Lesson plan/procedure
1 Warm-up
Interaction forms: whole class Duration: 4 minutes
The teacher asks the students if they spend their free time mostly indoors or outdoors. What do they like doing outdoors? (e.g. cycling, playing football, walking a dog, etc.)
Students share ideas in open class.
2 Main stage
2.1. Introduction of the target language – film Interaction forms: individual, pairs, whole class Duration: 15 minutes
The teacher tells the students that in this lesson they will talk about spending time outdoors, especially camping. They will watch a short animated cartoon about a camping trip. The students should be told that there will be a number of new words, but they should be able to understand their meaning from the context.
The film is played once.
Then the teacher distributes charts to all the students. He/She explains that in the picture there are some items/objects that need to be labelled. The words the students need to use are given at the bottom of the page. One of these words will complete the title on the chart. All of these words appear in the film.
The film is played again and the students try to pick out the target words in the audio- visual material. They write down the ones they are confident about in the appropriate spaces.
Then, the students can compare their notes with a partner.
At this point the film is played one more time for the students to complete and verify labelling.
Finally, the answers are checked in open class.
2.2. Target language consolidation and practice – interactive widget Interaction forms: individual
Duration: 6 minutes
The students are offered practice through an interactive widget as an engaging way to consolidate the new vocabulary. In this activity, they have to match pictures with the corresponding words. The students can do the quiz more than once, if they enjoy it.
The words tested are: backpack, campfire, compass, map, matches, sleeping bag, tent, torch.
2.3. Target language consolidation and practice – gap-fill Interaction forms: individual/pairs, whole class
Duration: 7 minutes
The teacher distributes worksheets (Supporting material 1) to each student. This time their task is more complex. They have to fill in the gaps by putting the correct word in each sentence. Students can work alone or in pairs.
After a few minutes the answers are checked in open class.
Note: The teacher can indicate the extra word (distractor) to simplify the task, if necessary.
Answers: 1 backpacks, 2 map, 3 lake, 4 campfire, 5 torch, 6 tents (extra word:
matches)
2.4. Target language consolidation and practice – personalisation Interaction forms: small groups
Duration: 10 minutes
The students will now have a chance to talk about their outdoor activities in more length. The teacher arranges the class into small groups of 3 or 4. He/She puts some prompting questions on the board, e.g. Do you go on camping or walking trips?
Where do you go? Do you use any special equipment? Do you like sleeping in a tent?
The students have a minute or two to brainstorm for ideas on their own, then they discuss the topic in their groups. The listening students are encouraged to be attentive and ask follow-up questions to find out more about their classmates.
The teacher monitors and helps with vocabulary, if necessary. The students are encouraged to use the vocabulary introduced earlier in the lesson.
Finally, each group decides which student in their group has the most active lifestyle, and these findings are shared with the whole class.
3 Closing stage
Interaction forms: whole class Duration: 3 minutes
The teacher elicits from the students the new vocabulary from the lesson. He/She tells them to choose five of these words and, for homework, write sentences with them in their notebooks.
