Masters thesis, Report 94.3.LT.4417, Transport Engineering and Logistics.
The importance of warehousing and disthbution is gaining interest. First, global distribution causes higher warehousing and distribution costs. Second, leadtime and just-in-time delivery become more important.
The above stated developments result in changes of distribution systems and so in the erection of new warehouses or the reorganisation of excisting ones. These developments inftiated a cooperation inbetween Tebodin and Delft Universfty of Technology, in which a structured method was developed in order to design warehouses.
According to the method the warehouse is divided into six handling functions: 1. arrival;
2. transportation; 3. storage; 4. order picking; 5. value added activities; 6. dispatch.
Before starting the design, specific design parameters and demands are being defined. The specific design parameters and demands are introduced into the model, which contains design data and cost data per functional altemative. Based on the comparison, functional altematives can be studied.
The developed computer model is a good tool to support the design process. Reports on Transport Engineering and Logistics (in Dutch)
