Prof. dr ROBERT HASSINK (Christian-Albrechts University of Kiel, Department of Geography) AMU Schedule May 2017

Course: Economic Globalization and Regional Development

This lecture aims at understanding the changing geography of the global economy, both from a global perspective and from a regional development perspective. It will first deal with the changing global economic map and will also provide an overview of the driving forces behind globalization, namely states, transnational corporations and innovations within logistics and information technologies. It will then focus on theoretical and analytical tools to analyze and explain the inter-relationships between globalization and regional development, namely global production networks and strategic coupling. The lecture will also focus on specific industrial case studies, such as the car industry and the advanced business service industry, in order to show the strongly differing spatial patterns of industries, the roles of transnational corporations, as well as institutional frameworks.
