Commutative algebra

problem set 10, for 11.12.2019

discrete valuations, Dedekind domains

You do not have to write the solutions, but please be prepared to present your solutions smoothly at the board.

Since we have not finished discussing Set 9, you can still declare problems 2, 3, 4, 5 from Set 9.

Problem 1.

Let p be a prime number. We can write any non-zero x ∈ Q uniquely as pm·ab, where m, a, b ∈ Z and a, b are coprime to p. Define vp(x) = m.

1. Prove that vp is a discrete valuation on Q.

2. Find the valuation ring of vp and its residue field (quotient by the maximal ideal).

Problem 2.

Prove that Z[

−5] is a Dedekind domain, but it is not a PID.

Problem 3.

Give an example of a dimension one Noetherian domain which is not normal.

Problem 4. Reminder: the Chinese Remainder Theorem [2 points]

Let A be a Dedekind domain, take ideals I1, . . . , In ⊆ A and elements x1, . . . , xn ∈ A. Prove that the system of congruences x ≡ xk mod Ik for 1 ¬ k ¬ n has a solution x ∈ A if and only if xj ≡ xk mod (Ik+ Ij) for 1 ¬ j < k ¬ n. (Note that we do not assume that the ideals are pairwise coprime!)

Hint: you may use the sequence of modules

A →M

k

A/Ik M

j<k

A/(Ij+ Ik)

with arrows defined such that the statement above is equivalent to the exactness of the sequence. Localize in a prime ideal p; what can you say about Ap?

We wish to consider in this note Waring’s problem for unramified exten- sions of the ring of p-adic integers Z p.. For Z p the problem has been con- sidered extensively (see [B]

In Section 4 we consider the linearized problem (3.1); first in 4(a) we prove the existence of solutions in a half-space, in 4(b) we obtain the regu- larity of solutions and in the

You do not have to write the solutions, but please be prepared to present your solutions smoothly at the board.. Since we have not finished discussing Set 8, you can still

We skip the proofs of the following facts: A is a Dedekind domain (the proof as in problem 2 from set 10) and the ideal class group of A is Z 2 (the proof would make another

Let A be a finitely generated k-algebra, where k is algerbaically closed, and m its maximal ideal.. Prove that the inclusion in part 1 is
