P R O D U C T I O N Engineers know the extent o f industry’s debt to the transm ission belt.

O rdinary folk may reflect th at no single developm ent has done more to increase the volum e and lower the cost o f consum er goods.

Long lines o f m achines are now driven by the same pow er unit through transm ission belts, m ulti

plying by m any times the o u tp u t capacity o f sim ilar m achines forty or fifty years ago. T hroughout t h a t tim e , B .T .R .-S ilv e rto w n engineers have solved knotty problem s and provided new and better belts to satisfy dem ands for higher speeds; for greater flexi

bility, tensile strength and en d u r

an ce; for resistance to climatic

changes, acid and chem ical fumes, oil, etc.

The variety o f types, sizes an d special grades now supplied is surprisingly great, ranging from the tiny circular belt driving a dom estic vacuum cleaner to flat belts 50" wide, tran sm ittin g nearly a th ousand horse-pow er an d m oving at 5000 ft. per m inute.

LETTER FROM A MANAGER

— “ The other day I went through the --- mine. They were in trouble. The plant was composed of machines bought here, there and everywhere. Price seemed to have been the main consideration. The result, as might have been expected, was like a badly blended team. The individual machines, the items of equipment, were in themselves, perhaps, reasonably good, but they had not been designed to work together, particu

larly on this job. Result, hold-ups all along ; technical men from all over the country arguing who was to blame, each putting it on to the other’s machine. It would have been far better if they had let a specialist firm supply the entire plant from start _ to finish . . . .”

Finer Crushing w i t h

a PEG SO N -TELSM ITH G Y R A S P H E R E

This machine is the very latest expression of modern crushing practice. It is earning an international reputa

tion among great concerns, whose repeat orders are an earnest of the outstanding efficiency of the gyra- sphere, which is built in sizes capable of handling from 20 to 200 tons per hour. Though designed for finer crushing than the ordinary secondary equipment, you w ill find the gyrasphere just as efficient on the larger sizes forming the normal output of second

ary crushers. The large feed opening, combined w ith the spherical crushing surface, gives an unobstructed

and unlimited choke feed. C u t steel drive gears, roller thrust bearings, automatic force feed lubrica

tion, piston ring dust seals and manganese steel wearing parts all contribute to low operational and

maintenance costs. A ll adjustments are outside

the machine apd easily accessible w hilst it is in

operation. The gyrasphere unquestionably does

more than other secondary crushers and does it decidedly cheaper. It w ill pay you to know all about it. Inquiry commits you to nothing, so w rite now asking any questions you like.

Single deck, Open type, Selectro Screen.

The Selectro Vibrating Screen is a positive eccentric type machine which can be readily adjusted as to stroke without dismantling or special tools. The vibrator, which includes a fully floating shaft and two compound eccentrics operating as simple ones, is completely enclosed for safety and cleanliness, and all moving parts work in a continuous oil-bath.

The tilt of the screen may be altered during operation, and the screen cloths can be easily and quickly changed. The screening angle is main

tained by live rubber stabilizers mounted on self- centering arms and live rubber shoes eliminate vibration to or from surrounding machinery. The screen is made with one, two, or three decks, and in the open or enclosed types.

Linking all the complicated activities of the modern coal mine, run the arteries of power. On their toughness and fitness for purpose depends always the efficient operation of the mine— and sometimes the very lives of the men who labour at the face. The experience and manufacturing capacity of Pirelli-General has long been devoted to the production of many specialised mining cables, including those for :

6 THE VERTICAL PUMP

The Stokes Vertical Pump—an example of the modern rubber-lined centrifugal pump— is available in a number of types and sizes up to 4 in.

It entirely dispenses w ith the use of glands, thus eliminating almost the whole cause of troubles usually en

countered when pumping abrasive pulps

and slurries. *

For thick sand suspensions at dilutions of 1:1 w ater to solids, Stokes pumps have given excellent service with w ear

ing parts lasting 8 months, working 24 hours per day.

Acid liquors can be handled w ithout any fear of the liquid coming into contact w ith metal.
