Neogene-Quaternary structural development of the Orawa Basin in the light of geological, geomorphic and remote sensing studies
The aim of this work was: a) the construction of an arrangement of faults on the basis of the drainage pattern and relief analysis with using digital elevation modeling and the aerial photographs analysis and geological research -collection of the fault-striae data; b) the determination of the principal stress ((σ1, σ2, σ3); c) the reconstruction
of the origin and development of the Orawa Basin on the basis of the deformational stages recorded in the Mesozoic sedimentary sequences of the Pieniny Klippen Belt, Paleogene sedimentary sequences of the Krynica Subunit and Central Carpathian Flysch and Neogene-Quaternary deposits within the Orawa Basin.
The main groups of faults are NNW-SSE and NNE-SSW systems which make up fan-like arrangement and minor longitudinal ENE-WSW and WSW-ESE dislocations. In the study area were distinguished three deformation stages connected with: 1) Early-Middle Miocene - the preceding stage - CCW rotation of the compression stress field, from NNW-SSE to WNW-ESE direction in the SW part of the area and CW rotation, from WNW-ESE to NNE-SSW in the N part and origin the ENE-WSW and NNW-SSE faults in the W part of the area; 2) Late Badenian-Pannonian bending of the Carpathian arc produced continuation of the stress field rotation and fault block movements along NNW-SSE faults caused the origin and development of the Orawa Basin; 3) Pliocene-Quaternary neotectonic movements part of the Orawa Basin, horizontal movements documented by drag effect in the E part of the Orawa Basin.
