6 K-1,
which is the result that falls within the range of values typical for this type of material.
HT-XRD measurement was also made for a sample of the SrFe0.75Mo0.25O3-δ electrode material, and its results
are presented in Fig. 6b.
An increase in the cell parameter a is observed dur-gularnej strukturze perowskitu prostego i grupie
prze-strzennej Pm-3m (Rys. 4a i 4b). Dla materiału otrzyma-nego w temperaturze 1200 °C zaobserwowano wzrost wartości parametru sieciowego a w porównaniu do materiału otrzymanego w wyższej temperaturze; za-leżność tę opisano szerzej w pracy [13].
Rys. 5 przedstawia dane dyfrakcyjne wraz z wy-nikami dopasowania dla materiału elektrodowego
SrFe0,75Mo0,25O3-δ. Podobnie jak w przypadku związku
elektrolitowego ten także wykrystalizował w postaci fazy regularnej o grupie przestrzennej Pm-3m.
Wyniki pomiarów termodyfrakcyjnych nawilżonego materiału Ba0,9La0,1Zr0,25Sn0,25In0,5O3-δ przedstawiono na
Rys. 6a w formie temperaturowej zależności parametru sieciowego a.
Efekt ten można wytłumaczyć nadzwyczajnym powinowactwem badanego związku do nawet
ślado-wych ilości H2O obecnych w atmosferze; badania
opisa-ne w pracy [13] wykazują, że tlenki tego typu są zdolopisa-ne

ing heating in the whole analyzed temperature range. The relationship behaves in a practically linear manner in the ranges from room temperature to 400 °C and from 400 °C to 900 °C. There were no significant discrep-ancies in the values of parameters a determined during cooling in relation to those determined during heating. Similarly to the Ba0.9La0.1Zr0.25Sn0.25In0.5O3−δ
com-pound, TEC was determined based on data from 400– 900 ° C during cooling. TEC was 18.5(4)·10–6 K-1 for the electrode material, so it is a value significantly differ-ent to that for the electrolyte being tested; this gives grounds to assume that the cell constructed from the discussed materials would not show proper thermo-mechanical stability.
wbudowywać do swej struktury parę wodną z powietrza nawet podczas składowania w temperaturze pokojowej.
Poniżej 100 °C wartość parametru a ponownie zma-lała.

3.2. Measurements of electrical conductivity
Figs. 7a–7d show examples of impedance spectra obtained as a result of measurements carried out at 300 °C and 800 °C in atmospheres of humidified synthetic air and argon-hydrogen (5%) for dense Ba0.9La0.1Zr0.25Sn0.25In0.5O3−δ sinter and a cell made of
Ba0.9La0.1Zr0.25Sn0.25In0.5O3−δ electrolyte and composite
Ba0.9La0.1Zr0.25Sn0.25In0.5O3−δ- SrFe0.75Mo0.25O3-δ
electro-des (mass ratio 2:1). The measurement was also carried out in dry synthetic air in the case of the electrolyte.
In the first approach, an attempt was made to con-struct a cell with composite electrodes with a 1:1 mass ratio, but this amount of electrolyte material was not sufficient to compensate for the large difference in the TEC coefficients of both materials and to avoid adhesion problems with the electrolyte. This led to the cell being unable to perform conductivity measurements. A cell containing an electrode composite with a 2:1 ratio was therefore made. The greater amount of electrolyte material in the composite improved the mechanical properties to the extent that the cell could be subjected to impedance testing.
For both electrolyte and cells at the highest tempe-rature the resistance recorded in the hydrogen atmo-sphere is much larger than that recorded for synthetic air. Interestingly, as the temperature decreases, this difference becomes smaller. The difference becomes less important at 300 °C.
In the case of sintered electrolyte (Fig. 7a and 7b) in the low temperature range (300–500 °C) impedance spectra show one semicircle, which can be interpreted as the total electrolyte conductivity. In the temperature range of 500–600 °C, the change of the charge trans-port mechanism is most likely [13], resulting in a shift relative to the origin (total electrolyte conductance is interpreted as the sum of the shift and semicircle). The shift becomes the dominant element at the highest temperatures (600–800 °C) and the second semicircle appears (in the low frequency range - right one), which corresponds to the transfer of charge at the border between the sample and the electrodes.
Impedance spectra that were determined for the cell (Figs. 7c and 7d) in the low temperature range (300–500 °C) consist of two semicircles and show the offset relative to the origin of the coordinate system; the shift and semicircle in the high frequency range (left one) is interpreted as the part related to the electrolyte, while the second semicircle (right one) as the electrode resistance. At elevated temperatures, the spectra look similar to those of the electrolyte, but in this case the whole spectrum is the cell resistance.
Obtained impedance data were the basis for
deter-3.2. Pomiary przewodnictwa elektrycznego
Rys. 7a–7d przedstawiają przykładowe widma impe-dancyjne otrzymane w wyniku pomiarów przeprowa-dzonych w temperaturach 300 °C oraz 800 °C w at-mosferach nawilżonego powietrza syntetycznego oraz mieszaniny argon-wodór (5%) w przypadku gęstego spieku Ba0,9La0,1Zr0,25Sn0,25In0,5O3−δ oraz komórki
ogni-wa z elektrolitem Ba0,9La0,1Zr0,25Sn0,25In0,5O3−δ i
kom-pozytowymi elektrodami Ba0,9La0,1Zr0,25Sn0,25In0,5O3−δ -SrFe0,75Mo0,25O3-δ (stosunek masowy 2:1). W przypadku
Doprowadziło to do unie-możliwienia wykonania komórki ogniwa do pomiarów przewodnictwa.
mining the conductivity characteristics of the respec-tive samples as a function of temperature. Figs. 8a and 8b show the received dependencies in the Arrhenius system.
In the case of electrolyte the conductivity in the at-mosphere of humidified synthetic air is higher than the conductivity in a dry atmosphere throughout the entire temperature range. Interestingly, in the case of values obtained in the atmosphere of humidified hydrogen at elevated temperatures, they are smaller than those ob-tained in dry synthetic air. However, as the temperature decreases, the conductivity values increase systemati-cally up to the level obtained in the humidified synthetic air. In the case of the conductivity of the cell, the values are almost identical to those obtained for the
electro-lyte material. This proves that the transport of H+ ions
is not disturbed by the electrode. This is undoubtedly the effect of using electrolyte materials as one of the components of composite electrodes.
Table 1 summarizes the total conductivity values of the electrolyte and the cell measured in atmospheres
of humidified synthetic air and Ar/H2. As one can see,

the values calculated for the cell are smaller than those obtained in the case of pure electrolyte almost in the entire temperature range. These values are slightly higher only at the lowest temperatures.
Table 2 summarizes the values of the activation en-ergy of the conductivity calculated on the basis of the slope of the line which corresponded to the linear fit of the data in the Arrhenius system. related to a significant contribution of the proton con-ductivity, whose mechanism is characterized by a lower energy barrier [17].
In addition, proton conductivity values were de-termined in the case of electrolyte over the entire temperature range and transference number values as the ratio of the proton conductivity to the total con-ductivity (Table 3). These values do not exceed 0.7 in the studied temperature range, which indicates a still high content of the component associated with oxygen vacancies. The obtained values of proton conductivity are quite similar to the values available in literature for perovskite oxides [5, 17].

4. Summary
Ba0.9La0.1Zr0.25Sn0.25In0.5O3−δ electrolyte and
SrFe0.75Mo0.25O3-δ electrode material were synthesized
and tested for crystalline structure, electrical and trans-port properties measured in various atmospheres (dry synthetic air, humidified synthetic air and Ar/H2 mixture). The materials were obtained as single-phase, with cubic structure and symmetry Pm-3m. HT-XRD measurements were carried out which allowed to determine the TEC coefficients of both materials.
Two compositions of Ba0.9La0.1Zr0.25Sn0.25In0.5O3−δ
-SrFe0.75Mo0.25O3-δ composite electrodes with different
mass ratio (1:1 and 2: 1) were prepared. In the case of 1:1 electrodes, due to the uncompensated large diffe-rence in the TEC coefficients of the compounds, their adhesion with the electrolyte was insufficient, making it impossible to construct the cell. The increase of the electrolyte fraction in the electrode at the ratio of 2:1 improved the mechanical properties so much that it was possible to make a cell and subject it to impedance tests. Measurements of transport properties showed the appearance of a proton component of conductivity, as evidenced by the corresponding decrease in the im-pedance value of samples tested in a humidified at-mosphere. The obtained values of proton conductivity are comparable to other perovskite oxides from the Ba-Sr-Zr-Ce system and others.
The presented research shows that it is possible to use composite electrodes in a symmetrical system in
4. Podsumowanie
Elektrolit Ba0,9La0,1Zr0,25Sn0,25In0,5O3−δ oraz materiał
elektro-dowy SrFe0,75Mo0,25O3-δ zostały zsyntezowane i przebadane
pod kątem struktury krystalicznej, właściwości elektrycz-nych i transportowych mierzoelektrycz-nych w różelektrycz-nych atmosferach (suchego powietrza syntetycznego, nawilżonego powietrza
syntetycznego oraz mieszaniny Ar/H2). Materiały
otrzyma-no jako jedotrzyma-nofazowe, o strukturze regularnej i symetrii Pm--3m.
