The Galileo buoyancy thermometer

Historical background

No precise date can be attributed to the invention of the thermometer, although it is probable that between the years 1593 and 1603 Galileo Galilei worked on an in- strument to measure temperature, which he called a thermoscope. This innovation has led to present day developments.

Mode of operation

Although the manner of functioning seems miraculous to many people, it is based on simple physical laws (Archimedes Principle).

A body that is floating in a fluid sinks with an increase of temperature since the specific dencity of the fluid decreases. In reverse, a fall in temperature leads to an increase in specific gravity, causing the body to rise.

In Galileo’s thermometer, temperatures are marked on small discs attached to potentially floating ball tells the tempereture.

23°C 24°C 25°C Rise in temperature

With this instrument you can gauge the temperature to the nearest degree, alt- hough the thermometer is only calibrated in two-degree intervals.
