At the time of publication, several of the papers on this compilation were no longer available in their original form. As a result, the appearance of some of the pages is not of the highest quality. However, the Society considered that the value of their content was sufficient to override the imperfect appearance.

INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this CD is to provide the user with a single source of reference materials previously published under the purview of SNAME. As small craft are an area of specialization within the larger field of naval architecture and marine engineering, we in the small craft community often find it necessary to refer to resources outside our area of specialization, requiring an extensive reference library close at hand. Therefore, this CD is intended as a “one stop shopping” means to reduce the space occupied by the myriad of reference materials needed, and to have the information readily at our fingertips.

Recognizing this need, the Small Craft Committee (SCC) of SNAME undertook a review of SNAME and SNAME-associated publications since 1985, and selected those that in their judgment and experience would be helpful in their professional endeavors. One could argue that some of the papers should not have been included, while others should have been. The selection process was simple and based on a majority choice by the seven contributing SCC members. It is the SCC’s hope that the CD lives up to the committee’s expectations, so that additional CDs on the subject can follow. We welcome any and all feedback from the users, both positive and negative. In closing, thank you for the opportunity to serve you.

Alan Gilbert

Chairman, SNAME SCC September, 2003
