Is alcoholism a problem?
1. Questions for students:
─ Does our society have to deal with alcoholism nowadays?
─ How did it look like few years/centuries ago?
─ Why do people drink alcohol?
─ Is it also a problem of young people? Why?
2. Key to exercise number 1.
Nowadays society, facing so many difficulties, has become very weak and susceptible to what is generally thought to bring relief; hard to believe as it may seem, this is what leads so many to alcoholism. Firstly, these days’
situation forces people to take part in rat race. The rivalry being so stressful, people eventually want to get it over, to forget about what makes them so tired and uptight; this is what makes them reach for alcohol. Unfortunately, there are too many who do not know when to stop. Secondly, young people, whose parents don’t pay enough attention to and spent too much time earning a living, look for friends. Some of them, sooner or later, begin to drink (some do it just for fun). Lucky them who do not fall in with a bad company. Thirdly, high unemployment rate, the fact that people stay at home with nothing to do, very often causes frustration, which often results in their alcoholism. Thinking of all these aspects, one can only ask what else the changes in these day’s world will give rise to.
