SEROLOGICAL TESTS AND EOSINOPHILIE IN 500 OBSERVED TRICHI- NELLOSIS CASES WITH DIFFERENT CLINICAL DURATION AND

SEVERITY OF THE DISEASE

On the basis of his own observations regards the outbreaks of trichinellosis in Poland, author pointed out the difficulties in diagnosis of this disease, expecially in non-hospital practice. Clinical picture of these cases was different to those generally described.

In diagnosis of these cases a great role play the serological tests and eosino- philie. It is important to know how to interprete the results of these tests.

The aim of the present experiment was to observe the behavior of precipitin ring test, microscopic precipitin test with living larvae and the complement fixa- tion test in trichinellosis patients with different clinical picture of the disease.

500 trichinellosis patients, aged 3-74 years have been put under observation.

All of these cases were typed according to the author's own criteria based mainly on clinical evidences.

According to the severity of the disease, patients were divided into the four

following groups: I. asymptomatic, 2. light, 3. moderate, and 4. severe.

Serological tests and eosinophilie in relation to the age of patients, severity and duration of the disease and oedema of eyelids were tabulated and the results may summarised as follows:

1.

No constant relationship has been found between the appearence of serolo- gical reactions or eosinophilie and the age of the patients.

2. The appearance of serological tests and eosinophilie in relation to the severity of the disease has been noted. In the group of severe and moderate cases, the percen- tage of positive serological tests and eosinophilie was higher than in the group of light and asymptomatic cases. Among the severe cases some negative results were also stated.

3. Constant relationship has been found between serological tests or eosino- philie and the duration of the disease. Eosinophilie has been demonstrated as early as on the 2nd week following infection. In a few cases examined one year after recovery, no eosinophilie has been found. The earlest positive serological tests were obtained in the 3rd week of infection. They have not disappeared until one year following recovery.

4. No relationship between eosinophilie and serological tests has been noted.

5. No constant relationship between serological reactions or eosinophilie and

oedema of eyelids has been seen.
