Last year two of the most powerful medium-speed diesel engines ever built went to sea in the very fast Japanese passenger/vehicle feiry Sitzaian, built by IHI for Shin Nihonkai. Each of the Diesel United-built Pielstick 18PC4.2B engines (one of which is seen here on test) develops 23,850kW for a service speed of 29.4 knots. Our annual analysis of the diesel engine market begins on page 7 and includes a section on gas turbines, now being re-examined by some operators for mainstream ship propulsion, following an upsurge in their use on high-speed light-weight ferries.

Seen here is the MacGregor sidedoor/ramp on the Hurtigruten cruise-ferry Polarlys, newly completed by Ulstein. Sidesiiell access, chosen as best for the many quays called at, follows that of a trio of 1 9 9 3 / 9 4 German-built ships. The ramp provides entry both to a vehicle elevator and to twin pallet lifts. Further information on this ship and her near-sister Nordkapp, built by Kvaerner Kleven, appears in our article on page 6.
